POINTS OF PRIDE October 2014 Academics The College Board has recognized Sewanhaka Central High School District students as Advanced Placement Scholars for exceptional achievement on the May 2014 national exams. o 26 students received the highest designation of National AP Scholar. o 170 students received the AP Scholar with Distinction Award. o 116 students received the AP Scholar with Honor Award. o 248 students received the AP Scholar Award. Anjali Abraham, Kacie Candela and Shahzaib Saleem were selected as semifinalists in the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program. JoAnna Ast, Camille Bangug, Mia Ciulla, Samara Khan, Allison Montvidas, Joseph Nolan, Tyler Pelaez, Floril Thomas and Dorothy Yu have been named Commended Students in the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program. Harold Ekeh, Jordan Gairey, Willane Saint-Hilaire, Andreas Pavlou, Ashley Simon, Luce St. Surin and Jaclyn Williams were named Outstanding Participants in the 2015 National Achievement Scholarship Program. Tyler Pelaez was selected as a 2014 National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholar. Jack Bauman was selected to participate in the Columbia University Science Honors Program. Michael Kohen and Jenna Turato were selected as Carey’s Seniors of the Month for September. Arts Matthew Weigl was selected to perform in the National Association for Music Education All-National Honor Orchestra at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, Tenn. Therese Azzara, Jainam Doshi and Taylor Giallanza have been selected to participate in All-State ensembles at the 2014 NYSSMA Winter Conference. Camille Bangug, Jermaine Carroll, Ryan Slavin and Qubilah Sterling were selected as alternates for the 2014 NYSSMA Winter Conference. Brandon Allen, Jermaine Carroll, Tyane Eutsey, Jordan Griffith, Christina Gonzalez, Ronell Hurt, Cindy Kao and Ashley Simon were invited to sing at Elmont Public Library’s 75th anniversary celebration. The Elmont vocal jazz select choir performed at the Alva T. Stanford Fields groundbreaking ceremony. The Elmont marching band and color guard performed at the 2014 Newsday Marching Band Festival. Jainam Doshi, Ryan Slavin and Matthew Weigl have been nominated for the All-Eastern Music Festival. Megan Roth was named a Long Island Arts Alliance Scholar-Artist. Roth received an Award of Merit in media arts for photography. The Floral Park marching band competed at the 41st annual New York State Field Band Conference Competition. Community Service Carey’s Pirettes held a clinic for elementary-aged girls. The young girls then performed with the Pirettes at a recent football game. Carey’s Dad’s Club sponsored a Movie Night for Carey’s component elementary schools. Elmont’s Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) chapter participated in the Making Strides Breast Cancer walk at Jones Beach to raise money for cancer research. Elmont’s SADD Chapter spoke to students throughout the building about making healthy choices. Elmont’s Key Club participated in the 21st annual Walk-Along for Lupus. Floral Park held a Walk for Ethan, raising more than $2,000 for the Demmers family. The Florettes participated in the Making Strides Breast Cancer walk at Jones Beach on Oct. 19. The team raised $1,600 and is working with Chase Bank to have their donation doubled. Members of Floral Park’s National Junior Honor Society are tutoring at Anna House. Floral Park’s student council sponsored a free carnival for children at the school’s homecoming. Members of Floral Park’s National Honor Society have been tutoring underclassmen. Members of Floral Park’s Key Club and Builders Club volunteered at Liz’s Day and at a Halloween party at the United Methodist Church. Floral Park’s varsity cheerleaders held a cheering clinic for the Titanettes. Floral Park’s varsity field hockey team held a breast cancer awareness bake sale and a field hockey clinic for elementary school children. New Hyde Park’s Red Cross Club collected 70 units of blood at its blood drive. New Hyde Park cheerleaders wore pink and were assisted by special education students in decorating the school track in honor of Liz’s Day. Sewanhaka HS faculty and staff participated in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, helping to raise $1,000 for the ALS. Seventh-grade students from Sewanhaka HS volunteered at Centennial Gardens in Floral Park. Members of Sewanhaka’s Family Career and Community Leaders of America and Green Club decorated the school’s tribal grounds as part of the second annual Fall Festivity. Sewanhaka’s chapter of Future Business Leaders of America participated in the 21st annual Walk-Along for Lupus and raised more than $300 for the Lupus Alliance. Athletics New Hyde Park baseball players James Messina, Nick Pellegrino, Louis Plomitallo, Dylan Savarese and Anthony Verdi were recognized by members of Cellini Lodge #2206 in New Hyde Park in celebration of National Italian Heritage and Culture Month. The Floral Park Memorial Physical Education Department selected Michael Corteo and Natalie Lawrence as this year’s recipients of the Nassau Zone Award, granted by the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.
