DEDICATION OF THE LATERAN BASILICA IN ROME
First Reading: Ezekiel 47:1-2, 8-9, 12
This reading from the Prophet Ezekiel tells of the streaming, healing
waters that flow from the temple. These waters restore life to the
river’s inhabitants as well as the fruit bearing trees along its banks.
It is believed that the water signifies blessings, whereas the lack of
signifies trouble, hardship.
Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 3:9c-11, 16-17
Paul compares us to a building whose foundation has been laid by
Jesus. As the people of God, we can only be solid if we are
grounded in Christ.
Gospel: John 2:13-22
Near the time of Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem and saw the
temple had become a marketplace. He became angry and proceeded
to drive out the vendors and livestock. Jesus spoke of destroying the
temple and rebuilding it in three days. The Jews did not know Jesus
was speaking of his body, but when his resurrection from the dead
came to pass, his disciples remembered what Jesus had said and
came to believe the Scripture and the word Jesus had spoken.
