As you know, our goal is to get this loan paid-off by the end of the year. Therefore, beginning this weekend through the end of the year we will have a second collection every weekend solely for the purpose of paying this debt. We have an average weekend mass attendance of 2600 adults. If each of those adults contributed just $5.00 to the second collection every week we would raise $104,000.00! With that, proceeds from recent fundraisers and the Adopt-a-Pledge payments we could accomplish our pay-off goal. Please do your part, and bring that $5.00 bill every Sunday. Thank you!! Muchas gracias!! The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica Entrance Chant: Let Us Go Rejoicing Penitential Rite (Confiteor) I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; Therefore I ask Blessed Mary, ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. Gloria Refrain Page 2 Psalm Response Page 3 Gospel Acclamation Sanctus (Holy, Holy) Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made; For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, (all bow) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. Preparation of the Gifts: Come to the Water Holy, holy, holy Lord God of hosts. Heav’n and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest! Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna... Mystery of Faith Amen Agnus Dei (Lamb of God) Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: (1, 2) Have mercy on us. Have mercy on us. (repeat) (3) Grant us peace. Grant us peace. Practicing Catholics (those at Mass each week and regular at confession) are invited to receive the Sacrament. Non practicing Catholics should go to confession before receiving Holy Communion. Non Catholics are welcome to come for a blessing (cross your arms over your chest). Page 4 Communion Chant: Draw Near Song of Praise: As the Deer Longs 1. As the deer longs for flowing streams, So longs my soul for you, O God. My soul does thirst for the living God. When shall I come to see your face? 1. Draw near and take the Body of the Lord, and drink with faith the Blood for you outpoured. Saved by Christ’s Body and his holy Blood, with souls refreshed we give our thanks to God. 2. Christ, our Redeemer, God’s eternal Son, has by his cross and blood the vic’try won. He spent his life for greatest and for least. Praise Christ, the Paschal Victim, Christ the priest. 3. Let us approach with faithful hearts sincere and claim the promise of salvation here. Christ rules our hearts and all his saints defends; He gives believers life that never ends. 4. With heav’nly bread Christ makes the hungry whole; his living water fills the thirsting soul. Alpha-Omega, unto whom shall bow All nations of the earth, be with us now. In This Place 2. My tears have fed me day and night, while some have said: “Where is your God?” But I recall as my soul pours dry, the days of praise within your house. 3. Why do I mourn and toil within, when it is mine to hope in God? I shall again sing praise to him. He is my help, he is my God. Jim’s Page Page 7 SIN AND VIRTUE XVI —The Sin of Sloth Before discussing the sin of sloth it is necessary to make this distinction: there are non-sinful emotional states which can mimic sloth. A deeply depressed person may exhibit certain behaviors that we would associate with this sin, but it is not sinful to be deeply depressed. Those battling serious depression may be listless, may be unmotivated, may find it difficult to perform routine tasks regularly or well. But these incapacities stem from an emotional reality with which the person is trying to cope; depression is actually a part of the coping mechanism. There are also those who battle depression as simply part of the fabric of their lives; they have a diagnosable, or clinical, depression for which they bear no moral responsibility. None of this is to be associated with the sin of sloth. Sloth is a radical abandonment of the responsibilities of one’s station in life. It is more than mere laziness, more than dereliction of duty. It is the abdication of one’s proper responsibilities, the willful refusal to rise up to and meet the challenges of one’s life. The slothful husband and father loses his job and makes no effort to find another. The slothful priest eyes the responsibilities of his calling and calculates just how many of them he can skirt, duck out of, or leave to another priest, and performs only the bare minimum requirements to maintain his standing in the diocese. The slothful are unengaged by their own lives, have a minimal sense of obligation to others and to society at large, and as they let go of more and more of their proper responsibilities they circle deeper and deeper into an inward and radically selfish spiral, their own inner emptiness attaining an almost gravitational pull. This cycle can be accelerated by substance abuse; drugs or alcohol might seem to relieve the tedium, the emptiness. In such cases, however, the addiction, is a mere symptom of the root problem. Breaking out of such a spiral requires above all the application of one virtue: courage. We will look at courage next week. IHM Pray for us Fr. Page 9 BIBLE CHRISTIANITY: The Church Revealed in Scripture Join Father Jim for an exploration of Scriptural passages that predict, find and develop the Catholic Church as THE Church founded by Christ. We will look at the Old Testament prophecies, both among the prophets and in Psalms, which tell of a worldwide religion which gives true worship to God. We will examine the words of Jesus about the Church He intends to found. And we will see the actual formation of the infant Church, complete with bishops, priests, deacons, sacraments and above all, the Eucharist, in Acts of the Apostles and the letters of Paul. We will study the Church described in the Book of Revelations, and we will look at the developments in theology and ecclesial organization the first four centuries after Christ. The conclusion is inescapable: "Bible Christianity" is Catholic Christianity. Saturday, November 15 in the Hall. Continental breakfast at 9:30am, talk begins at ten. Lunch provided. Bring your Bible and a rosary. RSVP to Father Jim by November 12 is greatly appreciated Calling All Women!
