PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Travellers on a voyage constantly seek reinforcement by frequently consulting their map or compass, not wanting to stray off course.
Similarly, for those on a spiritual journey of growth, some words of wisdom, such as the lessons of the following account contained in this
week’s Parsha, merit repeating as they provide reliable guidance and direction:
We have been told the story many times about our Matriarch Sarah who when unable to have children, arranged for her maidservant Hagar to
start a family through herself and her husband Avraham. The result of the union between Hagar and Avraham was the son Yishmael.
Thirteen years later at the age of 90, Sarah miraculously conceived a son of her own with our Patriarch Avraham. Thus the lineage of the
Jewish nation was continued through their son Yitzchak. Once this age-defying event occurred, our Matriarch required Hagar and Ishmael to
be banished from the household. The Torah states explicitly that Sarah said to Avraham “‫ ”גרש האמה הזאת ואת בנה‬- “Chase away this
maidservant together with her son” (21:10).
On the surface, we seemingly have cause to be shocked and in effect almost compassionate toward Hagar as she is cast away by the Mother
of the Jewish Nation. Even today many other nations speak disparagingly against Sarah as this event appears as a blemish in her near
perfect reputation as the caregiver for all humanity. After all, the Talmud explains that her name was changed to Sarah from Sarai to denote
her becoming the “‫ ''נעשית שרה לכל העולם כולו‬- ”Princess to the entire world”. (Brachos 13a).
What did Hagar do in the eyes of Sarah that resulted in such a severe dismissal? Drastic times call for drastic measures. The Shar Bas
Rabim tells us that Sarah truly played the role of the maternal caregiver of the world. Having born witness to the negative conduct of
Yishmael and lack of positive parental skills on the part of his mother Hagar, Sarah felt it was necessary to “wake up” his mother. Sarah had
seen through her great prophetic eyes that when the time came for Yishmael to marry, Hagar would continue to make the wrong decisions in
the raising of Yishmael. The Torah tells us ”‫ ”ותקח לו אמו אשה מארץ מצרים‬-“And his mother took a wife for him from the land of Egypt” (21:21).
Sarah’s motives were to give Hagar the opportunity to focus more intently on a corrective path for raising a child. By telling Avraham to chase
away Yishmael’s mother, Sarah was expecting that this event would spark within Hagar the maternal instinct and help her really and truly see
her son’s true positive potential for the first time.

The lesson to us as parents in this generation is quite clear. There are times when we need to really look at our own children and truly see
them for who they are. We may not always like what we see, but that is OK. In fact, it is better to see it now as it is within our ability to assist
our child to alter the picture by changing their ways, one might say. Sometimes, because we truly love that child, we may even need to take
measures that others will not understand at the time. Each child truly has innate gifts and talents and is truly a "chelek elokah mimaal
mamosh". Each child carries within a spark of true G-dly essence. However, it is our job as parents to do the right thing and it is not the
easiest thing to reveal that holy essence in our children. May we take this positive lesson from our holy mother Sarah. Let us truly hope that
each of us has the courage, conviction and vision to see and reveal the beauty in Hashem’s gifts.
Wishing you all a good Shabbos,
Rabbi Dr Noteh Glogauer - Principal

CLASS OF THE WEEK - MEGILLAH CLASS
Did you know that it takes 4 days to get to the moon?
During our play experiences we have been very eager to discover what there is to
learn about SPACE! Each day we love to gather together as a group, sit in our
imaginary rocket ship and fly to the moon. Before we go on our mission to the moon
we always remember to put on our bodysuit and our special helmet to help us
breathe. It is so wonderful to see the children seek out and accept new challenges,
make their own choices and celebrate their achievements.
Over time we have loved to learn about all of the planets
through books, technology, art and craft and dramatic play!
As the time has progressed we have learnt many interesting
facts about our solar system. Some of these include:
1. It takes 4 days to get to the moon
2. The sun is a burning ball of fire
3. There are no trees, plants, animals or
humans that live on the moon
4. Earth is where we live
5. A rocket ship can take us to the moon
6. An asteroid is a large rock in outer
space

Year 3 Fete
On Wednesday the 1st of October the year 3 students
at Kesser Torah College demonstrated the knowledge
and skills they had learnt this term in Mathematics,
English and their HSIE topic ‘Mind Your Own Business’
by holding an end of term Fete. The terms topic focused
on goods, services, wants and needs of the community
as well as the general running of a business.
The students exhibited tremendous knowledge through
the running of their own stalls providing the KTC
Primary School with both goods such as juices, apple
slinkys or loom bands and services or games. The
students also created their own persuasive
advertisements. (continued on next page...)

Year 3 Fete
/ cont’d
The students took full responsibility for the stall as well as creating exciting, sustainable advertisements in the way of iMovie
commercials, which they starred in, edited and produced themselves. All money that was raised on the day will be donated
to the Israeli Defence Force as voted by the student body after watching persuasive PowerPoints created by the Year 3’s.
Everyone had a fabulous day filled with enterprise, profit
making, games, charity and so much fun. The Fete was a
resounding success, with incredible learning opportunities
and lots of fun had by all.
Mrs Segal and Mrs Owen would like to pay a special thank
you to all the parents who supported this fantastic day and
helped make it the success it was. We would also like to
thank Nudie Juices for their donation of drinks to sell at the
fete.

Maths Olympiad
Each year, a selected group of Year 5 and 6 students participate in the Maths Olympiad Competition, the aim of which is to
encourage and develop the skill of mathematical problem solving. Once again, the students engaged in high-level

We are extremely proud of Rafi Blackman who won the Maths Olympiad trophy for achieving first place at Kesser Torah
College and for coming in the top twenty five percent of the state. Second place was tied between Eytan Taub and
Yehuda Eisenberg who also came in the top twenty-five percent. Miriam Miller topped the girls.

Touch Football Gala Day
Boys High School
The Boys Touch Football Gala Day was a great success with all teams showing
great sportsmanship and the competitive drive to their best. Kesser Torah College
took a strong team captained by Kovi Smith and were looking to improve their
position from previous Gala Day Sports Carnivals. After narrow losses to Masada
and Emanuel, KTC played in the 3rd place final against Masada College.
The game was a see-sawing battle that saw the lead change several times. With
two minutes to go, Masada were in front by one try. It seemed like it would require
a heroic effort to win this game as the KTC boys had already played 4 games
previous to this match. Mendy Althaus, Kovi and Davi Smith step up to lead the
way in some scintillating attacking play that was rewarded with a try. Michael
Butnaro and the Perlow brothers stopped a certain try with excellent covering
defence. With seconds remaining the captain Kovi Smith stepped through the
Masada team placing the ball down for the winning try to seal Kesser Torah
College’s 3rd place in the Gala Day. Huge congratulations to the boys in the KTC
Touch Team for their incredible efforts!
Team List: Mendy Althaus, Michael Butnaro, Levi Hoffman, Yossi Kirovsky, Dovid
Perlow, Mendel Perlow, Misha Schwartz, Davi Smith and Kovi Smith (c).

Touch Football Gala Day
Girls High School
On Wednesday, 29 October 2014, ten High School girls in Years 7 and 8
proudly represented KTC at the Jewish Day Schools Touch Football Gala
Day.
The girls had a great time and gave it their all on attack and defence, scoring
multiple tries while showing their usual great sportsmanship.
Every match was tightly contested and the girls put in 100% effort against
strong sides from Moriah College, Masada College and Emanuel School.
After playing four games with barely any breaks the last and fifth match
against Moriah College certainly wasn’t easy, but the girls worked extremely
well together defending and preventing Moriah College from gaining ground.
After a brilliant try by Tiffy Malka in the last few minutes of the match, again
showing her excellent running and dodging skills, the match ended in a tie
(1-1), which was enough to put our girls in 3rd place.
Player of the Match was Tiffy Malka who displayed excellent skills in both
attack and defence, preventing the opposition from scoring on multiple
occasions.

Dear KTC,
We’ve been loving the warm weather and kicking off this week was
Yad Le’ezra fund-raising division’s Frozen Fruit Frenzy - everyone
been loving the fruit, smokes and smoothies and we thank you all for
contributing to the worthy cause!
On Monday we commemorated Yud Aleph Cheshvan - the
passing of Rachel Imeinu who is a true mother constantly
beseeching Hashem to make our time in galus easier. We played a
mother-daughter game in davening where we interviewed and
recorded mothers answering questions about their daughters, and
then we asked the girls and their answers. Everyone had fun
listening to what our mother’s had to say :) Thank you to our
participating mothers and daughters.
Shteig was also themed to Rochel Imeinu and delicious ice-cream to
go along with it.
Torah and Tea has also kicked off and is happening weekly on
Thursday at recess.
