Today we celebrate the Feast of St. John Lateran the Basilica
of the Diocese of Rome. There are four Basilicas in Rome. Most
people (like me) would first think of St. Peter’s Basilica but there
is also St. John Lateran, St. Mary Major and St. Paul outside the
wall. The oldest of the four is St. John’s. It has two histories: in
pre-Christian dating the palace was owned by a Roman Consul
or Advisor to the Emperors. In or around 313, the palace was
then given to the Christian Bishop of Rome by Constantine the
Emperor. The palace was then made into sacred space. There
are three different figures in the basilica: Jesus our Savior at the
transfiguration, the baptistery is in honor of St. John the Baptist
and the basilica is in honor of St. John the Evangelist. Therefore
both St. Johns are co-patrons of the basilica.
Parish Collections
Second Collection Today:
Gift of Warmth
Help us give the "Gift of Warmth" to children this holiday
season.
Last Week’s 2nd Collection
In 1997, I was in Rome with Bob Stewart my classmate and
friend. One afternoon we went to see all three basilicas: first:
St. Paul outside the wall (where traditionally it was thought that
Paul was martyred by beheading), next: St. Mary Major and
lastly St. John. By this time I was a little overdosed by basilicas,
and had seen enough for one afternoon. My suggestion or
request fell on deaf ears, Bob was not to be denied. He said it
was the most important and most historical of the four. So we
visited the third basilica that afternoon.
Adding a little Franciscan experience of St. John Lateran, in
1209, Francis and his eleven companions began writing a rule for
the order of poor brothers (lesser brothers). It was not structured
as traditional monastery rule of its day. The authorities in Rome
wondered whether or not the rule should be approved. They
would have been more likely to approve the rule if it was
structured more as hermits or monks. Innocent III received the
rule and literally slept on it. During the night Innocent III had a
vision, St. John Lateran was falling into ruin. Preventing the
basilica from falling was an individual supporting the walls
of the church; that figure in the vision was Francis. Upon
awakening Innocent III gave his approval of the rule of the
eleven companions of St Francis.

The JPIC Corner:
Justice, Peace, and the Integrity of Creation
WHERE ARE THE MONARCHS? Remember the countless
flocks of yesteryear? How scarce they are now! That’s why
environmentalists have just filed a groundbreaking legal
action calling on the U.S. government to recognize the grave
threats to MONARCHS, because of the extensive use of
highly developed pesticides…thus eliminating their food
supply. MONARCHS feed on the nectar of plant blossoms…
especially milkweed and goldenrod blossoms as seen on the
dunes in the fall. The threat faced by the MONARCHS is so
great that their population has declined by 90 percent from the
20-year average since the mid-1990s. If MONARCHS were
people, that would be like losing every living person in the
United States except those in Florida and Ohio. Leaving a few
flowering weeds grow in a back corner as MONARCH food is a
simple thing to do. Other weeds can be controlled with a salt
solution…much safer than chemical pesticides. These iconic
butterflies need to be protected before it is too late.
