Page 4 November 2, 2014 All Saints, November 1 Lect. 667: Revelation 7:2–4, 9–14 / Psalm 24:1–2, 3–4, 5–6 (R/. cf. 6) / 1 John 3:1–3 / Matthew 5:1–12a Reflecting on God’s Word Some people want the Beatitudes to be Jesus’ new commandments; others, an eight-step program for dealing with our addiction to this world; and still others, just one more grocery list of what we should be stocking up on for a long winter’s journey to the Kingdom. The Beatitudes are also, however, the face of Jesus in its boldest and most daring profile. Every time we catch a glimpse of them in ourselves, it’s like looking in the mirror and seeing what we someday will be. The fact is, as St. John attests, it’s already begun. I keep bumping into them, and so do you. I think of someone I know who can’t stand division in his home. He is absolutely driven to find healing solutions. He’s a peacemaker from the word go. We all know those who are passionate about the weakest among us. They refuse to keep their mouths shut, even at the cost of losing other folks’ acceptance. They can’t seem to help it. Some seem able to forgive without a second thought. Others honestly and deeply hunger to be holy, not pious or religious but just good. And others seem to enter into people’s pain with great compassion and sensitivity in ways that I don’t. They actually mourn for the world. And then there are those of us who don’t feel we live many of those Beatitudes very well. Yet every once in a while something pops up from God knows where, and it’s a bit of divinity in us that we’d never believed could be there. Then we realize that it must be God’s doing because it could never be our own. And if it is God’s doing, then we must be God’s daughters and sons. What else could it mean? It’s like looking in a mirror, and we didn’t even know what we were. —Rev. Joseph J. Juknialis Copyright © 2012, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. The unleavened wafers are baked from pure wheat flour and water, are usually rectangular in shape and very thin; they are identical in composition to a round wafer which become the Host after the Consecration during Mass in the Roman Catholic Church. Being only a reminder of the Body of Christ used in private homes, Opłatki lack sanctification by a priest or bishop. The Opłatki wafers are embossed with Christmas related religious images, varying from the nativity scene, especially Virgin Mary with baby Jesus to the Star of Bethlehem. COST IS $3.00, AVAILABLE AT GIFT SHOP & PARISH OFFICE Page 6 November 2, 2014 Interested in becoming Catholic? If so, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is for you!!! If you or someone you know is questioning becoming Catholic please have them either call or e-mail me, Lea @ 482-6883 or [email protected] As people journey through life, sometimes they realize that they are wanting something more from life. Many times you are searching for a faith community. If you are searching and want to inquire more about Catholicism, please do not hesitate to call— I would love to talk with you! Celebrate!!! All Saints’ Day: November 1 What Do You Want to Be When You Grow Up? by Jeannine Marino, JCL How often have you asked your children this question? Have you ever encouraged them to be saints? Did you know that we are all called to be saints? Imagine the transformative effect on the world if we encouraged our children to be saints! Are you thinking to yourself, "Great idea, but how exactly do I teach my children to be saints?" Before we can teach our children how to be saints, we have to first understand what a saint is and who can be a saint….A simpler description of a saint is a member of the Church whose life was imbued with a love of God and neighbor; who is united with God in heaven; who is an intercessory to God on our behalf; and who is worthy of public and universal veneration. Put even more simply, a saint is a witness to the love that God has for each of us and whose witness should be emulated by the faithful. A saint has lived the virtues of faith, hope, and charity in such a profound way that others are brought to Christ through their witness. CELEBRATE ALL SAINTS! Saints are fully human...they struggled with temptation (like St. Peter), they savored life’s joys and changed their lives for God (like St. Francis of Assisi); they loved children (like St. Nicholas, St. John Bosco, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton ); they loved their families (like St. Monica, Blessed Frederic Ozanam); they surprised others (like St. Catherine of Siena, St. Joan of Arc); they create (like Blessed Fra Angelico, St. Hildegard of Bengan); they are people who teach us new ways to pray (like St. Teresa of Avila, St. Benedict, St. Dominic de Guzman). Pause for a moment and think of some great saints. Think of your patron saint, your favorite saint. Is it someone who lived long ago? Were they marked by something extraordinary? Can we ask them to help us in our life today? Discover the saints, they model life for us. WE FORGET SAINTS WERE HUMAN LIKE US! Remember King David, one of the most important figures in the Old Testament. When he was still a boy, God chose him and he was anointed by Samuel. (1Sam.16:6-13). David attracted attention by slaying Goliath (1Sam.17). He became a close friend of Saul’s son, Jonathan, and married Saul’s daughter, Michal (1Sam.18) He showed real piety in sparing the life of Saul when Saul was seeking to kill him. (1 Sam. 24, 26). Once David was King, he coveted another man’s wife and committed adultery with Bathsheba and arranged the murder of her husband, Uriah. (2 Sam. 11) He was confronted by the prophet Nathan and repented. (2Sam.12 & Psalm 51). David is remembered more for his goodness than his sinfulness. WHAT IS A SAINT? In the New Testament, the term saint often is synonym for Christian. Christians are called to belong to Jesus Christ, to be a part of God’s holy people, to be saints (Rom.1:6-7). Let’s capture a sense of this and think of how we can be people who think beyond the everyday (like St. Padre Pio, St. Juan Deigo, St. Bernadette); people who are willing to travel to help others (St. Peter Claver, St. Frances Xavier Cabrini); people who were brave (like St. Maximillan Kolbe, St. Isaac Jogues); people who help the poor and the sick (like St. Elizabeth of Hungary, St. Vincent DePaul); people who help in ordinary ways (like St. Anthony of Padua, St. Christopher). Saints are people who put God first in their life. This means they put love first because God is love. Saints never stop loving and caring. Think of the people who you are called to love and those that love you. Take sometime to celebrate the saints in your life and pray to the saints in heaven. Saints show us that following God is possible. They wrote letters and prayers to share their experience of God. CAN YOU WRITE, CALL, TEXT A FRIEND or FAMILY MEMBER? LET THEM KNOW GOD’S LOVE IS NEAR!
