Senior College Week at Skidompha Used Book Shop
October 20-25
The week of October 20 through 25 has been designated Senior College
Week at the Skidompha Second Hand Book Shop in Damariscotta. All
members of any Senior College – students, teachers, staff, and
volunteers – will be entitled to 50 percent
off all purchases.
According to Rosie Bensen, co-manager of
the shop, “Senior College and the book
shop are a natural combination. Senior
College courses represent a wide range of
interests and areas of expertise, and so
does our collection. We have books that
relate to nearly every subject on the
Senior College course list. Some of those books will be in a special display
during
the
week.”
To
receive
the
discount,
a customer needs only to mention his or her Senior College connection to
the
volunteer
shopkeeper
when
checking
out.
This is the shop’s second Senior College Week. The first one was held in
October 2013, and many Senior College members took advantage of the
special sale.
“Sometimes,” Bensen said, “after a course is ended, students donate their
assigned texts to the shop, which creates another connection between the
shop and Senior College. Such donations are gratefully received and
every one benefits the library.”

Besides books for adults and children, the shop’s offerings include music
CDs, audio books, movies on tape and DVD, and puzzles.
The book shop is a major fund-raiser for Skidompha Public Library. All
items are donated, all staff members are volunteers, and all proceeds go
to the library.
The shop is located at 115 Elm Street, in the “Red Barn,” just up the hill
from the library’s back door. Shop hours are Monday through Friday, 10
to 4, Saturday 10 to 1.
For more information about the shop, contact the shop at 563-7807 or
visit its page on the library’s website, skidompha.org.

Past Event: Bowdoin College Museum of Art
September 4
A small group of CSC members
joined Bowdoin Museum Art Director
Anne Collins Goodyear and Dorothy
Vogel, (seated) for a special docent
tour and film displaying some of the
generous gift of 320 works donated
to the museum from the collection of
Dorothy
and
Herbert
Vogel,
collectors post-1960’s minimal, postminimal and conceptual art. After the tour, the documentary “Herb and
Dorothy 50x50” by Magumi Sasaki was shown - this film describes the
Vogel’s project to donated works of art to art institutions in all 50 states;
Ms. Sasaki also made a film “Herb and Dorothy” about this couple, also
known as the “proletarian art collectors” the bulk of whose collection was
given to the National Gallery in Washington, DC.
Past Event:
How Maine Voters Can Help Fix the Government
Skidompha Library, September 26
An appreciative audience (about 40 strong)
heard moderator Barbara Kaufman (Board
member of the Maine League of Women
Voters) and three panel members,
CSC’s
Christopher
Frost
(who
provided
suggestions for staying engaged as a
responsible citizen in our democracy);
Joanne D’Arcangelo of JD’A Consulting, Inc.
(who offered tips for working with your
legislator and effective lobbying); and Naomi Schalit, publisher and
senior reporter for the Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting (who
provided questions to ask and resources to consult when trying to
determine the credibility of news and political sources). An informed
voter is an empowered voter! CSC’s Carmen Lavertu put together this
outstanding program.

OUR THEATERS
The Lincoln Theater (Damariscotta), the Strand Theater (Rockland) and
the Harbor Theatre (Boothbay) feature many current and unique films,
HD opera and NT Live plays, ballet, live performances and all feature
tasty popcorn! Lincoln Theater also has wine, beverages and “retro”
candy!
Check out the websites and be sure to join the mailing lists (Lincoln and
Strand) to get info on the latest offerings each week.
Both the Lincoln and Strand theaters also depend on contributions to
keep the programming as vibrant and varied as it is.
Please support
your theaters by attending and by contributing.
OTHER EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES
Penobscot School, a nonprofit center for language learning and
international exchange in Rockland, has existed for over twenty-five

Compiler of E-news: Pat Manning; questions and comments welcome.
Below falls into the “shameless commerce division” but I liked the design.
Yarmouth Artist Page O’Rourke created the design
for this year’s Damariscotta Pumpkin Fest and
Regatta, October 10-14, 2014.
You can either
enjoy the foliage and country away from here or the
crowds and pumpkins in Damariscotta.
