NCS VACATION RESEARCH EXPERIENCE SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION FORM 2014 - 2015 NSC Vacation Workplace Health and Safety Experience Scholarship These scholarships are to provide students with training in workplace health and safety. Experience in workplace health and safety is a desired employer skill. At the end of the program students will be awarded a certificate that states the training they have received and the experience they have gained. Students will be provided with training around chemical labelling, induction processes, safe storage of chemicals. As part of these vacation scholarships students will acquire knowledge of the new gloabally harmonised labelling system for chemicals and will assist trained academics with applying this knowledge in the laboratory. They will also have the opportunity to develop other lab based skills. Students can state their preference for chemistry, physics and biology laboratory placements. The number of scholarships available will vary depending on the availability of funding. Duration of a scholarship is dependent upon the circumstances of student and available staff. They will be offerred in the December/January break and can range from a period of 6 weeks and up to 8 weeks and will be broken into two parts to allow for the Christmas closure of the University. It is expected that the students will be able to attend the compulsory training session in early December and be prepared to work on the program durig the first 2 weeks of December. Non attendance at this session will mean forfeiture of the scholarship. The value of a scholarship is up to $2000 and equivalent to a rate of $250 per week. The total value of the scholarship will be paid at the end of the Scholarship. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA To be eligible for the Scholarship you must be a currently enrolled student: • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate program offered by the School of Natural Sciences (completing second year or undertaking third year of the undergraduate program). SELECTION CRITERIA Selection will be based on: • • Academic merit, GPA (please attach a copy of academic transcript with your application) Suitability to undertake the proposed research, eg relevant skills and knowledge.
