Temple Cleansing
The episode of the cleansing of the Temple is
found in all four gospels. John differs from the
other three in placing the event very early in his
gospel rather than towards the end. In the
Holy Spirit Church
synoptic gospels it serves as the final provocation

leading to Jesus’ rejection. In John it is an early
warning of conflict between Jesus and the religious authorities; it also
introduces the idea of Jesus as the new Temple.
John’s account has several unique features. Only he implies a
connection with the prophet Zechariah’s reference to traders in the
Temple (14:21), and only he cites the verse from Ps 69/70 about zeal for
God’s house. Only in John does Jesus speak about his risen body
becoming a “sanctuary” to replace the Temple of Herod. The divine
presence will not longer be confined to a place of human construction,
no matter how holy. God will be present everywhere through the
Spirit of the risen Lord.
Like the readings from 1 Corinthians the gospel text relativises the
importance of buildings and places. Their real value lies in their being
signs of the universal presence of God in the world and with his
people.

Further discussions have taken place regarding the disruptions in the CBD during the week leading up to the G20 and
therefore additional changes to the regular Mass & Reconciliation schedule at the Cathedral have been made.

Ecumenical Social Justice Group meeting Monday 10 November, 7pm at the Taringa Baptist Church. Judy Haines
will speak on West Papua and its struggles against oppression. Also, ESJG wants to do Christmas hampers for 12
families (30 people, with kids in all age ranges) who are doing it tough because they are either refugees, on humanitarian visa, asylum seekers or otherwise marginalised. For more info on hamper donations call Karin 3870 7295.
The Bishop’s Commission for Pastoral Life has produced 2 recourses for parishioners:- 1. Extraordinary Synod of
the Family-Prayer Bookmark, as part of a prayer campaign to support the work of the Synod; & 2. “What is Marriage?”
brochure, a series of simple statements on marriage with special emphasis on the importance of children in marriage.

SR JEANETTE COLLIS RSM and her talented life on
Saturday 22 November, at ‘Goldicott’, from 9am—12noon.
There will be some of Sr Jeanette’s craft for sale and a
large collection of materials, buttons, lace, ribbons etc for
you to purchase (we have not priced her materials but leave
it to you to price your own purchases generously).
Proceeds will go to various Mercy charities.
Also, Sr Anna will have some of her jams and cards for sale.
Towards the end of the morning there will be an opportunity
to see Sr Jeanette’s beautiful embroideries.
A cup of tea/coffee will be available.

The Dedication of the LateranBasilica
CONGRATULATIONS to those children in our parish who received
their First Reconciliation last Wednesday evening (5/11) at Holy
Spirit Church. It was a long night but the children were fantastic!
A big thank you to the musicians for beautiful music and singing
throughout, the teachers from the school, Mary-Jane, Clare,
Monica for printing the certificates and especially to Frs Peter
Quin sj and Orm Rush. Also, thank you to parishioners for your prayers and please

ST IGNATIUS CHURCH—-READING & COMMUNION MINISTERS URGENTLY REQUIRED:
Volunteers are required to assist with the Reading & Communion Ministries for ALL
Masses at St Ignatius but particularly for the 6pm Vigil Mass on Saturdays - a large
numbers of volunteers for this celebration have left the roster for various reasons.
Training in procedures is available; frequency of commitment is dependent on the
number of volunteers available but can be negotiated with the roster coordinator.

PARISH NEWS: 1. Fr Gaetan departed Brisbane last Monday (3 Nov.) for Japan for
the ‘Hidden Christians Tour’. Please keep him in your prayers for a safe journey.

1pm due to Fr Peter and parish staff attending an Archdiocesan training session.

The Four Major Basilicas of Rome
These 4 churches are so important to Catholic faith and history that we have feast days commemorating
their dedications. They each dates back to the early church, though most of their structures have been
destroyed and rebuilt numerous times over the centuries.
*St. John Lateran: The first basilica was dedicated on this site in the early 300s. From that time until
the 1300s, it was the principal residence of the popes. It is still officially the seat of the Patriarch of Rome.
The current church dates from the 17th century. The Feast day is celebrated on November 9.
*St. Mary Major: This is the only one of the patriarchal basilicas to retain its original structure, although it has been embellished and added on to over the centuries. It is believed to be the oldest church in
the west dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The lovely legend of Our Lady of the Snows is associated
with the construction of this church. The Feast day is celebrated on August 5.
*St. Peter’s Basilica: This building replaced “Old St. Peter’s Basilica”, a Romanesque structure begun
by Constantine in 323 on the site of the crucifixion of St. Peter. The obelisk which stands in the middle
of St. Peter’s square originally stood in Nero’s circus, having been brought to Rome in 40 AD by
Caligula and was thus witness to the deaths of numerous Christian martyrs, including St. Peter. It was
moved to its current location in 1586. The present Basilica was constructed between 1506 and 1667.
*St. Paul Outside the Walls: The site of St. Paul’s martyrdom, originally outside the city of Rome. A
first, rather small, basilica was built by Constantine around 320. A larger basilica, built in 390, was
destroyed by fire in 1823. The current basilica is intended to replicate the original structure. Saint Paul’s
tomb was unearthed below this church in 2006. The Feast day is celebrated on November 18.
