It was four years ago last Sunday that Christchurch was hit by the most
devastating of literally thousands of earthquakes to rattle the area over
a seismically turbulent period in New Zealand’s history. Catastrophic for
Christchurch, and being the largest city in the South Island, the effects have also
been felt keenly here in Queenstown.
Last month I went for a drive around Christchurch, as I’ve done at least once a
year since the Earthquakes, to get a first-hand update on progress with the rebuild.
You can only really appreciate the scale of the task by seeing it yourself. Driving
through abandoned red zoned suburbs is like moving through an Apocalypse
movie set. And four years on the reality is that so much has yet to begin, let alone
finish in the Garden City. It is still emotional and raw on so many levels to see the
destruction of people’s lives so close to home.
While painfully slow progress will continue at ground zero for many more years,
the effect that event has had on the Queenstown Lakes District is plain to see four
years on. In my opinion Queenstown has benefited positively from Christchurch’s
misfortune, as cruel as that sounds. Once the world got their facts right and came
to realise the entire South Island had not been flattened, Queenstown Airport
went into hyper drive as travellers sought to avoid Christchurch and come directly
to Queenstown. We have also managed to pick up a number of highly skilled
Christchurch born and bred migrants as families relocated to the Wakatipu. We
now boast a choice of legal, accountancy and other professional services to rival
any city in New Zealand. Queenstown became a viable long term option the day
the earthquake struck Christchurch, and today could not be in a better position to
grow beyond tourism with all the attributes of an international metropolitan centre.

But the most important thing we gained from the Christchurch earthquakes was a
warning to prepare ourselves for a similar unforeseen event. All over New Zealand
regional and district councils updated disaster response procedures. The ‘Four R’s’
– Risk, Readiness, Response and Recovery.
Queenstown should have learnt that valuable lesson when Lake Wakatipu poured
into the CBD in the 1999 flood. How quickly the flow of economic momentum
can change and if you are not prepared, recovery can take years. We can get
so focussed on development when we also need make sure what we have is
resilient. Local councils like QLDC might be responsible for the lion’s share of risk
assessment and response but on the anniversary of a devastating event like the
Christchurch earthquakes it is a good time for us all to ensure we have identified
and assessed our own personal risk factors, reducing that risk where possible.
Ready ourselves, and know how to respond in an emergency situation and have
the tools identified to recover and make it through.
