The Bridge Pointe Press Happy Veterans Day! “How important it is for us to recognize and celebrate our heroes and she-roes!” – Maya Angelou Whether you are a veteran or the spouse of a veteran, you have, in one way or another, sacrificed for the safety this nation. As you age, perhaps you have considered how you will finance long-term nursing care and/or assisted living, should you require these services. There are certain benefits of which you may be unaware, that can assist with paying for such care. After all, you deserve to be taken care of as President Lincoln envisioned when he said “to care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow....” 1900 College Avenue Vincennes, IN 47591 Phone: 812.886.9870 Fax: 812.886.9871 www.bridgepointehc.com November 2014 Aid and Attendance Pension If you a wartime veteran, or the surviving spouse of a wartime veteran, with a medical condition that requires the assistance of another person, or you need to receive this care from a home health care agency or in an assisted or independent living community, a nursing home, or even from a family member, you may be eligible to receive an increased monthly pension from the Veterans Administration called Aid and Attendance (A&A). To qualify for A&A, the veteran needs to have served at least 90 days of active duty in the military, where at least one day of this service occurred during a wartime period, regardless of whether or not the veteran was engaged in combat. It also needs to be established by your physician that you require daily assistance by others to perform activities of daily living (bathing, feeding, dressing, toileting, adjusting prosthetic devices, or protecting yourself from the hazards of your daily environment). A Veteran may be eligible for up to $1,732 per month, while a surviving spouse may be eligible for up to $1,113 per month. A Veteran and spouse together may be eligible for up to $2,054 per month, and a Veteran with an ill spouse may be eligible for up to $1,360 per month. Life Settlement Another little-known benefit that may assist in paying for long-term care is the Life Settlement benefit (available to all senior citizens with a life insurance policy), which is the sale of one’s life insurance policy for an agreed-upon sum of money, often for an amount much greater than the cash surrender value. It is not a loan, and has no restrictions or requirements to be paid back. There are also no interest fees, upfront fees, or liens associated with a Life Settlement. We encourage you to take a closer look at all the programs and benefits available to assist with financing your long-term care/ assisted living needs, including the information above. The Life Settlement Fund Group is also an excellent resource and can be visited at www.lifecarefunding.com. November always reminds me to slow down and give thanks for the many blessings in life! We truly have so much to be thankful for! At BridgePointe we will celebrate the season with a Harvest Theme dinner for our residents; we will host an art walk to showcase individual talents; and will host Thanksgiving dinners for our residents and their families! I hope as you reflect on this year you find time to show appreciation for those special people in your life for all the blessings they have given to you! Thank you again for the opportunity to serve each of you! Sincerely, Briana Crutchfield, HFA Executive Director The Resident’s Loved Our Fun, End of Summer, Caribbean Dinner! November 05 November 29 Live a Dream In September Team Bridgepointe was able to grant a BIG dream for Resident Mildred W. Mildred and her family are very close and she has one grandson that she is particularly proud of! He plays guitar for John Prine, a very famous and popular musician! Our Director of Dining Services, Don, brought to our attention that the John Prine band would be performing in Indianapolis! We were able to get Mildred’s family all together to enjoy dinner and the show! This is the first time Mildred was able to see her grandson on stage playing! She was also able to meet all of his band mates! It was a very exciting and successful dream. Thank you to all the staff and to the John Prine Band for all of their assistance and cooperation! Res. It was an event-filled two days, stopping only long enough to sleep! We kicked off our time at IU with a guided bus tour of the beautiful and historic campus. We were also able to see the historic Hall of Murals, home to the famous Thomas Hart Benton Murals. Then it was back to the Biddle Hotel for a full-out “Hoosier” Buffet, featuring fried chicken, corn, sour cream mashed potatoes, rolls and meatloaf ! The meal finished with assorted pies that were absolutely DELICIOUS! Our resident’s were then treated to some wonderful entertainment from Marietta Simpson- Mezzo Soprano, and the all male award winning a cappella group Another Round. Let me tell you, they sang beautifully and weren’t too hard to look at either, especially for the ladies that attended! Residents were able to meet the IU quarterback and safety players from the football team! We finished the evening with team chants from each of the attending campuses! Friday morning we were treated to a fantastic breakfast and then more site seeing! We visited the historic Lily Library and Resident Bill R. got to go center court at Assembly Hall. It was a dream come true for him! The most magical moment of the entire trip though, was the organ tour at Indiana Memorial Union. The Webb-Ehrlich Great Organ is a three manual, 45-stop, 2,838-pipe organ. It was AMAZING. IU graciously loaned one of their organ students to play for us. She is currently working on her Doctorate of Organ and is absolutely wonderful! She was able to play almost every song, the resident’s requested, from memory. It was something our residents are not likely to forget! After a quick lunch of pizza, we were back on the bus and headed home. It was such a memorable and educational trip for our residents. We are very grateful for all of the Trilogy staff that were able to make it such a fantastic experience for them! Please stop by the activity room and look at the picture album of the trip!
