CONSIDERATION OF OUR CHRISTIAN COMMITMENT: ORDINARY TIME THANKSGIVING
This month of November is a very special one, beginning
with the celebration of All Saints and concluding with
Thanksgiving. In my mind, without the celebr ation of
All Saints and all that this feast day means, Thanksgiving
would lose so much of its meaning. After all, it’s the faith
that the blessings of this earthly life are only a foretaste of
the eternal blessings offered to us by our loving Father, is
what frees us to really enjoy the blessings that are ours. The
blessings which surround us on Thanksgiving Day are not
destined to be lost but to be fulfilled. Many of those who
may have at one time or another
been with us around that table are
now around God’s eternal table.
Thus the celebration of All Saints
Day November 1 is (in my mind at
least) the best preparation for
Thanksgiving we could have. The
Book of Remembrance, placed near
the Baptismal Font and Easter Candle will be there come Thanksgiving Day when the pumpkins and other November décor will join them.
As we neared the month of November, we celebrated the
burial of James “Jimmy” Deville, a parishioner from St.
Mary Parish in Morgan City, but living with us at LaPlantation. Because this Tuesday is Veteran’s Day, I thought it
would be good to make mention of him. Jimmy was both a
veteran and a devout Catholic who came to the Eucharist
with us when we celebrated it at LaPlantation. After his
passing, when his family went to his apartment to begin
gathering his things, they found his Bible which he read
faithfully, marking in the margins and making notes. Included in the Gospel of Matthew were some notes on freedom.
Because as a soldier he served to protect our freedom, and as
a devout Catholic he prayed for and longed for that perfect
freedom, I thought his notes would be good to share with
you today. So today, I would like to defer a bit of “my
space” in this column to Jimmy. “The true freedom, and the
true light which Christ brought to Galilee nearly 2,000 years
ago, were brought on earth for us too. The Christian faith,
and the knowledge of God’s love for us and his infinite interest in our real welfare, are his gift to us and to all men of
goodwill who will accept it. Thanks be to God for this marvelous gift of faith, which frees us from the slavery of paganism and sin, and lights the road to heaven for us, amidst the
darkness and drudgery of this life…There is a shadow, the
shadow of death, over the very greatest of our earthly pleasures. Through our gift of intellect, and the experience of our
human race, we all know that life on this earth has to end,
and no matter how many more years we may think we have
left to us, death will be too soon, far too soon, when it
comes…We love life, we too want to live on, we too know
that this cannot be on this earth, but thanks to the merciful
revelation given us in our faith, we know that the infinite
love of God has prepared a future life for us. We know that
Christ, by his life and death as man among us has made us
adopted sons and daughters of God. We know we have eternal life waiting for us, and that for the Christian who did his
or her best to be a true follower and disciple of Christ, death
is not the end but the beginning of our real life…With this
divine knowledge revealed to us by and through Christ, everything falls into place in our earthly sojourn. We have our
joys and sorrows, our births and burials, but we know with
the certainty of God’s word, that these are but sign-posts
that mark our stages toward, and direct our steps toward
our eternal home.” + Thanks Jimmy for serving to protect freedom on earth and sharing your thoughts about
the freedom which awaits us.
As the Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge continues,
it is a pleasure to recognize two representatives of our K.C.

and with our youth.
As we prepared to celebrate All Saints Day, we hosted an
appreciation supper for those who serve in Bereavement
Ministries. This valued ministry prepares a meal for families when they return from the services for their loved ones
and is also available to lead the Rosary at the wake if requested. We thank them and Stephanie Gaudin, our parish
nurse and staff representative on the Outreach Commission
under which this ministry falls for organizing this appreciation supper. Let us pray for each other together with the
saints in heaven; Love,

someone who is interested in joining the Catholic Church.
To be a sponsor, you must be over 18 years old, currently
receiving the sacraments, and eager to share your love of the
Catholic Church. Sponsorship begins Saturday, November
22 when you will be assigned to a specific person. There will
be a meeting for all sponsors on Thursday, November 20 at 7

What does Ebola virus mean to us living in Louisiana?
Right now—not a lot. We should keep up to date with what
is going on in Texas but it is being contained. We cannot let
the news media cause us to panic. Remember that the discovery of Ebola here in the U.S. is different than the poor
conditions in Liberia or Guinea. There are more actual
threats to our health such as the common flu that needs our
attention.
The most important thing to remember is that you cannot get
Ebola unless you have come in contact with the blood and/or
body fluids of a person that has Ebola. If you have not traveled to West Africa within the last 21 days then you are
good. Those that have traveled to that area or have come in
close contact with someone that has should check with their
health care provider. As you can imagine that is very few
people.
However there are thousands of people that die each year
from the flu. If you listen in church, the sneezing and
coughing have already started. Last year the flu was at epidemic numbers.
Prevention is the key to keeping illness—flu or Ebola—
away.

It all starts with hand washing. Thinking smart—
washing your hands before eating, after using restroom,
keep hands away from face and for sure out of mouths—
are all ways to stay safe.
Carry hand sanitizer in your purse and car.
Stay home if you are ill, this means fever free without
medications for 24 hours.
Get a flu shot. While the shot may not keep you flu free,
it will lessen the severity of the virus.
Notify your physician at the first sign of the flu. There
are medicines to decrease the severity and shorten the
duration.

Holiday Bazaar—November 15/16
A Holiday Bazaar sponsored by the Ladies Guild of
ICC will be held in the Main Hall on Saturday, November 15, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday, November
16, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jambalaya and tamales will
be available (eat in or carry out). Make plans to attend
and buy some early Christmas gifts with the arts and
crafts available and some delicious food. Various raffles will be available also. Hope to see you there!
