The GREATER MEMPHIS SQUARE & ROUND DANCE Association , Inc. Listen to Organized December 4th, 1955 “Our fifty-ninth year” Serving the Mid-South Dance Com!munity Volume 53, Number 11, November, 2014 Thanks to all of our dancers for coming out this year and participating in our annual picnic. The weather was wonderful, the people were enthusiastic, and the food was great. Our square dance ladies are really good cooks. Our first ever talent show was a big hit. Thanks to all of you that made it such a huge success. Our contestants were Justin Russell and The Du Whops (Kathy Clifton and Sharon Wappler) John McWhorter, Gloria McMullin, Merri Jo Poortvliet, Ronnie and Mary Poe and by popular vote the winner of the first place trophy, Glinda Torvik. We all ways wish for more, but 69 people did attend and enjoyed the fun and fellowship. We have over 100 association members and it's unfortunate that some of our members choose not to participate. With GMS&RDA membership comes a couple of freebies. The picnic is one of them. Our next freebie will be the GMS&RDA Christmas and A&R dance on December 1. Hopefully more will attend this event. Again, the results of traditional advertising-newspapers, flyers, and demos-- has proven ineffective and costly in publicizing square dance classes. Word of mouth, displays in high traffic areas, social networking and the personal appeal of the caller have attracted a few new members, but nothing produced a large number. Got any new ideas dancers? Call me. Lots of people will attend the Germantown Senior Expo on November 6. We will be dancing at 10:30 - 11:00 with Eddie Ramsey calling. Usually there is also a swing dance demo at this expo which does bring a lot of spectators. This should be a good opportunity to dress out and walk around the expo, as well as some dancing. The GMS&RDA picnic on Sept. 28 at the Olive Branch Picnic was great and the talent show was a blast. Thanks to Yvonne and her helpers. If you didn't come, you missed a great event. We are dancing at the Mid-South Festival, with squares by Tony Oxendine and rounds by Kay & Robert Kurcze, at the very moment this column is being written. Kudos to Mike Phillips and his staff for a great dance. I hope every area dancer is attending. The By-laws Committee made their report at our last meeting and your Delegate has a copy for your consideration. Please discuss this at your club meeting and instruct your Delegate as to how they are to vote at the November 18 meeting. We are looking for some good officers for next year for the association. I know there are a lot of dancers out there who would make good officers. Please call Yvonne Johnson if you want to be an officer. It will include the Toys for Tots as usual. Old Business: Changes to the By-Laws were discussed. The printed changes are attached and will be included elsewhere in The Caller. Each club is to discuss these and tell their delegates on how to vote at the next GMS&RDA meeting. There will be two votes on the changes before the By-Laws are changed. Publicity for new class members was discussed again. It is still a quandary on how to attract new dancers. The officers are still open to ideas including social media advertising. The GMS&RDA membership forms for the 2015 annual dues are ready. Each club was given a packet with membership forms and an envelope for money. Since this is the only income for GMS&RDA, it was suggested for each club to ponder an increase for families from $20 to $25 and leave the singles amount at $15. Delegates should be informed at the next meeting as to what their club wants to do about the cost of dues.
