NORTHMINSTER NEWS NORTHMINSTER BAPTIST CHURCH, JACKSON, MS November 5, 2014 NORTHMINSTER’S ANNUAL THANKSGIVING DINNER AND COMMUNION SERVICE Wednesday, November 19 ~ 5:30 p.m. ~ Great Hall Bring your favorite side dish or dessert to serve your family plus one more. Meat and drinks will be provided. Please bring serving utensils and label your dishes and serving pieces. The meal will be followed by a Thanksgiving Communion service. (Also, we will be collecting money for our annual Boarding Homes Project.) NORTHMINSTER ANGEL TREE Beginning Sunday, November 30, the Angel Tree will be in the stairwell foyer (near the Narthex) with names, ages, clothing sizes, and wish lists from children in our community. We want to focus on meeting the many needs of these children while bringing them Christmas joy. With this in mind, there are 5 items which we hope to provide for each child: 1) Warm clothing outfit 2) Jacket/coat 3) Backpack for school age children or pajamas/socks/ underwear for preschool & younger children 4) Age appropriate book(s) 5) Item(s) from their wish list. You may place wrapped gifts by the tree in the stairwell foyer. Please clearly label each gift with the full name of the child in large black sharpie (marker) directly on the present. Bows and tags often get torn off during transport so please put the child's name directly on the wrapping paper, bag, etc. Please remember that more than one person and/or family can work together to provide gifts. Let’s provide Christmas cheer for all of Northminster’s angels. Sunday, December 14, is the last day to bring gifts. Please contact Megan Mayhan at 601-624-6701 or [email protected] with any questions. Adult Studies in November Word and Spirit at Work in the World: Personal Stories November 9—Jim Johnston November 16—Kelley Williams, Jr. Adult Education Building ~ 5:30 p.m. Advent Vesper Service November 30 5:30 p.m. Sanctuary BOARDING HOMES PROJECT ~ AN ADVENT TRADITION SUNDAY, DECEMBER 7 ~ 1:00 P.M. ~ GREAT HALL For three decades Northminster has been delivering warm clothing, food and toiletries to the residents of the Personal Care Homes in Jackson. Personal Care Homes are private homes for individuals with mental disabilities. These individuals do not qualify for state hospitalization, and many of the residents exchange their Social Security check for room and board, so there is no money available for any extras. Some are in quite difficult circumstances. All of them appreciate a thoughtful visit and a gift. On Sunday, December 7, we will gather in the Great Hall and assemble all of our gifts into individual bags: a blanket, toiletries, warm socks, and cookies baked by you. We will then divide into teams and deliver the gifts to every personal care home resident in Jackson. Usually, we are finished by 3:30 p.m. This is a wonderful opportunity for the entire church family, including all ages, to participate in missions together. Help us to serve those living in Personal Care Homes. It’s a great time for fun, faith, and fellowship. We’ll follow the “normal schedule” on November 9, 16, and 30. There’s no youth group on November 23rd (the Sunday before Thanksgiving). And on November 16th, Rabbi Matt Dreffin from the Institute for Southern Jewish Life will come to share about Jewish life and faith and answer questions as we learn more about our OWN faith by learning about others. I hope your youth will be involved! First Wednesday! The Youth are trying something NEW this year! On the first Wednesday of each month, we’ll meet at a church family member’s house from 6:30-7:30 p.m. for food, hanging out, and a short devotion.
