It was all about a young Austrian girl who thought she had a calling to religious life and struggled with her decision. I believe Mary Martin starred in that role on Broadway and then Julie Andrews played Maria von Trapp in the film version. In the story, Maria feels she has fallen in love with a widower whose children she is caring for. She goes to her superior and asks for guidance with her troubled soul. The Mother Abbess very wisely advises her through the song " Climb Every Mountain". Today we are given the same advice through the Prophet Isaiah in that first reading. That mountain is an allegory or symbol. That mountain represents the gift of Faith from the Holy Spirit. We are brought to that mountain at our Baptisms. We are asked to climb the mountain of Faith and we are promised we will reach the top and total union with our loving God in Heaven. We are asked to climb this mountain, just like every other mountain, that can be slippery , that can have dangerous cliffs and falling boulders. However, like a mountain that may have ice and snow on it, and rushing streams to be crossed, it is made of solid rock, rock which one can stand on and jump to another spot. We are asked through the climb of Faith to keep on going no matter how dangerous, no matter how scary life may be. Notice, there is Someone climbing with each of us on this mystical mountain. Can you see Him? He is able to be in many places at once, with each of us. It is our Lord Jesus Christ. In the sacraments He meets us as we pause on a level spot of Liturgy to be nourished and strengthened. Then He looks deep into our souls and tells us "Come on, get up! We still have to climb to the top. Together we can make it." And did you notice also? There is someone else on the ledge with us as we take our pause in prayer and rest. Who is that person? You recognize her. Speak to her: Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Fr. May our intention each time we pray be that our Lord grant special graces for the spiritual renewal of these United States. WORLD MISSION SUNDAY Next week, October 19, is World Mission Sunday. On this day, Catholics of the World unite at Mass to recommit ourselves to our vacation, through Baptism, to be missionaries. The Church’s missionary activity begins with the proclamation of faith: “Jesus is Lord!” He is our common hope - a hope that saves. On World Mission Sunday, we are called in a special way to be missionaries through prayer and participation in the Eucharist, and by giving generously to the collection for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith.
