We find our identity and mission in Jesus Christ and His Gospel. We celebrate our life as Catholic Christians in word, worship and service. By recognizing our baptism, we accept our call to personal renewal and reach out with the gospel message to families and individuals, extending an invitation to fellowship with us. 5800 East Santa Ana Canyon Road, Anaheim, CA 92807 ‐ (714) 974‐1416 Fax: 714-974-9630 email: [email protected] Website: sanantoniochurch.org Parish Office Hours: Mon-Fri, 8:00 am to 12:00 noon & 1:30 pm to 5:00 pm Sunday, 8:00 am to 1:00 pm San Antonio de Padua del Cañon Catholic Church Today’s Readings Ezekiel 47:1-2, 8-9, 12 Psalm 46 1 Corinthians 3:9c-11, 16-17 John 2:13-22 Page 2 Year A November 9, 2014 The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica THE TEMPLE AND WORSHIP In all of today’s readings, the temple is prominently mentioned. Ezekiel speaks of streams of living water flowing out from the temple, watering the desert, bringing life to all living things, offering fresh healing to God’s people. Paul reminds the Corinthians that their faith rests upon the firmest of foundations, Christ himself. More than that, Paul reveals that those who follow Christ are themselves temples, temples of the Holy Spirit; that is, God dwells not only with them, but in them. For the Jews of Jesus’ time, the temple had come to be identified with the presence of God and the only place where authentic worship of God took place. Jesus had a different perception. Jesus identified himself not with the temple, but as the temple. In so doing, Jesus indicated a dramatic shift in what it means to worship God, to be in God’s presence. No longer was a place to be the focus of prayer. Instead, a person, the person of Jesus Christ, becomes the center of our worship. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Since this church is the pope’s diocesan cathedral, it is significant in the history of Catholicism. Attached to the basilica is a large baptistry, whose inscription reminds us of our universal call to holiness: “Think not your sins too many or too great: birth in this stream is birth to holiness.” As we celebrate the commemoration of the dedication of this great church, let us be one with all who have been born to new life in the waters of Holy Baptism. Donated food is distributed to families in need from the ministry’s food pantry on Thursday afternoons. No person is turned down. To Service the need of the families who seek food from our pantry we need at least 120 bags of food every month. The ministry needs your help to assist these less fortunate families. We have been providing the blue bags but they are not coming back filled. If you have one sitting around, please fill it or bring back empty. The third Sunday of each month is also Green Envelope Sunday. Your donations from the green envelopes are the source of funds that enable Family Assistance to provide Financial Aid to working poor families and families at risk of becoming homeless. Should you have any questions, please contact Kevin Durkin at (714) 974-9728. Thank You For Your Generous Support. HOLIDAY ONLINE GIVING Each holiday season, San Antonio Church anticipates and relies on a seasonal increase in contributions. OOPS, DID I MISS A HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION? All Saints Day was a Holy Day of Obligation. However, when it falls on a Saturday or a Monday, the obligation to attend Mass is abrogated. For instance, All Saints Day fell on Saturday in 2014 and Monday in 2010; in both cases Catholics in the United States were not required to attend Mass. Of course, even in those years when we aren't required to attend, celebrating All Saints Day by attending Mass is a wonderful way to honor the saints, who constantly intercede with God for us. In the mid-1860’s, out of fear of Leprosy spreading throughout the islands, the Kingdom of Hawaii’s Legislature passed a law exiling the lepers to the island of Molokai to fend for themselves without any outside assistance. Soon, the church sent Fr. Damien to Molokai to minister to the sick. A man consumed by a singular sense of duty and obligation, Damien is openly and unapologetically evangelistic. He zealously strives to bring the Catholic faith and the sacraments to the sick and dying. Pope John Paul II beatified Damien de Veuster in Brussels on June 4, 1995.
