Past CSC EVENTS Oysters and the Damariscotta River October 24 Bill Mook, President and Owner of Mook Sea Farm, gave a compelling presentation to an appreciative group of about two dozen on Friday afternoon, October 24th , at Damariscotta’s Midcoast Friends’ CSC e-news #88 November, 2014 Meeting House. Bill described his modern process of raising a major fraction of the seed oysters used from Virginia to Maine each year, as well as of more rapidly bringing to full size a significant percentage of the oysters consumed in the United States. He also described in detail the effects already perceived and others soon to be expected from the increasing acidification of oceanic and Gulf of Maine waters. These effects could seriously harm Maine’s fish and shellfish industries. The presentation was well-illustrated, not to mention extremely relevant to those of us who are fortunate to live near or on the Damariscotta River. Non-CSC EVENTS Tutoring Opportunity: Knox County Hospitality House in Rockport serves the homeless in Knox County. Often, there are school-aged students in residence who would benefit from tutoring to support their regular educational programs. We are looking for volunteers to tutor the students. You would work in conjunction with the student's regular class teacher to coordinate activities.. The education coordinator at the Hospitality House will provide oversight and support. The suggested time for tutoring is after school on weekdays. Frequency depends on the tutor's schedule but at least two days are recommended. We will consider special arrangements to accommodate the tutor. Anyone interested should contact Robert Williams at Hospitality House at 207-593-8151 and request a volunteer form. All volunteers must complete an information form and to have a background check.
