A couple of parishioners asked me about the Syro-Malabar Rite. Then I
thought that it is better to write a few lines in our newsletter. So here we go.
The Syro-Malabar Church is an Apostolic Church which traces its origin to
St. Thomas, the Apostle. The early Christian community in India was known as
the St. Thomas Christians. The title Syro-Malabar refers to the Syriac language
and Malabar region that is currently known as Kerala, on the southwest coast
of India.
The Syro-Malabar Catholic Church is one of the 22 Eastern (Oriental) Catholic
Churches in full communion with Rome. It is the second largest Eastern
Catholic Church after the Ukrainian Church. It is an autonomous Church
governed by the Synod of Bishops headed by the Major Archbishop.
The Syro-Malabar Rite is for us, as is the Latin Rite for you, the liturgical,

languages.
Office Hours:
There will be a Syro-Malabar Mass celebrated at Our Lady of the Rosary

the priest wears elaborate vestments. Much of the ritual is very ancient and the

From the Minsters of Communion In-Service: Intinction: Taking the host and dipping it in
the consecrated wine before consuming it is technically known as intinction.
Self-intinction is not an acceptable practice. We do not serve ourselves communion, because
the tradition has always been to receive, not to take, communion. The Eucharistic sign is not
just the bread and the wine; it is eating the bread and drinking the wine together at the
Lord’s Table.
THOUGHTS ON
TODAY’S LITURGY
Prayer Thought:
We recall the dedication of this most
ancient Roman church in
thanksgiving for the Church that is
our mother, our teacher and the
family of all God’s holy people. The
basilica of St John Lateran is the
Pope’s cathedral church as bishop
of Rome; it stands on the site of the
first Christian basilica in Rome,
given to the Church by Constantine
in the early fourth century.

POPE FRANCIS REVEALS TOP 10 SECRETS TO HAPPINESS:
4. “A healthy sense of leisure.” The pleasures of art, literature and playing together with children have been lost, he said.
“Consumerism has brought us anxiety” and stress, causing people to lose a “healthy culture of leisure.” Their time is swallowed up”
so people can’t share it with anyone. Even though many parents work long hours, they must set aside time to play with their
children; work schedules make it “complicated, but you must do it,” he said. Families must also turn off the TV when they sit down
to eat because, even though television is useful for keeping up with the news, having it on during mealtime
“doesn’t let you communicate” with each other the pope said.
