VOLUME 2014, NUMBER 11
NOVEMBER, 2014
Our Call

Minister to People where
they are;

Equip Disciples on the
Journey; and to

Glorify God in all things
Many of your heard the Report of the Vision Building Team
given by Ron Delph, Chair, on Sunday. Arriving as pastor in
July, I was excited to learn that in 2010 the plans for a Family
Life Center and additional classroom space was affirmed by the
Charge Conference with the purpose of increasing ministry and
programs for outreach to the community for disciple making.
Knowing that a pastoral transition was coming in 2014, a wait and see attitude
prevailed; however, to date over $800,000 has been received toward the $1.3 million
which was determined as needed to break ground on the $3.4 million project. Money
has been received by pledges, special gifts, and fund raisers by the Vision Building
Team and most recently the mosaic tile handprints. Along the way property has been
purchased to increase the church campus, and property has been repurposed.
Conversations have been had with the City of Hurricane to have greater control of
the traffic flow through our property.
As I have come aboard as your new pastor, I have met continually with the Vision
Team. I affirm their work and continued vigilance. God has been moving in this
congregation ―to do a new thing‖. I have requested that the team be expanded to
increase participation and input, that the original plans be revised to be sure that 4½
years later the plans still accurately reflect our needs as a congregation, and that we
enter into a Capital Campaign in 2015 to take the next step forward.
I am grateful for the work of the Vision Building Team over the past years and hope
that as we approach our 100th Anniversary as a congregation in 2015 you join me in
prayer and commitment to continue ―to meet persons where they are, equip disciples
for the journey, and glorify God in all things‖. It is my hope that as followers of
Jesus, we will be guided into bold and fruitful ministry.
Grace & freedom,
Ellis

VOLUME 2014, NUMBER 11
Pastoral Assistant: Jonathan Dierdorff
This month I would like to share with you some thoughts and reflections on how we might be able to
prepare our hearts and minds as we come together in worship each week. I hope that you are able to find a
few of these suggestions helpful, and prayerfully consider implementing them into your devotional life.
1. Each week when you receive a bulletin you will find the sermon text for the next Sunday’s sermon. I
encourage you (and perhaps your family) to take some time through the week to read the upcoming
Scripture text and allow the Holy Spirit to prepare your heart and mind to receive God’s Word when we
come together as the Body of Christ.
2. Worship is not really a personal experience—it is something we do together. That is why we sing
congregational songs, listen to Scripture and a sermon together, celebrate the Sacrament of communion, and
take vows to support a child when he or she is baptized. Therefore, I would encourage you to consider the
importance of hospitality and togetherness as we enter the sanctuary. Shake the hands of strangers, introduce
yourself, and invite others who are sitting alone to come and sit with you. If you meet someone new you
could also invite them out for lunch after worship; the way to a person’s heart is through their stomach!
3. I know from personal experience that Sunday mornings can be a little bit crazy trying to get a family
ready for church. Perhaps you feel like you are triumphant if you arrive on time wearing colored socks and
haven’t forgotten one of your children at home! I want to encourage you in your commitment as you attend
worship each week, and remind you that as difficult as it might be at times, you are making an eternal
investment in the life of your family. Furthermore, in the midst of all the chaos and confusion, I hope you
will breathe a prayer as simple as, ―Lord, I need you.‖ That in itself is an act of worship and opens your
heart and mind for the transformation that God wants to cultivate in your life; it also prepares us as we enter
the sanctuary and helps us set aside other things that might be weighing upon our minds.
4. Finally, when you come into the sanctuary, know that you are with family. We invite you to fully
engage in singing, sharing, and listening. Even if a song might be new to you, we invite you to sing it out as
an offering of praise until it becomes a familiar prayer that guides you throughout the week. If you feel
―rhythmically challenged‖, it’s okay! You can try to clap along or even raise your hands in praise to our
Savior. God has not called all of us to be exactly the same (that would be boring), but he has called us to
love and appreciate one another as he made us. Our time together on Sunday mornings is a safe place to
gather as brothers and sisters and worship through various expressions in Spirit and truth. 
