Six thousand entrants for a first up event is a pretty good effort. The
Queenstown Marathon is yet another signal to budding entrepreneurs that
there is always another good idea to be had and Queenstown is the best place
in the country to give those ideas a go. Choose to run these events at this time
of year, and expect a lot of support from grateful businesses who really notice
the lift in trade at an otherwise flat time.
Despite the atrocious weather, the success of the Queenstown Marathon also
acts as a signal to QLDC that further support of event tourism outside of peak
holiday periods should be the priority, not necessarily investing tens of millions
on a conference centre as a means to bridging the gap between peak seasons.
My personal opinion is still in favour of a CBD conference centre, but not at
any cost and significant ongoing risk to ratepayers. Like a kid who wants the
flashiest new bike, the teenager who wants their first car and the guy like me
who wants a Ferrari F12 Berlinetta, some things you wish for until financial
ability to fund such dreams force you to face reality. Such is life.
Supporting events with financial and regulatory assistance is something QLDC
can afford and are currently making a reasonable job of through their event
funding scheme. Yes a few disappointments are still had, like missing out on
being a host venue for the Cricket World Cup next year, and the loss of the
National Rugby Sevens a few years ago. But more success than failure is a
pass mark and word on the street tells me businesses across the spectrum
from accommodation, to hospitality and adventure tourism have felt the
positive effects large events like the recent Targa Rally of New Zealand and
Queenstown Marathon have had during our traditional spring shoulder season.

The key to the argument is to keep building a busy schedule of events in the
shoulder season. The enthusiasm of locals wanes when a large event causes
disruption at a peak time of year. It is hard enough to deal with peak congestion
without event related issues. And the enthusiasm of business owners
more than wanes, when events pull away from their cash registers existing
holidaymakers rather than draw new people to town. When town is full like
over New Year, what benefit to the wider business community does an event
bring that actually pulls tens of thousands of dollars out of the local economy
rather than pumping it in. Some advice for event entrepreneurs - chose your
dates carefully. Off peak we are all behind you, in peak season however do not
expect the same level of enthusiasm.

Rental Cars From The Otherside
Hi, I work for one of the many rental car companies
with a base here in Queenstown. As you can
imagine my colleagues and I are often on the
receiving end of all this publicity regarding rental cars
in the area. I would like to point out a few things that
people in Queenstown are clearly unaware of.
Firstly, when you rent a vehicle from ourselves, if you
are not from New Zealand you are given a booklet
called “What’s different about driving in New
Zealand”. This booklet outlines the Road Rules
for NZ, in many different languages. They are also
instructed on the basics of safe driving, i.e. staying
on the left, not crossing the centre line, safely pulling
in, and speeding, by a member of staff.
Secondly, many people say these people are not fit
to drive in NZ and that we should not be giving them
a car. Whatever you may think regarding this matter,
if they have a full drivers licence (and translation if
applicable) we are bound by UN convention to let
them drive on NZ roads. Yes the United Nations.
Furthermore if you do see a rental car being driven
in a dangerous way, call *555 and inform the police,
never mind going on Facebook and having a bitch
about it. Believe it or not, both the police and
ourselves want to know about these drivers so we
can actually do something about it.
All of us rental car staff do try our best, contrary to
public belief. We do try and inform foreign drivers
as best we can, unfortunately it doesn’t always sink
in. Next time you’re behind a rental car driving
particularly slowly, consider how you would be
driving in a foreign country on the other side with
completely alien surroundings, and if you do see one
driving dangerously for god’s sake call the police.

Mosquitoe Madness!
Lake Hayes Estate Residents – last year did anyone
notice the influx of massive mosquitoes that turned
up when the weather got warmer?
We have lived in LHE for over 6 years and never
had this problem, but suddenly we can’t leave our
windows/doors open in the evening because of
these hideous biting creatures that look like small
birds. I have been told this is because the ponds
around LHE used to be sprayed by the council
with whatever it is that keeps these creatures from
breeding, but now the council don’t spray the
ponds anymore.
I know this may be a bit petty, but as we come into
summer I expect to deal with mosquitoes when I go
camping, not in the comfort of my own home. If
anyone has an easy fix for this, please let me know

Council, Otago Reginal Council and Department
of Conservation but no one knew of the
Mosquitoe problem nor who was spraying the
ponds in Lake Hayes Estate.
I am not sure how accurate this information is, but if
this is the case, please can the council respond with
why they no longer spray?
A Real Good Sort!!
This is the opposite to a whinge.......a tale of a great
deed. This is for you Dave Powell.
Today I was at the New World supermarket at
Frankton and got to the check out only to find that
I had left my wallet at home. I suggested I could
make payment by internet banking on the spot with
my Iphone but apparently this is not possible. (Get
with it New World)
Whilst weighing up my options re leaving the
whole lot behind or going all the way back into
town to get my wallet , the nice young man behind
me in the queue, totally unknown to me, offered
to help! I transferred the money on the spot into
his account, which he was able to see had been
deposited, and he paid for my groceries.
What a top young man. I just want to say a huge
thank you again to Dave Powell. You are one of
Queenstowns good sorts!
