Fr. Bryan Roe Fr Ezinwanne Igbo Fr Joseph Vattaparambil Fr John Dwyer Fr. Mick Skehan Rev. Dcn. Tim Shanahan A couple of parishioners asked me about the Syro-Malabar Rite. Then I thought that it is better to write a few lines in our newsletter. So here we go. The Syro-Malabar Church is an Apostolic Church which traces its origin to St. Thomas, the Apostle. The early Christian community in India was known as the St. Thomas Christians. The title Syro-Malabar refers to the Syriac language and Malabar region that is currently known as Kerala, on the southwest coast of India. The Syro-Malabar Catholic Church is one of the 22 Eastern (Oriental) Catholic Churches in full communion with Rome. It is the second largest Eastern Catholic Church after the Ukrainian Church. It is an autonomous Church governed by the Synod of Bishops headed by the Major Archbishop. The Syro-Malabar Rite is for us, as is the Latin Rite for you, the liturgical, Parish Website: theological, spiritual and disciplinary heritage, distinguished according to www.caloundracatholic.net.au peoples' culture and historical circumstances that finds expression in each autonomous church's way of living the faith. The existence of different Rites in PO Box 595, Caloundra the Church reveals the richness and variety of forms in which the Christian 4551 Ph: (07) 5491 2011 message can manifest itself. (24/7) The Syro-Malabar Church follows the Chaldean rite that originated in Persia. Fax: (07) 5491 2863 The Chaldean liturgical tradition in Syriac, which is a form of Aramaic that E-mail: Jesus and His disciples spoke, was brought to South India by the immigrant [email protected] Christians from Persia in the fourth century. Until 1962, this liturgy was celebrated in Syriac; since then the liturgy is now celebrated in several Indian languages. Office Hours: There will be a Syro-Malabar Mass celebrated at Our Lady of the Rosary 9am-3.00pm church in Caloundra on the 19th of November at 6pm. Some parishioners may Monday-Friday like to attend the Mass. The ritual takes twice as long as our Roman rite and the priest wears elaborate vestments. Much of the ritual is very ancient and the Manager Parish Services: whole experience is something of austerity and awe. The priest’s chant is Don & Dale Rolls mostly on a four note scale and the congregational chants are, as Father Joe Duffy describes them, “haunting and extraordinarily beautiful.” Parish Office : With its deep-rooted spirituality and high rate of vocations to priesthood and Eileen Roberts, Vicki Howard religious life, the Syro-Malabar Church is blessed with one saint at present, Bernadette Howell St. Alphonsa. However, Blessed Chavara Kuriakose Elias, the founder of the Immaculate (CMI) Order, to which I belong, will be O.L.R. School—5491 4522 Carmelites of Mary rd canonized on 23 November this year. This has been an answer to our Unity College – 5490 5777 prayers, and I am very much looking forward to joining several of my CMI brothers in Rome for the canonisation of our inspirational founder. Fr Joseph Vattaparambil CMI From the Minsters of Communion In-Service: Intinction: Taking the host and dipping it in the consecrated wine before consuming it is technically known as intinction. Self-intinction is not an acceptable practice. We do not serve ourselves communion, because the tradition has always been to receive, not to take, communion. The Eucharistic sign is not just the bread and the wine; it is eating the bread and drinking the wine together at the Lord’s Table. THOUGHTS ON TODAY’S LITURGY Prayer Thought: We recall the dedication of this most ancient Roman church in thanksgiving for the Church that is our mother, our teacher and the family of all God’s holy people. The basilica of St John Lateran is the Pope’s cathedral church as bishop of Rome; it stands on the site of the first Christian basilica in Rome, given to the Church by Constantine in the early fourth century. Even though many parents work long hours, they must set aside time to play with their children; work schedules make it “complicated, but you must do it,” he said. Families must also turn off the TV when they sit down to eat because, even though television is useful for keeping up with the news, having it on during mealtime “doesn’t let you communicate” with each other the pope said.
