Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time
First Reading: Proverbs 31:10-13, 19-20, 30-31
An encomium for a good and worthy wife, this passage
from Proverbs extols all the virtues which a worthy wife
possesses – fidelity, industriousness, skill, charity to the
poor, and fear of the Lord.
Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 5:1-6
Once again, Paul reassures the Thessalonians, who are
anxious about the coming of Christ, that they need not
fear being unprepared because they are “children of
light.”
Gospel: Matthew 25:14-30
Jesus narrates the parable of the talents – in the story,
the silver pieces given to the three men. Two of the
men invest their coins and double their worth, but the
third buries his coins in the ground and earns no return.
The message of Jesus is that we must use to the fullest
the talents we have received.

THE POPE’S
CATHEDRAL
This feast displaces the
Ordinary Time texts again this week. The
celebration may generate more confusion than
enthusiasm among parishioners, except perhaps
for those who have been to Rome to see the
basilica.
The name of the church itself is “The
Archbasilica of the Most Holy Savior and Saints
John the Baptist and the Evangelist at the
Lateran,” or simply “St. John Lateran.”
The reason we celebrate this dedication as
a universal feast is that this church is the
cathedral church of the bishop of Rome; that is,
the pope’s cathedral. Many people assume that
St. Peter’s has this role, but the Lateran basilica
is considered the mother church of all Catholic
churches around the world.
So, what we are really celebrating is not
the building but our identity as a global church
and our union with the church of Rome. As St.
Paul reminds us in the second reading, “You are
God’s building.” It’s a day to remind ourselves
that we are part of something much bigger than
the local parish. If last weekend’s celebrations of
All Saints and All Souls reminded us that our
family extends through time, this feast reminds
us that we extend geographically around the
planet.

In a Christian sense, a steward is the manager of the
affairs of God on earth. Everything we have is given
to us by God. Our offering is a symbolic act. Our
money makes it possible for the Church to pay its bills
and carry out its mission in Christ’s name.

FOR OUR VETERANS
O Lord, today I thank you for our veterans,
for their willingness to risk all
so that our nation might dwell
in peace and safety.
May they find the honor and recognition
they truly deserve.
I pray that you will heal
the physical, spiritual, and psychological
wounds
some of these veterans have suffered.
Bring a lasting peace to those who mourn
the loss of comrades.
Help them to find your love and mercy,
so that they may cope with the actions
they may have had to take
while they served our country.
Make them realize
that the rules of engagement in war
do not always follow
the laws of Christianity, but give them solace
by your Scripture passages that show them
that sometimes battle is necessary
for the common good.
Amen.
MASS OF REMEMBRANCE
On Thursday, November 20th, a special Mass of
Remembrance will be celebrated at 7:30 pm for all
those who have died this past year. Anyone wishing to
include a loved one to be remembered in prayer at this
Mass is invited to do so. At this Liturgy you will receive
a candle when your loved one’s name is called to be
placed on the altar. All are invited to share in this
special celebration of remembrance.

The food collection for Fr. English Center is next

GIFTS FROM BETHLEHEM
Gifts from Bethlehem, olivewood and mother of pearl
handcrafted art from the Holy Land, will be available
after Masses in the gym Saturday, Nov. 15 and
Sunday, Nov. 16. The handicrafts trade evolved as a
cultural tradition of Christians in the Holy Land for
centuries. This indigenous form of art has since become
an industry of great importance to the local people of
the Holy Land who rely on it for livelihood. More than
65% of the income of the community in Bethlehem
comes from this work. Thank you for your vital support
of a Christian tradition and in protecting this important
culture and industry.
COMPASSIONATE FRIENDS
The Compassionate Friends, a self help group for
bereaved parents, siblings and grandparents, will be
meeting on Thursday, Nov. 13th at St. Christopher
Church, 1050 Littleton Rd. (Rt. 202), Parsippany at 7:30
pm in room 101. Dr. Michael Giuliano, a prominent
Morristown psychiatrist, will discuss “How to Handle the

MASS FOR THE UNBORN
Bishop Serratelli will be celebrating a Mass for the
Unborn on Saturday, November 22 at St. Ann Parish in
Parsippany at 10:00am. This Mass is sponsored by the
Paterson Federation Knights of Columbus Councils.
FAITH, FAMILY & FREEDOM
Faith, Family & Freedom, a coalition for
Judeo/Christian values, will present, “Persecution of
Christians, Jews and Others Around the World” at
7:00 pm, Wednesday, November 12 at Masonic
Hall, 39 Maple Ave., Morristown. Keynote speaker is
Dexter Van Zile of Committee of Accuracy in Middle
East Reporting in America (CAMERA), Boston. As
people of faith, we need to pray for those being
persecuted. An expert panel will explore what else
we can do to stand up to these global atrocities
against Christians, Jews and others.
