Declining Mobile Coverage
My notes in the October Blarney
regarding erratic and declining strength
of mobile and data coverage have
attracted many remarks of agreement,
and also questions of who to contact
about it. Our local member for the
Central Wheatbelt, Hon Mia Davies MLA
is interested in this information and you
could also register your concerns with
the Minister for Communications
Hon Malcolm Turnbull MP, the
Telecommunications
Industry
Ombudsman Simon Cohen, the Minister
for Commerce Hon Michael Mischin
MLC and the Minister for Regional
Development Hon Terry Redman MLA.

Town Water Harvesting
As previously reported an investigation
has been underway regarding street
water harvesting in the Beverley town
site, capturing this valuable resource to
provide an additional water supply for
maintenance of council parks, gardens,
the town oval and for emergency
supplies.
A plan is being drafted which includes
construction of two retention basin dams,
one at the river end of Edwards St and
one adjacent to the old BMX track in John
St, to capture water following a “rain
event” which would then be pumped to
the existing Town Dam on Hunt Rd.
Many rural Local Governments have
initiated similar schemes and the
Department of Water “Community
Water Supply Program” currently
provides an opportunity for the Shire to
seek funding assistance to undertake
such a project.
De-Lisle St Light Industrial Project
Council continues to liaise with
Landcorp and the Department of Lands
seeking progress for this important
development. If you know of anyone
who might be interested in taking up a
light industrial block in Beverley please
contact the Shire. The blocks will have
underground power connections, a
reticulated water supply connection and
a drainage outlet. The blocks will require
a waste disposal system to be installed as
won’t be connected to the reticulated
sewer mains.

opening the Visitors Centre and
providing a warm welcome to visitors to
our town. You do not need to be a
museum guide (the display is a

Youth Development
Beverley Heroic Bike Ride and
Beverley Town Ride
Avondale Bush Dance
The Beverley Heroic proved to be a great
day and whilst not a race, celebrated
“The Beverley”, a bicycle race which ran
between 1897 – 1999. The Heroic was
about participation and enjoying the
Avon Valley during a round trip cycle to
either York or Northam. Despite the
weather 74 cyclists departed Beverley at
8am on Sunday 5th October, including
local participants Rob Fisher, Tim Cooke
and Deane Anysley (who all did the
Northam 100 mile loop!) with the final
entrant arriving back in Beverley at
around 4.30pm. The enthusiasm and
passion of “Heroic” organizer Toby
Hodgson of “Mr. Vesparazzi” provided
the opportunity for Beverley to host the
start and finish for this event.
Sponsorship by the RAC and enthusiasm
from our Community Development
Officer Kathryn McLean saw the
inclusion of a Beverley Town Ride in the
afternoon which was also highly
successful. Around 70 local and visiting
riders ranging in age from 5 years and
upwards took to the streets to complete
a fun and educational ride exploring the
town to find clues to a “secret answer”.

Christmas
Light
Competition is on again. This is open to
all residents and businesses within the
town boundary, entry is free and
winning entries are announced at the
Community
Christmas
Party
in

Through various partnerships Council
has been supporting an array of Youth
initiatives. This has included the recent
Beverley Town Ride, the forthcoming
“Creating Crazing Critters” program at
the Station Gallery, “The Truth About
Forever” drug and alcohol education
forum and “A Night with the Stars”
Wheatbelt ball. See details elsewhere in
the Blarney.
What a fun night the recent Avondale
Bush Dance was. The Mucky Duck Bush
Band provided great entertainment,
with fitness levels tested for many of us!
Some of the patrons visiting were from
York, Brookton, Fremantle, Wellard,
Sawyers Valley and even Brazil!
Congratulations and thank you to our
Avondale
Farm
National
Trust
volunteers for the huge effort put in to
stage the event. Definitely one for the
diary if held again.
Wild Women of the West
The variety of speakers, entertainment
and range of stall holders provided
something for everyone, certainly
something to be talking about! Creative
table decorations, Sara Maclivers’
delightful voice, mind and body
coaching, lone male dancing on the
tables, crowd surfing and Patti Chong’s
frank reiteration of courtroom abuse
could well have tickets for next year sold
before they are even printed! Well done
to the CRC’s organizing committee of
Sam Fricker, Amor Moulton, Marlene
Wilson and Anto Cooke.

Avondale Farm
Beverley Bush Dance
The weather wasn’t the best for our Bush Dance which was held at Avondale Farm on October 18th. We had high
winds, pounding rain and lots of areas had lightening storms and even hail. Despite the weather we all had a great
time. As well as dancers from local areas, we had visitors from all over Perth who danced merrily all night and
stayed over in Beverley to enjoy our lovely, if rather wet town.
Everyone enjoyed the Mucky Duck Bush Band who called out the dances so even the most inexperienced dancers
and the children could join in the fun. There were a few who looked quite winded after a few dances though. Our
energy was fuelled by some tasty food provided by our expert cooks for the night. It was great to see Dina and Rob
out at Avondale on the night and they ran the bar with their usual charm and efficiency.
We had a Chuck the Duck competition which involved throwing plastic ducks into a pond to see who had the best
aim. The winner was Jan Cowley from Kingsley. Well done Jan, you can certainly chuck a duck and showed the
guys how it is done.
We all sang happy birthday to a young chap called George Smith who told me he was 21, not sure if he was joking.
I must admit he could have fooled me! I didn’t even get a chance to have a dance with him and I’m told he’s an
expert.
A big thank you goes to all of the Avondale Farm Project Assoc (AFPA) Committee and volunteers who worked their
little cotton socks off to make it a great night. Some of them brought along their families to help as well, so thanks to
them too. We had other volunteers who weren’t members of AFPA before last week and they helped out too. Some
of them included John Islip and his Men’s Shed team who carted trestle tables and chairs and drove the community
bus. Thanks to Bruce Mann and also the guys at the Shire who were all particularly supportive of the event.
I hope everyone enjoyed the night and from all the laughter I am pretty sure that they were all glad that they braved
the weather and kicked up their heels.

own food for the horses. If anyone has any to spare, please give me a ring and we will pick them up.

WOODS FAMILY REUNION
A well attended reunion of the
descendants of William and Louisa
Woods was held recently at the
Dale Hall. Commemorating 185
years, since their arrival with their
four children, John, Jane, George
& Maria at the Swan River Colony
in October 1829. The Woods
family came from Sussex England,
sharing the 10th ship to arrive, the
“Lotus”, with some 54 others,
general cargo, 3 horses, 7 head of
cattle and 48 sheep. The voyage,
taking some six months under the
command of Captain Summerson.
After some time spent at
Fremantle, William is recorded as
a shepherd for George Christmass
in the York census for 1859 and
dying in York in 1870. John, his
son,
is
documented
as
shepherding for Edward Doncon
and eventually taking up his own
land at Turner Gully in the Dale
area. John and his wife, Elizabeth
Willis made The Dale their home
and raised 10 children there.
Some of the many descendants of
John and Elizabeth Woods live in
the Brookton, Beverley, York
Shires and Dale Hall area today.
The early family members were
hard workers at a time when
much land had to be cleared.
Providing for their family’s welfare
would have been paramount. As
with some of the early settlers,
there appears to be very little
recorded of their achievements.

sessions are held on Mondays with Time Trials taking place on Fridays.

Many years later, John and
Elizabeth’s grandson, Forbes
Woods and his wife, Marna,
contributed well to the demands of
local Government and many other
voluntary positions. Their son and
grandson’s families continue to
farm the historic “Hillside”
property today.
Many thanks to all who shared
our day, those who helped
immensely and to the Dale
Community Group who allowed us
access to the wonderfully restored
Dale Hall, from where many of us
have treasured memories.

Country Women’s Associa on CWA ‐ Beverley Branch Another month almost gone! There was a good turn up for our October mee ng day which commenced with morning tea and a chat, followed by the usual monthly mee ng. There was quite a lot of interes ng and informa ve material from State Office and much discussion in regard to plans for 2015 when our Branch will celebrate 90 years of community service in Beverley. It is perfect weather for gardening. Gardens are looking beautiful! With no frosts the vegetable gardens should
be up and thriving. It is still not too late to plant out some vegetables.
We have been on a number of excursions. A bus load of members have been to Toodyay. An enjoyable day was
had by all and we were all quite exhausted by the end of the day. We met at the Dead Finish at 8.30am and the
first stop was morning tea at Coorinja Winery, mind you, some members passed on the cuppa, then on to the
Emporium where it was hard to extract some members from, onto the nursery and a couple of hours free time.
Next stop was to see sculptures, then on to LeSteeres where briar roses are still growing and flourishing after
100 years, a lap around the block took us past where Betty had grown up.
Next on our calendar was an interesting demonstration on how grow to bonsai. We were all most enthralled,
especially Dalene, but all agreed that we probably had left it too late to see the end results!
The next outing was to visit Pingelly. A fabulous day was had by all. We visited four quite different but beautiful
gardens, and were treated to sumptuous morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea. An interesting talk was presented
by a young fellow named Scott, who was an expert on Mediterranean plants.
Recently we had a luncheon to recognise our older members, some of whom are unable to attend our meetings
and outings and others who are still very much involved with the club. A big thankyou to Glenda and Terry for
opening their lovely home and garden to us.
We are off to Williams next to look at 500 roses in the main street.
The next meeting will be the AGM, which will be held at the Dead Finish, with a high tea at 9.30am
on Tuesday 11 November 2014.

Station Gallery
Writing this on the train trip home from the national
Regional Arts Australia Summit in Kalgoorlie I can’t
help but wonder at how we’re going to find the time
and energy to put into practice all the ideas we’ve
gleaned over the past four days. Four days of back to
back key note speakers, panels, performances,
demonstrations and displays and most importantly,
networking with artists, community volunteers, arts
and cultural workers, community development
managers and cultural leaders. The next conference
will be in Dubbo 2016 so we await with anticipation as
to what Regional NSW has to offer. Unfortunately,
some of the programme last weekend had to be
changed and in a couple of cases cancelled because of
the stormy weather but the Country Arts organisers
did their utmost to make it work – not so for the train
trip back to Northam. We were four hours late
getting home due to malfunctioning of the signals
causing waits in a stationary train for up to two and a
half hours - such is our public transport system!

As we say goodbye to Mervyn Beamish who held and
interesting workshop on making your own oil pastels,
we welcome Jill Ansell in the beginning of November,
followed by Charlotte O’Shea on her return from
Scotland at the end of November. Please feel free to
drop in to meet our artists. Of special note, whilst Jill
Ansell is at the Gallery from the 6th to the 9th of
November, there will be on display a portrait of
Graeme Hobbs that Jill has painted. Graeme happens
to be Jill’s uncle, and mother was a Potts and related
to the Rumbles. The family farmed at Morbinning so
her visit may be of interest to both those living east
and west of Beverley.
Youth Workshops
A series of FREE after school and weekend workshops
suitable for youth up to 17 years (inclusive) will be
held by artist Charlotte O’Shea during her stay in
November. The programme will involve recycling
local materials to construct 3D art to display around

Positive and Active Mentoring
Being a MALE is a matter of birth, being a MAN is a matter of age, but being
a positive and active MENTOR is a matter of choice - “He didn’t tell me, He
showed me”.
Wisdom by definition can only be obtained through ageing and the
experiences we have in life’s journey. To me this means we can have a
mature young man but not a wise one!
I think this interpretation is important because it substantiates the vital role a
positive and active mentor can play for you no matter what your age.
Who are our mentors? They can come from a pool of people, but are
predominantly sourced from the following areas:

someone older;

for a bloke - Dads are our first choice (92%). This is interesting
because society’s demographics are changing. Some latest research
tells us that in 1960 10% of kids were living away from their dads
whereas by 2010 this had grown to 27% of kids living away from their
dads. This is a significant shift and one that puts additional pressure
on the vital role of mentoring;

Can be father figures, grandfathers, uncles, brothers, (mothers),
teachers, and/or footy coaches;

Sometimes it is someone who is not in your field of work or play.
When we are deciding what to do in life (whether it is day to day stuff or
longer term stuff) talking to a mentor can help us with our decision making.
This is really important both in our personal life and our work/business
journey.
A positive and active mentor:
listens to what you’re saying;
asks questions?
has opinions which you respect but acknowledges that you don’t have
to act on them or agree with them;

gives wisdom and perspective;

acts as a sounding board and confidant.
Mentoring works and understanding how is essential. With major decisions,
talking through issues with a mentor is beneficial. Young blokes, in
particular, need to tell their stories to mentors. It is by this process that they
can validate and/or question where they are at in life. It helps to clarify
issues and this then cultivates independent thinking.
There is never a time in a man’s life that a man doesn’t benefit from
having a positive and active mentor.
Mentoring is about developing relationships, it does take time and sacrifice
but it’s a two way street and everyone benefits from the role.



In the work we do, we say that we have 3 mates that we can spill our guts
to. These usually come from three categories:
a peer;

a partner; and/or

a mentor.
As blokes we need to identify who these people are. Ask yourself the
question “who is my mentor?”
Mentoring is rewarding and being a positive and active mentor is our choice.

Beverley Paralegal Community Services Wills: Recent TV reports cite and show in October 2014 where, the will was outdated and the beneficiary (son) lost everything due to the testators change of circumstances, which were not brought up to date in the will. Prominent lawyers, advice all viewers to: update wills to avoid huge legal costs. Be open and discuss with family and then dra a fair and just will, under legal advice. Review every 3 years or before, if circumstances change. Na onal Interests/ Na onal Security ‐ New Laws: Australian Parliament has enact new legisla on, as reported on most TV channels in August and September 2014 e.g. where any person/s reports to Australian media, on the ma er of ASIO or that are against the Australian Public Interest/
Security, the penalty is ten years prison sentence. If any person is suspected of these acts, the law enforcers do not have to apply for arrest or search warrants. Note these laws have not been tested. One case cites, also shown on TV where in the police do not need to obtain a search warrant. The ma er relates to spy cameras and covert equipment. The police acted on the complaint, from a member of the public as follows. “He was invited to a friend’s party and while inside the bathroom in the house, he no ced some spy camera/covert equipment hidden there. He was alarmed, as other friends and families were also at the party”. The police took out a search warrant, located and seized the spy equipment, including mobile phones and computers. Photographs were found to be unlawfully obtained. Charges were laid against the home owner, who, according to reports is facing sentencing. Cemetery Signs: For many years the fact that Beverley has three cemeteries in the town site has sometimes

Beverley Show: Our Show display was focussed on “Journeys” and on Water Carting. An emphasis being put on
watercartingfromtheearlyprimitivewaystothemoremechanisedmethodsusedincurrenttimes.
Field Trip: On September 10th we visited Bally Bally Hall, the Kilpatrick homestead, the site of the original
Kilpatrick homestead, Qualandary Crossing, the original “Uralla” homestead of John & Della McLean, Bally Bally
School site, Bally Bally Ri le Range site, Sue & Mick Martin’s home, went by Goldshaft Corner, up to County Peak
(Quajabin),nearbyCountyPeakSchoolsite,thenontotheMorbinningSchoolsiteandtheMorbinningHall.ThisHall
inmorerecentyearsbecamethehomeofMorbinningLandcareGroup.Thankstoallwhohelpedout&participated

What a fantastic fine and sunny day for our Wyandotte 22nd Annual Show, and lots of visitors. Another Wyandotte Show has
successfully gone by and started planning again for Saturday 12th September 2015, Beverley Showgrounds has been
nominated.
I thank everyone that has helped out through the year with donations and also on show day. We have had a great successful
time.
We thank Mr Noel Nelson from Bundabury in Queensland, for his judging services. Noel had a little drama with his luggage
going astray at Perth Airport. Everything turned out alright in the end.
Show entries were similar to last years numbers. One prominent exhibitor was unable to show but with four new exhibitors it
made up the numbers.
We thank the local businesses of Beverley and surrounding towns as well as fanciers for thier sponsorship in the way of
donations and trophies. A good display of trophies presented on the day with most exhibitor's winning something.
There was a steady flow of visitors throughout the day viewing the birds, some travelling long distances. The raffle was drawn
by Mr Allan Hartree of Bunbury, and results was 1st prize Daniel Osborne from Cuballing. 2nd prize
Iasmas Doornbucsh from Harvey.
We thank Cecily Gilbert of Beverley for selling tickets on Saturday morning and thank you to everyone
that gave support. Once again, on behalf of the Western Australian Wyandotte Fanciers Association
would like to say THANK YOU for your sponsorship of prizes to our 22nd Annual Show. With your

Wild Women of the West 2014 - Diamonds in the Rough
This year’s seminar opened it’s doors to some of the most glamorous ladies in the
Wheatbelt. We were all privileged when the day began with singing of Sara
MacLiver, well known soprano singer, her story touched many ladies in the room.
Life coach Jen Atkins gave us all a reality check when it comes to clean living and
then Tomas Ford rocked the hall, dancing, singing and finishing his performance
with a little crowd surfing! Our scheduled keynote speaker Judith Fordham had to
cancel last minute due to a pending court case but we all were very fortunate to
engage Patti Chong, wow how lucky were we? Patti, also a lawyer, spoke about her
life and the hurdles that she had to overcome being a Chinese girl wanting to
be a lawyer, resilience, strength and the pressure of this diamond was an eye
opener to many of us.
Congratulations to the following winners on the day: Major door prize, a gold
and diamond necklace went to Bronwyn Tilfe, the raffle winners were
bookworm package - Narelle Bailey, glamour and gardening package winner
Esmeralda Harmer and Carolyn Jenkinson won the chef package.

shopping!!! We are very grateful to the 8 girls from Beverley District High

What is the truth about forever? A one day seminar created specifically for the youth in the Wheatbelt region with the aim
of raising awareness of drug and alcohol prevention in our teens. Real life experiences from athlete Jade Lewis and her

Hello Everyone So, summer arrived, went away, came back, didn’t like the look of things and disappeared and now it’s come back again. By the me you read this it’ll probably have returned for good and we’ll all be moaning about how hot it is. Or how wet it is. Either way we’ll moan. Well I will. How are we travelling ? Pre y well actually. Crime is down with only a few an ‐social issues to report. When I say an ‐social I actually mean events which really annoy people to the extent where the police have to get involved. In a nutshell, riding your motorbikes/quad bikes/ pocket rockets around at 1 in the morning isn’t really on. We’ve dealt with a few instances of this type of behaviour in the last few weeks and in fairness to those involved they’ve taken the consequences on the chin and agree that their ac ons weren’t the best neighbourly thing to do. I respect that and I’m sure those involved won’t transgress again. What can get out of hand though is noise, par cularly loud music. There have been a few calls to us about this topic recently and in reality it’s a few too many. It’s all about that respect word (again). The playing of loud music late at night isn’t the done thing. Not all people have weekends off and some people are up early every day to go about their work. The last thing they need is blaring music at all hours. We have legisla on which allows us to seize equipment and I have and will do this again. I am tone deaf and have the dodgiest music collec on in the world so I understand that music is there to be listened to but for the sake of everyone’s sanity, listen to it at decent levels please. We’ve recently had an excellent response regarding informa on we received about a couple of Maori looking gents who have been offering to cut peoples trees down, usually for an exorbitant fee and not doing a par cularly good job either. The informa on originally came in at 5 to 5 in the evening and I immediately stuck it on an ewatch bulle n (if you have access to the internet please join ewatch at www.ewatch.com.au , it’s great). Within 15 minutes we had more informa on and it made the local radio in the morning. As a result of that and subsequent informa on we have, in a very short amount of me, managed to put together quite a detailed intelligence package about these people. Basically what has happened is that 2 Maori gents, aged about 45, wearing blue overalls with reflec ve markings have been canvassing for business from the back of a white tray back ute. They claim to be tree loppers and will do a fantas c job for you. What they do do is a pre y shoddy job and charge heaps of money for the privilege of cleaning up a er them. If you have any concerns tell them to go away and contact us immediately. Opera on Dust Off It’s s ll ongoing and it’s s ll going well. We’ve had to give some advice regarding proper storage of firearms but that hasn’t been a massive issue. Everyone who has received our advice and guidance has taken it on board with the good grace it was given and everyone has complied with our requests. Roads Policing We recently a ended a horrible accident where the young lady whilst terribly injured is very lucky to be alive. At this stage it appears that ina en on is the main causal factor. Obviously I can’t go into specifics but let me just say that if you need to send a text message or take a phone call whilst driving then stop, park up and then do what you have to do. Having almost been the vic m of a tex ng driver once I will not hesitate in dishing out a cket regardless of who you are. I’ve actually just re‐read a few old Blarney’s and the same word keeps coming up with regards to accidents; INATTENTION. Please, please be careful. A phone call or text is never important enough if you end up injuring yourself or someone else. Whilst I’m on a roll with regards to injuries, if you don’t see any police officers around and think it’s OK to drive without your seatbelts on, think again. Whether there’s a police officer 10m away from you or 10kms from you it doesn’t ma er because that toughened glass windscreen and your steering wheel will always be very close to you and crush injuries are the nasty side of nasty at the best of mes…….. Wow, that was all pre y heavy, let’s lighten it up a bit……… Nick is away at the moment and I go back the wet and miserable UK at the beginning of November. Taking my place for 3 weeks is Jamie Uncle from Gingin. Jamie’s a really good bloke and I’m sure everyone will get on really well with him. Forgive him his accent, he’s from London but we all have a cross to bear. He’s a mad keen soccer fan and is passionate about his support for Arsenal. So if you see him around just ask him about Arsenal football club and he’ll have you cha ng for hours……. Before I go can I let you into a li le secret? A certain Shire CEO is on par with the great spor ng coaches when it comes to psychology, par cularly making people feel genuinely wanted. I’m sure Kevin Sheedy, Sir Alex Ferguson, Wayne Benne and all the other great coaches could learn a thing or two from him. When I went to the Shire office recently I was approached and asked, “What are you doing this weekend, we need someone to play cricket and we’re desperate”. I genuinely felt immediately wanted and valued ;‐) Just one more thing, thanks for all the support and genuine community spirit shown at the Police golf day recently. It was a great success where we raised $3000 for Police Legacy. I’ll get round to personally thanking all the sponsors in the next week but I’d publicly like to say were it not for the support from the sponsors and Beverley community the golf day would have been a disaster. Due to your involvement either directly or indirectly it most certainly wasn’t. 3000 thanks to everyone !!! OK, that’s all folks. Lyme Disease. Causes and Symptoms

Lyme disease is an occupational concern for
people who work outdoors in certain areas
infested with ticks. A tick will settle
anywhere on a human body, but prefers
warm, moist and dark places like the crotch
or armpits. If Lyme disease spreads to the
heart, the person may feel an irregular or
slow heartbeat. The disease varies widely in
its presentation, which may include a rash
and flu-like symptoms in its initial stage,
followed by musculoskeletal, arthritic,
neurologic, psychiatric and/or cardiac
manifestations. It can affect people of any
age. The number of cases of the
disease in an area depends on the amount
of ticks in an area and how often the ticks
are infected with the bacteria. The disease
can sometimes be difficult to diagnose
because the symptoms may mimic other
diseases. Lyme disease may cause
symptoms affecting the skin, nervous
system, heart and/or joints of an individual.
It is named after the town of Old Lyme,
Connecticut where a cluster of cases was
identified in 1975, although clinical features
of the disease had been described in Europe
as early as 1909. There are more than
16,000 cases of Lyme disease per year in
the United States with a reported 330,000
in 2013. People who spend time in grassy
and wooded environments are at an
increased risk of exposure.
Causes of Lyme disease
The common causes and risk
factor’s of Lyme disease include the
following: Lyme disease is caused by an
infection from a micro-organism (Borrelia
burghdor feri), itself transmitted by a bite
from a tick, a blood-sucking parasite.
*Risk factors for Lyme disease include
walking in high grasses, other activities that
increase tick exposure, and having a pet
that may carry ticks home.
*Having exposed skin.
*People who spend time in grassy and
wooded environments are at an increased
risk of exposure.
*Not removing ticks promptly or
properly.
*The disease can be spread when an
infected tick bites a person and stays
attached for a period of time.
Some sign and symptoms related to
Lyme disease are as follows:
*The first sign of infection usually is a
circular rash that appears within 1–2 weeks
of infection but may develop up to 30 days
after the tick bite.
*Unusual or strange behavior.
*Flu-like symptoms. A fever, chills, fatigue,
body aches and a headache may accompany
the rash.
*Headache.
*Stiff neck.
*Joint inflammation in the knees and other
large joints.
*Brain swelling (encephalitis)Causeslearning difficulties, confusion, and
dementia.
*Some people may experience heart
problems- such as an irregular heartbeatseveral weeks after infection, but this rarely
lasts more than a few days or weeks.

Spring is nearly over and with summer just around the
corner now is the time to prepare your property for the
warmer months ahead.
Ensure stock water systems are ready for summer and
check irrigation systems for leaks and ensure the correct
distribution of water.
Many local government areas already have regulated
burning times and requirements for fire prevention work in
place, so please make sure you know the situation for your
area. If you have not already done so, reduce the level of
fire fuel around your property to lower the intensity of a
blaze. Fire breaks, slashing overgrown pasture, pruning
overhanging bushes and checking water, irrigation and fires
control equipment should all be undertaken. If you are
planning to do any final burn-offs check with your local
government for regulated burning times and advise your
neighbours of possible smoke hazards.
November and December are a great time to summer
prune stone fruit and pome fruit trees as it prevents the tree
from becoming top heavy and improves the shape.
Now is also the time to start planting eggplants, sweet
potatoes, rockmelons and watermelons and harvest the last
crop of potatoes.
If you are planning on purchasing sheep then consider
asking vendors to provide a National Sheep Health
Statement which describes the status of the flock in relation
to footrot, lice, Johnes disease, vaccination and worm
drench practices.

For those that already have sheep, make sure your
vaccination program is up to date. Spring is a high-risk
period for blackleg in cattle and enterotoxaemia (pulpy
kidney) in sheep. Your vet or rural supplier can supply
vaccines and advice.
Be on the lookout for declared plants such as cotton bush,
apple of Sodom and blackberry. Contact your local DAFWA
biosecurity officer to ensure that you are aware of your
responsibilities regarding weed control. For those in the
Peel-Harvey, Leschenault and Bridgetown areas,
Recognised Biosecurity Groups have been established by
the community to engage with landholders to manage
weeds and pests throughout their respective areas.

KINDY for 2015
We are all ready to welcome a new group of Kindy students
to the school for 2015, so this term we have a series of
sessions coming up for students who will be in Kindy next
year and their parents.
On Friday October 31 we have our Kindy Orientation
session, where parents can find out all about how the Kindy
program runs, meet the staff, and ask any questions.
On Monday 10th November and Monday 24th November, we
will have Kindy Play sessions, where kids and their parents
can come along and enjoy the stories, toys, activities and
playground so they will know how fun Kindy can be.
To finish off for the term, on Friday 5th December we will
have a Kindy Readiness session, where parents will have the
chance to find out about the skills that are important for
Kindy students to acquire. They will have the chance to
meet our child health nurse, speech pathologist and
occupational therapist and ask any questions they might have
about their child’s development.

Beverley Redbacks Football Club The Beverley Football Club closed the door on Season 2014, with our players enjoying a short stay in the scenic surrounds of Dongara and Port Denison in mid October. The Beverley Bowling Club 2014/2015 season opened on Sunday the 5th of October with Mixed
Social Bowls. The winners of the first competition for the season were
Royce Edwards, Jo Copping and Geoff Bremner with 2 wins and a draw from three games. The
runners-up were David Bell, Dot White and Ron Napier with 2 wins -1 (on shots up), from Reg
Behn, Jodie Bell and Bernie Howell 2 wins - 3.
The Ladies Pennants for this season started on the 7th October with a 4-0 win over Northam
Gold, at Beverley. To get the home and away games in this season, 4 double header
competitions will be played, with all league pennant games being played at one venue.
Beverley was the host club for the first of these events on the 14th, with all 10 teams (80
ladies) playing on the day Beverley played Toodyay at 9 am for a 4-0 win, then after lunch
played York Gold also with a 4-0 win. The 21st will be a single game at Dowerin then on the
28th the next double header will be played at Northam.
The Men's Pennants commenced on Saturday the 18th against Goomalling, with both teams
doing well. Division 1 (Blue) won 7-1 at Beverley and luckily the rain held off until finish of play.
Division 2 (White) travelled to Goomalling and managed to get the required amount of ends
played before the heavens opened to halt play. They won with 8-0. The Men's Handicap Singles
scheduled for the 19th of October has been postponed to a later date due to rain.
The Beverley Ladies Gala day was held on Sunday the 12th of October with players from 9
clubs attending. The day started off cloudy and cool, but fined up and a pleasant day was had
by all. The winning team was the Beverley team of Glenys Hastings (just back from holidays),
Jodie Bell, Verna McKelvie (our newest member) and Jo Copping. Runners up came from
Northam Kerry Leahy ,Gill Beazley, Leila Roberts and Helen Brown. Third place went to a
Composite team of Maxine Watts (York), Ruby Kinshella (Cunderdin), Dot White (Beverley) and
Gwen Atterby (Northam). The morning round went to the York team of Sian Smith, Dianna
Lengkeek, Norma Berry and Jan Black, while the second York team of Sylvia Davies, Nancy
Boyle, Sheila Petch and Sheila Gummow won the afternoon round.

The 2014 Season is done and dusted for another year! Here is a final recap for our season. The girls fought hard all season but unfortunately missed out on playing in the finals. The girls and Thomas should be very proud of their efforts throughout the Season! Round 14 Jenna vs Beverley 23rd August Our last game of the season was held on the Beverley Show Day in Northam against a strong Jenna team. Although we lost this game which resulted in us not making finals, we played a strong game and only allowed Jenna to score one goal, which was a fantas c effort by the girls. We love your enthusiasm and words of encouragement throughout the games. I think all the teams were very jealous that we had such a vocal, determined, commi ed and suppor ve goalie! You will be missed by all the Avon Associa on especially during Country Week! To Ali Lewis who has decided to re re from the Hockey Field. Ali has been a fantas c part of our team from the beginning. A er a nasty knock to the head this year, Ali s ll finished the season off with her ever posi ve a tude. Ali is an all round player, who can slot into any posi on on the field and will be sadly missed. To Penny Burns who will be taking some me off from the field to spend some quality me with her family. Penny has been one of our fabulous defenders and her presence on the field made the defending line very strong. She has a ‘never quit’ a tude and does not stop running in any game! We hope to see you again in the future Penny. Don’t be strangers to our games ladies…you know we love to have supporters on the sidelines! Thank you! Thank you to our wonderful Sponsors for 2014!
