The BULLDOG Quarterly Newsletter Fall 2014 Marine Corps League Wood County Detachment 1087 Website: http://mcleague1087.com Veterans Visitation Program The Commandant’s Corner The Nursing Home Visitation Program continues to grow and improve. We are currently visiting 14 different facilities. Since July st the 1 we have made 36 separate visits. Our fellow Veterans look forward to each visit. In some cases we are the only visitors these Veterans receive. Please come out and join us as your time and schedule permit. It’s a very rewarding experience for all involved. Independence Day Facebook: Mcl Detachment Parkersburg WV Marines, It’s been a busy time since I last addressed the Bulldog. The guys in the Detachment have been working hard. I appreciate all the hard work, time, skills and money that our Members have and are giving. The Department Quarterly Meeting at Post 15 went well. The Detachment had a great turn out. The nursing home visits are going strong with again a good turnout of the Members. Also, we are really making a difference in our community and to the kids in the school programs we are working on. The National Convention in Charleston was a huge success. I can’t say enough about the guys who gave toward that effort. I’m really proud to be a Member and Brother to you men and women. We have Toys for Needy coming up and Mike, Debbie and Family will again do a super job with that. We are putting the final touches on plans for the Detachment’s Marine Corps Birthday Celebration. I also hope you are making plans to attend the Department Convention in May at Mineral Wells headed up by our Detachment. Bud has been on top of that and I’m sure it will be another great time for all. Continue to recruit and join us at the Detachment Meetings. Semper Fi, Commandant Jim Furr. Parade The Mayor of Marietta and Marine Veteran, Joe Mathews invited the 1087 to participate in the Marietta 4th of July Parade again this year. We had a good showing with 3 vehicles and 20 Members of the Detachment on hand. Sam’s Club Fundraiser 20 JUL 2014. The 1087 held a very successful fundraiser at the Sam’s Club in Vienna. $1584.86 was collected. 15 Members of the Detachment present. River Roar 12 JUL 2014. The Mayor of Marietta asked the 1087 to provide the Color Detail for the Opening Ceremony of the “River Roar” in Marietta this year. Flag Folding Ceremonies & Etiquette Classes Pass-In-Reviews and Funeral Services Sr. Vice Commandant Mike Francis and Chaplain Bernie Lyons met with the new Superintendent of Wood County Schools, John Flint, on 23 JUL 2014. The Superintendent fully supports our Flag Etiquette Classes and Flag Folding Program for the 2014 – 2015 school year. Last year’s Program was well received by all of the schools who participated. The Detachment has performed four Services this Quarter. These are informal affairs with no uniforms, just great Sea Stories and camaraderie. Bring a fellow Marine and stand by for some laughter. Veterans Hall of Honor The 2014 Marine Corps League National Convention was held in Charleston, WV. The Detachment had Members working there 1 – 10 August. This was the second largest National Convention since records started being kept. Only Orlando Florida in 2008 had a larger turnout. All of the Members and their Families who came down to help earned high praise from attendees. 15 AUG 2014. The 1087 was asked to put together a Program for the dedication of the Veterans Hall of Honor at the Marietta Center Nursing Home. Reggie Pickering did a great job heading this event up. OORAH !!! The Vietnam Traveling Wall 26 SEP – 2 AUG 2014. The Marine Corps League worked tirelessly on this event. We were on the Planning Committee from the start. We provided the Color Detail and Chaplain for the Opening Ceremony and Memorial Service. The 1087 was the only Veterans Organization to take a 24 hour block of guard duty and we received high praise from everyone involved for our performance all week. The Bulldog would like to Honor ALL Vietnam Veterans, both the living and the dead. Welcome Home Brothers. Jim Furr, Bernie Lyons and Mike Francis were awarded the Distinguished Citizen Gold Medal. Mike Francis was also recognized as the National Recruiter of the Year for the United States. Mike McLain was sworn in for another year as the National Vice Commandant for the Mideast Division. Jim Furr, Jack Martin and Rich Sneigle were all promoted to Pedigreed Devil Dog in the Military Order of the Devil Dogs and received their Gold Collar. State Firemen’s Convention 14 AUG 2014. Detachment 1087 provided the Color Detail for the Opening Ceremony of the West Virginia State Firemen’s Convention at the Grand Pointe Conference and Reception Center in Vienna. Judge Advocate Scott Kirby headed it up. Mid-Ohio Valley Veterans Outreach “MOVVO” The 1087 has continued its participation with the MOVVO. The Marine Corps League teamed up with the Washington County Veterans Service Commission for a fundraiser at Walmart in Marietta, OH. We raised $582.15 by the end of the day. Chad Wright put this event together. OUSTANDING job. Morning Chow The Detachment has been gathering for Morning Chow every Wednesday. We meet at the VFW Post 5108 in Marietta. The camaraderie is great and we visit an area nursing home afterwards. Come join us. Starts at 0800. 11 SEP 2014. Marines from the Detachment were at Franklin Elementary School to mark the anniversary of 9 – 11. After the Ceremony we taught the Students and teachers the proper way to fold the Colors and Flag Etiquette. Department Quarterly Meeting & MODD Pack Growl The 1087 hosted the September Quarterly th Meeting on the 13 . There were 18 Members present and the Pack Growl was “Prosperous”. Sternwheeler Festival Once again Mayor Joe Matthews asked the Marine Corps League to provide a Color Detail. On 5 SEP 2014 we were at the Opening Ceremony for the Sternwheeler Festival in Marietta, OH. It was a hot day for September, but the Marines persevered. Detachment Picnic Detachment 1087 gathered for our annual picnic this year on 14 September. The weather was just perfect. Rich Sneigle did a great job with the chow. The Detachment Ladies went all out with the covered dishes and desserts. Sgt. Kyle Bankes Memorial 5K Run/Walk th The 6 of September the Detachment was at Ft. Frye High School in Beverly, Ohio. We were asked again to help with the Memorial Race in honor of Sgt. Bankes. First we led the race participants in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. After the Bugler played Taps, Commandant Jim Furr fired a pistol to start the race. The Modern Day Marine Expo at MCB Quantico The Expo was held 22 - 25 September this year. Two Members of the 1087 were able to attend. The new equipment was top notch. Watching the Marine Band and the Silent Drill Platoon was OUTSTANDING. All are welcome and encouraged to come enjoy a relaxing time. This is an opportunity for the Ladies to get to know one another. The Restaurant changes each month, but the time remains the same. We held a dedication Ceremony and presented a Program to Honor the Service of “The Grand Old Man of the Marine Corps” Commandant Archibald Henderson. 12 – 14 FEB 2015. Two Marines from the Detachment traveled to Charleston for a ceremony with “Woody” Williams. The 2014 National Convention Committee donated $4000.00 to his Foundation. The money will be used to help construct Gold Star Families Monuments. “Woody’s” mission is to have a monument in every state. Semper Fidelis Marine.
