Revelation 7:9-17
After this I, John, looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could
count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing
before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in
their hands. They cried out in a loud voice, saying,
"Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!"
And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four
living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped
God,singing,
"Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power
and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.
"Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, "Who are these, robed in white,
and where have they come from? "I said to him, "Sir, you are the one that knows.
3
"Then he said to me, "These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they
have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.
For this reason they are before the throne of God, and worship him day and
night within his temple, and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter
them. They will hunger no more, and thirst no more; the sun will not strike
them, nor any scorching heat; for the Lamb at the center of the throne will be
their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of the water of life, and God
will wipe away every tear from their eyes."
Psalm 34:1-10, Benedicam Dominum
BCP-627
(Anglican Chant sung by the Choir)
Edgar Day
1
I will bless the LORD at all times; *
his praise shall ever be in my mouth.
2
I will glory in the LORD; *
let the humble hear and rejoice.
3
Proclaim with me the greatness of the LORD; *
let us exalt his Name together.
4
I sought the LORD, and he answered me *
and delivered me out of all my terror.
5
Look upon him and be radiant, *
and let not your faces be ashamed.
6
I called in my affliction and the LORD heard me *
and saved me from all my troubles.
7
The angel of the LORD encompasses those who fear him, *
and he will deliver them.
8
Taste and see that the LORD is good; *
happy are they who trust in him!
9
Fear the LORD, you that are his saints, *
for those who fear him lack nothing.
10
The young lions lack and suffer hunger, *
but those who seek the LORD lack nothing that is good.
1 John 3:1-3
See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God;
and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not
know him. Beloved, we are God's children now; what we will be has not yet been
revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for
we will see him as he is. And all who have this hope in him purify themselves,
just as he is pure.

The Gospel (please stand) Matthew 5:1-12
When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down,
his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying:
"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
"Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
"Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be
filled.
"Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
"Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the
Kingdom of heaven.
"Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of
evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is
great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were
before you.

It has long been the custom at St. John’s Church for the congregation to be
seated and listen to the Organ Postlude. Please do not feel compelled to do
so; but if you prefer to leave immediately after the candles are
extinguished, please depart quietly so those who wish to do so may listen
prayerfully to the Postlude.
Today’s Altar flowers are given by Joanne and Larry Owen to the
Glory of God and in memory of their Mothers and Fathers.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Music in today’s Liturgy: Today we celebrate the Solemnity of All Saints, and so we
use the lessons and prayers for All Saints Day (Nov. 1). All the music used in today’s
Liturgy is selected to coordinate or amplify the themes of those lessons and prayers.
The Choir chants the Psalm 34:1-10 to an Anglican Chant setting by Edgar Day (18911983), an English composer of Anglican Church music. The Choir’s Offering Anthem
is by American composer, organist and conductor, Carl Schalk (b. 1929). Until his
retirement, he was Director of Music at Concordia College, Chicago. The Communion
Solo is the “Pie Jesu” from Requiem, Opus 9 by Maurice Duruflé (1902-1986). Duruflé
was Organist at the Church of Ettiene du Mont, Paris, and taught composition at the
Paris Conservatoire. The Organ Prelude is a setting of the chorale, “O World, I Now
Must Leave Thee”, appropriate for All Saints Day. The setting is by Johannes Brahms
(1833-1897), and is from a collection of eleven Chorale Preludes for Organ published
posthumously. Brahms is known primarily as a composer of symphonies and piano
music, but—although he was not particularly religious—he is said to have composed a
chorale prelude every morning as a musical discipline. The Postlude is from Johann
Sebastian Bach’s (1685-1750) Orgelbüchlein (Little Organ Book), a collection of 45
Chorale Preludes spanning the liturgical year. This is a setting of the Chorale “All Men
Must Die”… again appropriate for All Saints Day.
Invitation to musicians: If you know of a prospective singer or handbell ringer (friend,
relation, neighbor, complete stranger) who is not currently committed to singing or
ringing at another church, and who appreciates good classical/traditional music,
performed well in the context of finely-crafted liturgy, with an emphasis on the integrity
of music with word and Sacrament, invite them to contact Bill Clisham ASAP to discuss
participation at St. John’s 2014-2015 music ministry season. See Bill after the Postlude
for contact information.
Evensong! Mark your calendars for Sunday, November 16. At 4:00 PM. that
afternoon St. John’s Choir will lead an Evensong in the Chapel with anthems by Jean
Berger and Raymond Weidner, a Psalm setting by Joseph Barnby, new settings of
Preces & Responses by Bill Clisham, and Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis in F by Sir Arthur
Herbert Brewer. Invite your friends and neighbors. Father Steve has said St.John’s
Choir is “the best in two counties.” And he may well be correct. Bring your friends and
7
neighbors. We’ve already made the [on-line] South Jersey Times! Good things are
happening at St. John’s. This is one of those good things!
Food Pantry Changes: The Food Pantry distribution day is now only on Tuesday
from noon to 2:00 p.m. This decision was made after some careful research which noted
that there are a number of other pantry sites within Salem City which cover all the days
of the week with the exception of Tuesday. There are copies of the distribution sites on
the hall counter in the Parish House. Please note that we will continue to need volunteers
and contributions especially from the middle of the month on when we were getting as
many as 50 persons seeking food over the two-day period. There is a current monthly
sign-up sheet on the office door. Please sign up for a Tuesday you can help.
There will be a featured item every week. Next week we are asking for donations of
mashed potatoes. The Acme has a sale on Betty Crocker mashed potatoes – buy six
and they are $ .88 each.
OPERATION SHOEBOX – If you would like to help, pick up an empty shoe box and
fill it with Christmas gifts for a boy or girl. The boxes will be available during fellowship
hour and instructions are enclosed. Return boxes by November 9.
We are asking for donations of sandwiches for the Community Youth/Family Dinner
on November 13. If you are able to help, let Sally or Laurie know. They should be
dropped off by 5 p.m. on November 13.
St. Georges Pennsville is holding a 300-Year Anniversary Banquet on Saturday,
November 15 from 2:00 to 4:30 p.m. at the Riverview Inn. Cost is $35. There will be
live entertainment and guest speakers. See Board in Parish Hall for confirmation/
donation slips and further details.
