SALUTE OUR VETERANS
Remembrance Day is fast approaching and
this year more than any in our recent past,
we are coming together to display our solidarity as a Nation in a very powerful way.
On November 11th, we will join together to
again recognize and remember those who
have given huge sacrifices, even their lives,
to ensure that we are strong, proud and free.
Take a moment to stop at our
Salute Our Veteran’s tribute to honour
your fellow residents.
A few years ago, I had the opportunity to
meet a gentleman who toured to see if he
and his wife would like to live at The
Wellington one day. Well, the future came
and now this gentleman and his wife are
residents of The Wellington. The Moores
are “new kids on the block”. I wanted to
feature Mickey as our Veteran of Honour
2014, but as I was doing research to honour
Mickey, I was told that his bride of 69 years
is also a Veteran. Here are just a few of the
highlights from their distinguished journeys.

Tuck Shop
Please be reminded that the new hours
for the shop are 2:30 – 3:30 pm every
Friday afternoon. The Tuck Shop sells
hearing aids, batteries, fresh fruit and
baked goods. Anyone wishing to
volunteer an hour or two every four to
six weeks please contact
Penny.
The Executive would like to remind
residents that all positions on the
Executive are up for nomination. Should
you be interested in volunteering your
time or nominating a fellow resident for
a position, watch for the notice and
nomination form that will sent to each
suite.
This year the voting will be by ballot.
Residents will have from November 5th
to December 1st to declare their
intentions of running or nominating
someone for an Executive position.
Please bring your nomination forms to
the Administration Office. All nominations will be finalized and posted around
December 8th. Voting will take place
December 11th and 12th. See poster for
more details. Once the ballots have
been tabulated the ‘new’ Resident Council members will be declared and take
their position effective January 1st,
2015.
Spiritual Committee
Plans are well under way for our annual
Remembrance Day event on November
11th. The Legion Poppy box is at the
front desk in the Admin office.
Residents wishing to share memorabilia/
pictures please bring items to the
Administration office by Friday
November 7th. A special display will
be arranged for the exhibition of items
on Monday November 10th and Tuesday,
November 11th, 2014 between 9:30 and
4:30 pm each day.
The Remembrance Day service will be
held at 1:45pm in the Harvest Dining

forced to do exactly that because of
cramped spacing. Please do not
rearrange the tables and chairs and
kindly place your walkers in a safe
location.
At a recent Food Services meeting it
was discussed that the meal portions are
small. Conversely, I get comments that
there is so much wasted food. We
would like to make everyone aware that
the serving utensils are portion controlled and therefore, a meat portion is
gauged and the scoops of vegetables are
also portioned. If you would like a larger portion at meal time, simply ask
your server. We serve according to
guidelines, but we would be pleased to
serve your desired portion.
As the holiday season approaches, the
Harvest Dining Room and the Private
Dining Room will become increasingly
busy. If you are planning a special gettogether with family or friends, be sure
to speak to Kara, our Kitchen Manager
to book your event and to discuss your
menu options. Our Private Dining room
will comfortably entertain 20 people. If
you have special requests for your event
also speak to Kara to ensure that your
celebration runs smoothly.
Please continue to help us to help you to
make your dining experience pleasurable.

From The Manager’s Desk
It is clear that we are heading into the
fall and winter seasons as the weather
gets chillier in the morning and darkness
is upon us so early. Our daylight hours
are less as we turn back our clocks this
Saturday. This brings me to a few items
that have been brought to my attention
during the spring and summer months.
Our Harvest Dining Room is a lovely
room to enjoy family, friends and the
ambiance of dining out. It’s wonderful
to have a room that has so many
windows, allowing us to watch the
flowers grow that our residents have
planted and to gaze at the pond and
fountain. Sometimes we even get to
see the deer stroll through the Courtyard
or a duck land on the pond. Most of
our residents are happy to have the
sunlight shine into the room as they
dine, while others tend to want to have
the blinds drawn. May we suggest that
if your eyes are light sensitive, that you
choose a table that is not as close to the
windows, allowing most of the residents
to enjoy the view. We would be happy
to assist any resident find a suitable
table.
We have also had situations where we
have requested that residents and guests
please park/collapse their walkers to
allow the dining room servers safe

Social Committee (Cont’d)
Mickey was born in Medicine Hat. He
served in the Canadian Army Infantry
and Royal Canadian Armoured Corps,
the Royal Canadian Air Force and the
Military Reserve during World War II
and peacetime. He enlisted in the royal
Canadian Air Force in Calgary and took
his basic training in Toronto and was
transferred to the Armoured Corps at
Camp Borden, Ontario. Mickey
enlisted in the Reserve Army and served
with the South Alberta Regiment/South
Alberta Light Horse. He served for
nearly 30 years, attaining the rank of
Lieutenant Colonel, commanding form
1972 until his discharge in 1975. He
was awarded the Canadian Volunteer
Service Medial, the 1939-1945 War
Medal, the Canadian Forces Decoration
and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.
Jean was born in Owen Sound, Ontario.
She enlisted and served in the Canadian
Women’s Army Corps during World
War II after training in Kitchener, Ontario. Jean was Manager of the Canteen
in Trinity Barracks and was discharged
with the rank of Sergeant in Long
Branch Ontario. She was awarded the
Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and
the 1939-1945 War Medal. Both Mickey
and Jean have been members of the
Robertson Memorial Legion Branch #17
in Medicine Hat for over 34 years.
I was told that Mickey and Jean met at
one of the Jewish Canteen dances. Rumour has it that they were swept off
their feet. Last September, they celebrated their 69th Wedding Anniversary.
Arrangements are underway for the
band ‘thank you’ suppers during the
months of November and December.
On November 4th there will be a Falls
Prevention information session in the
Theatre at 1:30 pm. All residents are
invited to attend.
Alberta Health Services, Home Care,
will be giving a presentation regarding
Personal Directives in the theatre on
November 13th at 1:30 pm. A maximum
of 10 people will be able to participate.
Residents wishing to attend should
register by November 11th in order to
reserve a spot in the presentation.
HO! HO! HO!
By mid-November you will begin to see
Santa’s elves doing what they do best –
decorate the halls!!! Santa wants everyone to know that he needs plenty of
elves to decorate The Wellington. This
year, as in years past, residents will
decorate a Christmas tree in the alcoves
of each floor. There are plenty of trees
to be decorated. A panel of judges will
roam the floors to determine which floor
is the best decorated floor all round.
As always, everyone is encouraged to
decorate the door to their suite. Residents will do the “Welli Walk About” on
December 12th and vote for their favourite door. Only one ballot per person
will be available at the Admin. Office.
