Clearly, Franklin was no follower of Avraham Avinu who valued guests even at the expense of attending to G-d Himself. The Michtav Eliyahu wonders how, according to the Midrash, Avraham Avinu during a prophetic Communiqué from G-d, left Hashem to attend the visiting Angels. Indeed, not knowing they were angels, he assumed them to be as they appeared common pagan idol worshipers en route. This of course makes Avraham’s departure from Hashem a perplexing and brazen breach of protocol. The answer lies in the distinction between prophecy and the mitzvah of Hachnasas Orchim, attending to guests. Prophecy is a gift of G-d. While it may reflect a high spiritual standing, it does little to build the spiritual character of the person. It is G-d’s gift to the receiver. By contrast, Hachnasas Orchim is a mitzvah which by its very nature builds character, nurtures a noble spirit and hones the sensitivity of sometimes insensitive human beings. And so to choose between receiving a gift and doing a character building mitzvah, Avraham easily chose the mitzvah. Furthermore, Avraham’s guests indeed appeared as idol worshipping common folk. Consequently, the mitzvah of attending to his guests was even greater because the value of this mitzvah is inversely proportional to the social standing of the receiver. The less “important” the person, the greater the chesed, and the greater the mitzvah. Most people would feel honored to host a President, Prime Minister or Mayor of a great city like New York. But to help or host the man on the street, the socially non-descript, the faceless idol worshipping Everyman – that is where the truest chesed lies. For Avraham Avinu, one could surmise that the longer the guest stays, the sweeter he smells. This is not an easy perspective to have but one to which we should all aspire. If you have a halachic question, email this dedicated address: [email protected]. I welcome your comments at [email protected]. Good Shabbos. 8th, מעריב צאת השבת WE NEED YOU…Please attend Mincha and Maariv during the week. The Women’s Tehillim will meet at 3:30p.m. in the Bais Medrash. Clock Change and our Minyanim: As we changed the clocks last weekend and it is becoming darker earlier in the day, the Mincha/Maariv minyanim are suffering. As many of us work in the neighborhood or have been able to retire and are therefore available, we ask that you place a reminder on your calendars/smart phones to attend and support these minyanim. Grants: As we work week to week and day to day for Kingsway, our shul, much of our focus is on "customer service", shiurim, the quality of our davening and the rich array of programs for all of us to enjoy and participate in. To that end, you often hear us talk about the need to fund a project or sponsor an event. We want to let you know that we continue to explore the use of grants to help offset some of our expenses and initiatives. While there is nothing of substance to report at this time, of note is how there is often significant paperwork/documentation connected to these, including resumes and bios of Board members and our Executive team. We are exploring this and will keep you posted on developments in this area.
