A Message from Father Tom…
We Have a Great School
I often like to talk about the many great
ministries happening in our parish. Our
support of Kaukauna Catholic School
System (KCSS) is one of those great
ministries. We are in the midst of changing
our curriculum to make it more Catholic.
This year, we are focusing on the religious
dimension of our school. Every Monday, our
students go to Eucharistic Adoration, and we have been
teaching them how to pray. In fact, this past Wednesday I
spent 50 minutes with our 6th grade teaching them mental
prayer and different prayer methods given to us by the
saints. The students of KCSS have really grown in their
spiritual lives this first semester. The teachers have been
working very hard to emphasize this new and dynamic
curriculum. We have great teachers!
I have also made an effort to be more present in the
classrooms. For example, last week I spoke to the 5th – 8th
grade boys about vocations to the priesthood. I spoke to
the 6th grade about prayer. I spoke to the 7th grade about
the religious symbolism in our Church, and I spoke with
the pre-school students. I have given classes recently about
having answers for those who challenge our faith, proofs of
God’s existence and virtues. During Advent, we will be
praying the Liturgy of the Hours every Tuesday morning.
This is something that has never been done at KCSS, and I
am excited about teaching the staff and students this
ancient liturgy of our Church.
As you can see, there are many great things happening in
our school. I would ask you to continue to pray for this
great ministry, especially for the staff and students.
I would also encourage you to think about sending your
children to the school so they can be formed in their faith
as part of their education. I would encourage you to attend
our school Mass on Thursday mornings and come to our
various school events. We should all do what we can to
support this treasure.
Fr. Tom
2015 Easter Candle Donated
Thank you to the family of Renata Vandenberg for

parishioners who have lost a spouse over the years. Come
to 11:00 Mass on Sunday, November 30, and then to
Friendship Hall for a delicious Van Abel’s chicken buffet

Why Celebrate a Dedication to a Basilica?
Today the Church celebrates the feast of the Dedication of
the Lateran Basilica in Rome. The Basilica of St. John
Lataran is the cathedral of Rome. This is not St. Peter's, but it
is the Pope's cathedral. It was built in the time of Constantine
and was consecrated by Pope Sylvester in 324. This is the
oldest, and ranks first among the four great "patriarchal"
basilicas of Rome. The site was, in ancient times, occupied
by the palace of the family of the Laterani.
The Lateran Basilica is called “mother and head of all the
churches of the city and the world.” In fact, this basilica was
the first to be built after Emperor Constantine’s edict, in 313,
which granted Christians freedom to practice their religion.

The Lateran Basilica represents the place of baptism, so
it is a good time to renew your baptismal promises;
·
It also represents heaven, so we can meditate on the joys
of heaven and God's generosity in giving us sufficient
graces to be saved;
·
Since St. John Lateran is the Pope's church, say a prayer
for our Holy Father.

If You Don’t Knit, You Can Easily Learn
If You Already Knit, You are Needed
One of our very special parish ministries is done behind
the scenes, perfect for some of you who don’t want to be
in the forefront.
Every few months, beautiful shawls are brought to the
parish and blessed at Mass by Fr. Tom. Those shawls are
then distributed, at no cost, to those who want to comfort
a loved one who is ill, sad or suffering in some way.
They’re simply given away to make someone happy.
Those shawls don’t just happen, though. Parishioners are
sitting at home or at prayer meetings or in cafes having
coffee or at book clubs, knitting and crocheting. As they
knit, they pray for the one person who will receive that
shawl. The shawl designs range from intricate to very
basic, but they all so appreciated.
If you know how to knit, why not start making some
basic shawls? Yarn is available, so please call Kim at the
rectory at 766-3773, and she will put you in touch with
the yarn. Or, use your own yarn and make it your
contribution to the mission of the parish. Your choice.
We need lots of shawls,
which means we need lots
of knitters. Please be one
of our special behind-thescenes people who bring
comfort to those who need
us. Blessings will return
to you, and you won’t
even know who you’re
helping. But someone else
will know.
Please don’t knit and drive.
Fr. Tom always loves to answer questions about the faith.
The Faith Adventure Continues
On October 29, the first grade students learned and
talked about Mary, the Mother
of God. They created a stained
glass picture of Mary with an
8 x 10 sheet of clear plastic and tissue
paper glued to it. The students enjoyed
the creative activity while learning
about our Blessed Mother.

sophomore or older in the 2015-16 school year. If you
have questions, or would like to apply for the retreat,
please contact Jane at [email protected] or at

the 3rd annual joint-parish
Morning of Reflection. There will
be a keynote speaker, followed by

will be served. You will be home by noon. Watch for details
in next week’s bulletin.
Each year, Holy Cross Parish and St. Katharine Drexel
Parish take turns hosting. This year, it’s our turn to cross the
bridge. As ministers in the Church, it is important for us to
take time to refresh ourselves and reflect on our ministries.
We hope you will make this a priority in your day on
Saturday morning, December 6. Do something nice for
yourself and come to relax and enjoy a special morning with
your fellow ministers.
Stewardship Sunday -- A Time to Review
Popcorn Ball Factory at SKD
“For we are God’s fellow workers…” – 1 Corinthians 3:9
We are called to help God build
His kingdom on earth. We are
His eyes, ears, hands and voice
on Earth. By giving of our “first
fruits” of our time, talent and
treasure, we help fulfill God’s
call. Are you doing all you can
to help? Do you spend time in prayer every day? Do you
participate in one of the many parish ministries? Do you
give generously in the offertory collection each week?
Today is Stewardship Sunday, so it’s a great time to review
your contribution to the parish in these specific ways. Just
as your family at home is asked to contribute, we hope you
will do the same here at Holy Cross. We, too, are a family.
