Thank you for your inconvenience Queenstown. That is the message from
dozens of event organisers and thousands of event participants who flock to the
Wakatipu every year closing roads and disrupting our daily lives. The pay back is
millions of dollars spent in our shops, cafes and hotels.
Last week I was lucky enough to join a team on the Targa Rally of New Zealand.
The motor race covered eight hundred kilometres of closed roads across fifteen
different South Island district council jurisdictions. Every one of those councils
would have thought long and hard about the inconvenience to residents before
giving the ok. However only some pulled out the welcome mat and made the most
of the economic opportunity that 2500 people spending $1 Million a day presents.
However I do get the sense we risk being caught resting on that iconic reputation.
Oamaru hosted us right smack in the middle of town and the whole town came out
to see. The atmosphere was awesome. According to veteran Targa competitors,
this is common in the North Island with drivers, crews and the public mingling
freely around cars in a loose slightly chaotic manner. Queenstown tried to be
this welcoming but when the Rees Street finishing parade hit the limit of the road
closure time, the party was over before it got started. Which was unfortunate,
because it could have been so much more.
None the less, retailers, hoteliers and the hospitality industry would have noticed
at least an extra million dollars a day dropping into the local economy. Particularly
welcome at this time of year. But major events like the Targa Rally of New Zealand
will not keep coming back just because Queenstown is iconic. Council needs to
be more flexible when things go a little off course like the finish of the Targa on
Saturday evening running late. And the public need to roll with the punches to keep
these activities that drive our economy coming back year after year. No whinging,
no moaning.
In a few weeks the inaugural Queenstown Marathon takes place. It has sold
out with 6000 participants. It is going to be massive. The inconvenience will be
significant for those going about their daily lives and finding the path blocked.
Embracing the chaos is what we need to do. Our economy depends on it.

Queenstown sits comfortably in the middle on the welcoming committee. Not as
negative and whinging as Dunedin but not as positive as Oamaru. Queenstown
understands we need these big events and know the value activities bring to our
economy, and our iconic status is a massive draw card for event promoters. Targa
for example sold the first South Island rally in its twenty year history on the finishing
stages over the Crown Range to Cardrona and Queenstown to Glenorchy. That
was motivation enough for competitors based in Auckland to commit the cost and
time it takes to get their cars and service crews this far south.

Kids!
Not so much a whinge at the public toilet
facilities in and around town but more to do
with the things surrounding those beautiful
places. So here I go,
I was in the toilets, you know the ones
in between Fat Badgers and Alpine
supermarket, when about 7 children in
between the ages of 6 and 10 suddenly
tried to break entry to the toilet I was
currently occupying. I was a little worried at
first and questioned just how strong those
locks were and surprisingly kids of this age
can be a little intimidating when strength and
numbers are combined with toilet doors...
So just as I am feeling at my most relaxed
all I could imagine in that moment was the
door slowly sliding open and been unveiled
like some prize on a quiz show. Moments
later I heard an angry man I presume was
their father come up the road shouting and
screaming and he even had to prize one
child’s hands of the toilet door as if it wasn’t
occupied by a crapping man but a guy in a
santa suit with a puppy in each hand.
As soon as the children had gone I finally
gained the courage to leave the toilet
looking startled and shell shocked, I don’t
think I will ever feel safe in a public toilet
ever again unless there is some kind of child
proof electric shocker on the outside of the
toilet which prevents children from breaking
entry to public toilets. The bottom line is,
parents please control your kids!

basing this opinion on the fact that, I work
nights, in hospo, yes the dreaded hospo.
This means, 5 nights a week, I am driving
from the center of town, up Fernhill, at
around 1am. And sure as the lake is cold, at
least 3 nights a week, I will be pulled over,
somewhere by YHA on the Lake, for a
breathaliser.
Yes, I have an old car, yes it has skis in
the back, does this therefore make me an
irresponsible citizen?? If the same cop pulls
me over on a regular basis, does this mean
all of a sudden i’m bound to have stopped
working and been out on the Tequila all night
before jumping behind the wheel? Is there
not a system they could implement (or at
least common sense/ a little bit of memory)
to not continuously stop me and ask me to
count to ten into your little machine?
