better circumstances can be
imagined, far worse are nearer
misses than you probably care to
realize.”
― Richelle E. Goodrich, Smile
Anyway: Quotes, Verse, &
Grumblings for Every Day of the
Year
A
famous
motivational
speaker once posed the question
“Is thankfulness a survival
skill?” Perhaps most of you
would initially respond the same
as me and say that thankfulness
is not essential to survival.
Once you reach a certain age,
many of us have already solved
the necessary problems of
survival, gone beyond that and
are now working to achieve our
current goals, dreams and
ambitions. But this speaker also
provided the audience with a key
phrase: “Learn to be thankful
for what you already have,
while you pursue all that you
want.”
Too often we forget that the greatest and
perhaps one of the simplest lessons in life
we can learn is to be thankful for what we
have already received and accomplished.
Both the years and the experiences have
brought me here to where I stand today, but
it is the thankfulness that opened the
windows of opportunities, of blessings, of unique experiences to flow
my way. My gratitude starts with my parents who raised me and gave
me an incredible foundation that has lasted me all of these years and
continues with the mentors that I've met along the way who absolutely
changed and revolutionized my life. I did not accomplish anything
without the loving and giving people who were willing to give to me.
Because of all that has been given to me, I want to share with others.
Another key survival skill is producing. One you are productive, you
will find that you have more than enough to share with other. I think
back to our family peach tree as an example. Once the crop was ready,
my mom canned some for the winter, made some preserves, baked
some pies and more importantly shared the abundance of fresh fruit
with neighbors. They often reciprocated with their own homemade
items or their own harvest of produce.
This is the beginning of an incredible process of giving and receiving.
Begin the act of thanksgiving today and watch the miracles flow your
way. On behalf of the entire staff of The Amherst Center for Senior
Services, I wish you and yours a very Happy Thanksgiving and express
our gratitude to each member and volunteer for making our Center the
tremendous place that it is – we appreciate each and everyone of you!

AMHERST POLICE WANT YOU TO KNOW AND
BE AWARE OF THE FOLLOWING
SCAMS
The caller claims:
• A relative has been arrested , is in jail and
needs to have money wired to bail them
out.
•
A relative has been in a car accident and needs money for
a tow truck or to have their car fixed. Do not act
immediately even if the callers says they are a relative,
bail bondsman, or even a police officer. He/She is from
the U.S. Department of State or Homeland Security and
will ask you to have money wired to prevent your
Passport from being revoked.
If you are selling items through classified ads or the internet
never accept a check for more than what you are selling the
item for. As an example: A buyer offers you a check for
$1,000 for your $100 item and tells you to keep $200 extra for
your trouble; just send him/her a check for $700. The $1,000
check will bounce and you will be out $700 for the check you
sent.
Do not believe these callers; ask for a phone number to return
the call and contact the Buffalo Regional Office of the NYS
Attorney General’s Office at 716-853-8404, if you feel it is a
scam.

SOCIAL DISCUSSION GROUPS
BOOK LOVERS CLUB —Thursday, November 20 at
10:00 a.m. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, Annie Proulx's
The Shipping News is a vigorous, darkly comic, and at
times magical portrait of the contemporary North
American family.
In this touching novel set among the fishermen of
Newfoundland, Proulx tell the story of Quoyle. From all
outward appearances Quoyle has gone through his first 36
years on earth as a big schlump of a loser. He's not
attractive, he's not brilliant or witty or talented, and
certainly not the usual type of main character in a
novel! But Proulx creates a simple and compelling tale of
Quolye's psychological and spiritual growth. Along the
way we get to look in on the maritime beauty of what is
probably a disappearing way of life.
There is no fee to attend, but members are encouraged
to read books prior to attending meetings.
