How are we doing, Sheldon? A Message from Father Tom… We Have a Great School I often like to talk about the many great ministries happening in our parish. Our support of Kaukauna Catholic School System (KCSS) is one of those great ministries. We are in the midst of changing our curriculum to make it more Catholic. This year, we are focusing on the religious dimension of our school. Every Monday, our students go to Eucharistic Adoration, and we have been teaching them how to pray. In fact, this past Wednesday I spent 50 minutes with our 6th grade teaching them mental prayer and different prayer methods given to us by the saints. The students of KCSS have really grown in their spiritual lives this first semester. The teachers have been working very hard to emphasize this new and dynamic curriculum. We have great teachers! I have also made an effort to be more present in the classrooms. For example, last week I spoke to the 5th – 8th grade boys about vocations to the priesthood. I spoke to the 6th grade about prayer. I spoke to the 7th grade about the religious symbolism in our Church, and I spoke with the pre-school students. I have given classes recently about having answers for those who challenge our faith, proofs of God’s existence and virtues. During Advent, we will be praying the Liturgy of the Hours every Tuesday morning. This is something that has never been done at KCSS, and I am excited about teaching the staff and students this ancient liturgy of our Church. As you can see, there are many great things happening in our school. I would ask you to continue to pray for this great ministry, especially for the staff and students. I would also encourage you to think about sending your children to the school so they can be formed in their faith as part of their education. I would encourage you to attend our school Mass on Thursday mornings and come to our various school events. We should all do what we can to support this treasure. Fr. Tom 2015 Easter Candle Donated Thank you to the family of Renata Vandenberg for donating our 2015-16 Easter candle. We appreciate your generosity. We continue to pray for Renata and for all who have gone before us. Congratulations to newlyweds Mr. and Mrs. Joe and Danielle Stephani May the Lord bless your marriage Mass Intentions for School Masses When you’re calling to schedule a Mass intention for a loved one, remember that you can also schedule during the 8:20 am school Masses on Thursdays. Lots of openings. 2nd Annual Widows/Widowers Luncheon Sunday, November 30, after 11:00 Mass We are excited! Fr. Willie Vande Loo will be the guest speaker for our 2014 luncheon. You won’t want to miss this event to honor your marriages. The Ladies of Holy Cross will again host a complimentary luncheon for Holy Cross parishioners who have lost a spouse over the years. Today the Church celebrates the feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome. The Basilica of St. John Lataran is the cathedral of Rome. This is not St. Peter's, but it is the Pope's cathedral. It was built in the time of Constantine and was consecrated by Pope Sylvester in 324. This is the oldest, and ranks first among the four great "patriarchal" basilicas of Rome. The site was, in ancient times, occupied by the palace of the family of the Laterani. The Lateran Basilica is called “mother and head of all the churches of the city and the world.” In fact, this basilica was the first to be built after Emperor Constantine’s edict, in 313, which granted Christians freedom to practice their religion. Lots of hands are needed for this huge job! Both young and not-so-young families - come to join us. Bring some rags and a pail. A few vacuums would be helpful, too, if you happen to have one or two. A light breakfast will be served at 9:15. Thank you, and God bless! We need all of you! “Love Lights” Christmas Tree Fundraiser at the Kaukauna Public Library Tree lighting is December 5 at 5 pm. They will be here for the next two weeks. The Blessed Sacrament -- Did You Know? Please pray for the men who are experiencing the “Christ Renews His Parish” retreat this Now that we are blessed to have Adoration of the Blessed weekend. Heavenly Father, send your spirit. Sacrament every Monday in Church, you might want to Enkindle in these men the fire of your love. know some facts. You will likely see a priest or deacon wearing a “humeral veil,” which is a cape-like vestment that Holy Land Pilgrimage Rescheduled covers his hands. The veil is used when a Benediction or The Holy Cross Pilgrimage to the Holy Land has been “blessing” takes place, which only a priest or deacon can rescheduled for November 4-13, 2015. We are excited to say impart. The hands are covered, not because they can’t touch the monstrance, but because it indicates that it is not the that most of our original group still wants to clergy doing the blessing. It is God himself in the Blessed go, so please add yourself and a friend to the Sacrament. When a lay person “exposes” or “reposes” the group if you would like to come. All you Blessed Sacrament, they do not typically wear the humeral need right now is a $400 deposit, so it will veil because there is no blessing. Now you know... be a great Christmas gift! 4 | Welcome to Holy Cross Parish · Kaukauna, Wisconsin If You Don’t Knit, You Can Easily Learn If You Already Knit, You are Needed One of our very special parish ministries is done behind the scenes, perfect for some of you who don’t want to be in the forefront. Every few months, beautiful shawls are brought to the parish and blessed at Mass by Fr. Tom. Those shawls are then distributed, at no cost, to those who want to comfort a loved one who is ill, sad or suffering in some way. They’re simply given away to make someone happy. Those shawls don’t just happen, though. Parishioners are sitting at home or at prayer meetings or in cafes having coffee or at book clubs, knitting and crocheting. As they knit, they pray for the one person who will receive that shawl. The shawl designs range from intricate to very basic, but they all so appreciated. If you know how to knit, why not start making some basic shawls? Yarn is available, so please call Kim at the rectory at 766-3773, and she will put you in touch with the yarn. Or, use your own yarn and make it your contribution to the mission of the parish. Your choice. We need lots of shawls, which means we need lots of knitters. Please be one of our special behind-thescenes people who bring comfort to those who need us. Blessings will return to you, and you won’t even know who you’re helping. But someone else will know. Please don’t knit and drive. Fr. Tom always loves to answer questions about the faith. The Faith Adventure Continues On October 29, the first grade students learned and talked about Mary, the Mother of God. They created a stained glass picture of Mary with an 8 x 10 sheet of clear plastic and tissue paper glued to it. The students enjoyed the creative activity while learning about our Blessed Mother. Today is Stewardship Sunday, so it’s a great time to review your contribution to the parish in these specific ways. Just as your family at home is asked to contribute, we hope you will do the same here at Holy Cross.
