Thanks to all of our dancers for coming out this year and participating in
our annual picnic.
The weather was wonderful, the people were enthusiastic, and the food
was great. Our square dance ladies are really good cooks.
Our first ever talent show was a big hit. Thanks
to all of you that made it such a huge success. Our
contestants were Justin Russell and The Du Whops
(Kathy Clifton and Sharon Wappler) John
McWhorter, Gloria McMullin, Merri Jo Poortvliet,
Ronnie and Mary Poe and by popular vote the
winner of the first place trophy, Glinda Torvik.
We all ways wish for more, but 69 people did
attend and enjoyed the fun and fellowship. We have
over 100 association members and it's unfortunate
that some of our members choose not to participate.
With GMS&RDA membership comes a couple of
freebies. The picnic is one of them.
Our next freebie will be the
GMS&RDA Christmas and A&R
dance on December 1. Hopefully
more will attend this event.

square dancers “See you on the flip

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE—Dorothy (Jim) Bobo
.......thanks to all delegates and visitors who attended the
October GMS&RDA monthly meeting.
Again, the results of traditional advertising-newspapers,
flyers, and demos-- has proven ineffective and costly in
publicizing square dance classes. Word of mouth, displays
in high traffic areas, social networking and the personal
appeal of the caller have attracted a few new members, but
nothing produced a large number. Got any new ideas
dancers? Call me.
Lots of people will attend the Germantown Senior Expo on
November 6. We will be dancing at 10:30 - 11:00 with
Eddie Ramsey calling. Usually there is also a swing dance
demo at this expo which does bring a lot of spectators. This
should be a good opportunity to dress out and walk around
the expo, as well as some dancing.
The GMS&RDA picnic on Sept. 28 at the Olive Branch
Picnic was great and the talent show was a blast. Thanks to
Yvonne and her helpers. If you didn't come, you missed a
great event.
We are dancing at the Mid-South Festival, with squares by
Tony Oxendine and rounds by Kay & Robert Kurcze, at the
very moment this column is being written. Kudos to Mike
Phillips and his staff for a great dance. I hope every area
dancer is attending.
The By-laws Committee made their report at our last
meeting and your Delegate has a copy for your consideration.
Please discuss this at your club meeting and instruct your
Delegate as to how they are to vote at the November 18
meeting.
We are looking for some good officers for next year for the
association. I know there are a lot of dancers out there who
would make good officers. Please call Yvonne Johnson if
you want to be an officer. We need a slate of officers by the
November GMS meeting which will be November 18.

The SPURS "n SADDLES celebrated their fortieth year dancing at the Pickering center and to the same staff, Eddie
and Gordon. (In 1973, the Germantown Park's
Commission contacted Lonnie Sesser about starting
a square dance club. Lonnie asked Eddie Ramsey.
Eddie said, "Yes." The first class was graduated in
April 1974, with Mary and Gordon Brower and Art
and Betty Fowler as 'angels.') This pictures some of
our current members - we are all looking forward
to another forty years of dance. Our next special,
New Year's Eve dance, is scheduled December 31
at the Pickering Center. Mark your calendar now!
We have no anniversaries to celebrate in November
and apparently our parents were not very active in
Februarys because we have only one November
birthday to recognize, Mary Kay Parrish. Even so,
we will conduct our "first Wednesday of the month"
ritual, devouring cake and ice cream. come help us. —Jim Bobo

The GMS & RDA meeting was called to order October
21, 2014 at 7:15 by Dorothy Bobo, President. In attendance
were 4 officers, 9 delegates from 7 clubs, 1 state delegate
and 6 visitors.
The September minutes were approved as corrected. The
following sentences were deleted because they did not
pertain to the Mid-South Festival: "If there are eight squares
preregistered, there will be mainstream and plus. If not,
only plus will be called."
The treasurer's report was approved.
Committee reports:
Advertising in the Mid-South Festival brochure totaled
$1,200 (more than the past) and have all been paid.
Area demos include the Germantown Sr. Expo
November 6th from 10-11 am that will be at the GPAC
building. The PHPs did two demos this month. One at the
Southaven Sr. Citizens luncheon and Christ the King's
October Fest.
Sunshine-Peggy Vanlandingham mailed three
sympathy and 5 get well cards. Justin reported that caller
Joe Ward past away.
TN State Association report:
JJ Johnson said the Chattanooga Choo Choo dance
was a great dance. At the state meeting it was decided not
to rent out the new floor that is being used. Four panels
had been damaged are being repaired.
Publications: The Caller. See a report by Jim Bobo in The
Caller about the cost of printing The Caller.
Special Activities reports:
Club specials: Mary Ann Walker (V.P.) read the
October and November events.
52nd Mid-South Festival: Mike Phillips made the following
announcements: This dance will honor veterans who will
do the grand march on Saturday night. The hall will be
decorated October 23rd at 6 pm. Everything is ready.
53rd Mid-South Festival: Mary Ann Walker reported
that the flyers and ribbons are ready and pre-registrations
will sold at this year's Festival. Remember, those who
register before Dec. 1st may be eligible for a free ticket.

it was totally an enjoyable event especially with the talent
exhibited. $55 was collected from non-members and the
total expense was $229.91. All said 'thank you' to Yvonne
for a good job!!
Mary Ann Walker reported that the Christmas dance
is December 1st at Colonial Methodist Church's gym (church
where B&B's dance). It will include the Toys for Tots as
usual.
Old Business:
Changes to the By-Laws were discussed. The printed
changes are attached and will be included elsewhere in The
Caller. Each club is to discuss these and tell their delegates
on how to vote at the next
GMS&RDA meeting.
There will be two votes on the changes before the By-Laws
are changed.
Publicity for new class members was discussed again.
It is still a quandary on how to attract new dancers. The
officers are still open to ideas including social media
advertising.
The GMS&RDA membership forms for the 2015
annual dues are ready. Each club was given a packet with
membership forms and an envelope for money. Since this
is the only income for GMS&RDA, it was suggested for
each club to ponder an increase for families from $20 to
$25 and leave the singles amount at $15. Delegates should
be informed at the next meeting as to what their club wants
to do about the cost of dues.
There being no more business the meeting was
adjourned at 8:15.
