On Campus at Spring Mill Happy Veterans Day! “How important it is for us to recognize and celebrate our heroes and she-roes!” – Maya Angelou Whether you are a veteran or the spouse of a veteran, you have, in one way or another, sacrificed for the safety this nation. As you age, perhaps you have considered how you will finance long-term nursing care and/or assisted living, should you require these services. There are certain benefits of which you may be unaware, that can assist with paying for such care. After all, you deserve to be taken care of as President Lincoln envisioned when he said “to care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow....” 101 West 87th Avenue Merrillville, IN 46410 Phone: 219.756.0744 Fax: 219.756.0745 www.springmillhc.com November 2014 Aid and Attendance Pension If you a wartime veteran, or the surviving spouse of a wartime veteran, with a medical condition that requires the assistance of another person, or you need to receive this care from a home health care agency or in an assisted or independent living community, a nursing home, or even from a family member, you may be eligible to receive an increased monthly pension from the Veterans Administration called Aid and Attendance (A&A). To qualify for A&A, the veteran needs to have served at least 90 days of active duty in the military, where at least one day of this service occurred during a wartime period, regardless of whether or not the veteran was engaged in combat. It also needs to be established by your physician that you require daily assistance by others to perform activities of daily living (bathing, feeding, dressing, toileting, adjusting prosthetic devices, or protecting yourself from the hazards of your daily environment). A Veteran may be eligible for up to $1,732 per month, while a surviving spouse may be eligible for up to $1,113 per month. A Veteran and spouse together may be eligible for up to $2,054 per month, and a Veteran with an ill spouse may be eligible for up to $1,360 per month. Life Settlement Another little-known benefit that may assist in paying for long-term care is the Life Settlement benefit (available to all senior citizens with a life insurance policy), which is the sale of one’s life insurance policy for an agreed-upon sum of money, often for an amount much greater than the cash surrender value. It is not a loan, and has no restrictions or requirements to be paid back. There are also no interest fees, upfront fees, or liens associated with a Life Settlement. We encourage you to take a closer look at all the programs and benefits available to assist with financing your long-term care/ assisted living needs, including the information above. The Life Settlement Fund Group is also an excellent resource and can be visited at www.lifecarefunding.com. For more information about funding long-term care for you or a loved one, please call us today. From our family to yours – happy Veteran’s Day! As many of you know, this campus lives by a standard called “The Customer Service Difference”. With this standard we show our compassion for our residents and families. You know some of these standards as “Family Night”, “Sunday Brunch”, and “Happy Hour”. Also this campus is proud of giving back to our community, most recently donating cash and food to the Ross Township Food Pantry, walking and sponsoring at the Alzheimer’s Association Walk, competing the Taste of Care competition that raised funds for “Honor Flight, Chicago”, our annual Car show and so much more. I have to say that I am nothing but amazed at the number of people that attend and participate in each of our activities. Our staff is extremely generous of their pocket books and time to help others, both here on the campus and out in the community. This servitude is to be commended, and even though they don’t always want to toot their horn, I want each of you to know how wonder- Customer Service Moment Ann F. gets a Morning Pick Me Up from Life Enrichment staff Linda. Doesn’t she look Beautiful!! ful and how dedicated the staff of Spring Mill is to helping others. We invite everyone to participate in upcoming events at Spring Mill, ‘tis the season where family becomes even more special to all of us and we have planned more “over the top” activities you will not want to miss. In a final word, I want to thank all the families and residents for responding to our Customer Service Surveys that were just completed. We know it takes just a little extra time to stop and tell us how you feel, but be assured that we use your comments to look for ways for us to improve, we all understand that no one is perfect. Our staff appreciates this opportunity to look at themselves through your eyes and see opportunities for personal growth within ourselves. If your survey was among the many that showed all 10’s, we thank you again, but please rest assured, we are still looking for ways to be a little better.
