Anyone who owns a property or aspires to in the Queenstown Lakes District will know
how hard it is. Our region is the only one in the country keeping up with Auckland in the
latest Quotable Value annual property value report (www.qv.co.nz).
The Queenstown Lakes average property is now worth $693,045. Up 7.2% on the previous
year. By way of comparison, average property values in Christchurch are up 3.2% to
$469,742; Nelson up 2% to $410,363; Dunedin up 0.7% to $292,220; and Invercargill up
0.5% to $204,705. Over all, the average property value in New Zealand is up 4.9% to
$488,674.
That’s good news if you are already on the property ladder. But it is not all doom and gloom
for those with the will and looking for the way to get on the ladder and into your own home.
Over a decade ago when developers cut the first sections out at Lakes Hayes Estate, it
changed the realms of possibility for hundreds of families in the Wakatipu. It made the
dream possible and has had a significant impact on Queenstown’s growth from holiday
resort to viable long term residential town with real people living in a real community.
Lake Hayes Estate properties are now at the upper end of the affordable spectrum. With
an average house price in the Queenstown Lakes of just under $700,000, the average
house in Lakes Hayes Estate would be not far off. And with good reason. It has developed
into a very nice place to live. The transformation from the region’s most affordable new
suburb to what it is now has taken time. The dominant noise to wake up to on any given
day is no longer the banging of hammers but that of children playing. The trees have grown
and houses settled into their loving landscapes.

Now take a drive next door to Shotover Country and the same cycle of development
is happening again. Before Shotover Country came on the market what options did an
aspiring first home buyer have? An unfortunately far too common option was to simply
pack up and leave the district, such was the sense of hopelessness some people felt.
Robbing us of good people who would have contributed to build a good community.
It is a reality of modern life that not everyone will own their own home. And in a desirable
location like the Wakatipu, even with new subdivisions like Lake Hayes Estate, Arthurs
Point, Jacks Point and now Shotover Country the affordability will always be at the
absolute limits or beyond of most people. Like similar parts of the world there is the risk the
majority of our working population will have to take their opportunities for home ownership
in far flung parts of the wider region. Into Southland and Central Otago, commuting to work
in the Wakatipu but not contributing to the growth and vitality of the Queenstown Lakes
community.
So as another couple of hundred local families take their opportunity in Shotover Country,
the next subdivision, or higher density rezoning of existing housing stock needs be in
the planning. If the Queenstown Lakes does not continue to make available ownership
opportunities close to New Zealand’s average property value of $488,674, then remember
the year 2015 because this is the year our community growth rate reached its peak. And by
2025, the average Queenstown family will be living in Alexandra.

Concert Rip Off
The biggest rip-off for a concert last year has got to be Rhythm
& Alps. How can they justify charging $80 to change the
name on a ticket, should you no longer want to go? Who
even cares who uses a ticket to access a concert? I emailed
a complaint to them and they tried to justify by saying airlines
charge a high fee for a name change. Sooo? Airlines send a
number of passengers up into the air in an aircraft and need
to be sure they know who is on board. No other concerts
have the need to know who is attending. In fact, you don’t
even get your name on your ticket. THEY DON’T NEED
TO KNOW.
I hope the fact that ticket sales were poor last year is a lesson
to them that people don’t want to purchase so far in advance
and then run the risk of such a rip-off if their plans change.
Most concert goers for this event would have been 18/19
year olds and over $200 for a ticket is enough to pay without
being eye-gouged with a $80 fee in the event their plans have
changed. They should be paying us for use of money for the
6 months, they had the income. We certainly won’t be buying
into their scam in the future.
The second place-getter for a concert fail has to be Otago
Daily Times. We wanted to purchase tickets for Neil Diamond
and saw that the Otago Daily Times were doing a pre-sale for
subscribers. As we had been considering subscribing, this was
an added incentive and the ad clearly stated that new subscribers
would be able to get in on the pre-sale as well. Except that
it turned out they sent their list of subscribers to the ticketing
agency the week before their ad went into the newspaper.
After subscribing, I checked that everything was in order for
us to be able to access the pre-sale and was assured it was.
On the day, guess what? It didn’t work. We rang ODT to
be told about the list having already been sent the previous
week and they would sort it and phone us back. Still waiting!!!
Eventually I was able to access the tickets by using a friend’s
subscription, but a total fail on the part of ODT. Why did
they even advertise that new subscribers would be eligible
when they had already sent the list away? Perhaps they should
stick to printing newspapers!

The ODT apologises for any inconvenience. A master
list was sent to the ticketing company a week before the
promotion. This would have captured most of the subscribers
at that point. All new subscribers from that date should have
been sent on a daily basis to the ticketing
company. This did not happen and again we apologise.
Once notified of the issue we corrected it and sent new files.
Overall our subscribers were extremely pleased with the offer
and they definitely made the most of the opportunity to buy
the best seats to the concert.

was thinking it was a public road...keep up with the
times “concerned motorist”...cyclists can ride anywhere
now... even on public footpaths and through the busy
mall... its us that has to keep out of their way..not like it
used to be....

Letter To The Editor
EVERYONE uses roads. Even the CHICKEN crossed the
road! Trucks, pedestrians, rental cars, farmers, bikers, motorists
and animals. Its about sharing the road with tolerance .
I wasn’t in the bunch of cycles on the Glenorchy road, that
last week’s letter writer complained about. However I have
some points to make, and I’ve also spoken with some of the
riders that the motorist complained about.
Yes the cyclists could’ve been more courteous, they are now
apologetic, and we will endeavour to continue to sharpen
cyclist’s manners. We will be contacting the organisers of the
race to make changes for next year so such an issue wont reoccur. However we need to address the wider issues for all
cycle-motorist interactions.
Cyclists are usually aware and pull to the left in single file
when needed, to make room for vehicles to pass. I agree
that particular bunch were rude in this respect. And yes,
they should’ve ridden 2 abreast and single file when cars
are attempting to pass on narrow sections. After talking with
the riders, they suggest that your alleged 4,5,6 abreast is an
exaggeration, and I tend to agree, as it is physically impossible
to fit that many riders abreast on that narrow lane.
(One solution: A friendly and short “toot toot” as a driver
comes up behind is a reminder for cyclists to ride to the left
as you pass, but a long, rage-induced blast on the horn when
adjacent to the riders’ naked ears is terrifying and downright
dangerous, and of course too late to be of any use.)
It must’ve been very alarming to be “forced into the other lane
in order to avoid ramming up the back of the bunch”. But I
must remind you that any road user is required to adjust their
speed to match the conditions and to be able to stop in the
distance visible to them. What if there had been a flock of
sheep, a slow campervan or tractor? The Glenorchy road is
not a motorway, it is a narrow, windy mountain road used by
cyclists, farmers, tourists. Only a few years ago it was a gravel
road! Cyclists ride the Glenorchy road as it is the least busy
road in the entire area, and less danger to, and from motorists.
Passing a cyclist is no different to passing any vehicle, one
must wait until the road is clear to do so, indicate etc.
Motorists are required to give at least a 1.5 metre berth. It is
lethally dangerous to squeeze a cyclist into the gutter, ditch,
a cliff or bank.
Cyclists are a valid form of transport and user of the roads.
The vast majority of cyclists also own a vehicle, sitting in the
garage, that has road user tax paid. Cycles were plying roads
well before any cars were invented, and will likely still ply the
roads long after cars are redundant. May I suggest that you get
used to them, as with rising fuel scarcity, you yourself may find
yourself riding a bicycle!
My probably laughed at suggestion is this. This town can
make so much money from these clowns. Install even
one camera on say Stanley and Gorge roundabout with
license plate reading technology and charge thus: failure
to signal on approach $5. Failure to signal on exit $5.
Turning right and failing to signal and almost crashing into
me you #*^*er $15. This could be a goldmine.
