New friends, old friends, it doesn’t matter. The best part of middle school are the friendships our students make. It’s great to see our kids working together, talking together, laughing together, eating together, singing together, and learning together. ★Mrs. Westveld’s students for making 600 red poppies for the students to "wear" to the Veteran’s Day assembly. ★Substitute teachers who frequently comment, “I can’t wait to come back...the kids here at Riley are great!” ★Parent partners helping our 8th grade students prepare for their government presentations. ★Seeing 6th graders excited for their new classmate who had never seen snow before and sharing in her excitement as she threw her first snow ball! ★S/O to Montana Cates, Rylee Groenink and Logan McClimans who went above and beyond helping a substitute teacher clean up the science lab after class. ★Our partnership with Fair Haven Church in serving our families through Hand2Hand. ★Tyler Ihle for doing a great job welcoming our guests and introducing lineups at our basketball games. ★Riley Teunis for hosting a potential new student today by showing her around the school and introducing her to other students and staff. ★Thank you to Dr. Marilyn Fitzgerald for talking to some of our sixth graders about the journey of writing and for sharing her experience with microfinance. Yearbook Cover Contest ~ Designs are due to the office by Mon., Dec. 1, 2014. ✴ ✴ ✴ ✴ ✴ ✴Your design should be on 8 1/2 x 11 white paper (not notebook paper). The cover must say Riley Street Middle School with the year 2014-2015. You may submit as many designs as you wish. Must be original artwork of a current 6th, 7th, or 8th grader attending Riley Street Middle School. You are encouraged to sign your name on the artwork but it will be covered during judging. Make sure you put your NAME and GRADE on the back of your entry. We will have a front cover and a back cover winner. First place winner will have their entry on the front cover and receive a $20 prize along with a free yearbook. Second place winner will have their entry on the back cover and receive a free yearbook. MS Ski and Snowboarding Club ~ Make plans now to join the Hudsonville MS Ski and Snowboarding Club. Students in grades 6th-8th, siblings, and parents are encouraged to join. Student busses are planning on going to Bittersweet on Monday nights: 12/22, 12/29, 1/5, and 1/12, 1/19. Attention Parents of 7th Graders - Upcoming 7th Grade Health Unit ~ Your 7th grader will be coming home today with a permission slip to participate in the 7th Grade Health Unit that is coming up. These forms are due back by November 21, and are to be turned into their Computer teacher. The 7th grade Health Unit is scheduled to start on Monday, December 1. There is a Parent meeting scheduled for Monday, November 24 at 6:00 p.m. in the Media Center. This meeting is designed to inform parents about the content of the adolescence and reproduction unit. On November 11, we introduced "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?" This fundraiser will run through January 6, 2015. Before a student can fundraise, they must return their fundraising agreement form (which they received on November 11). Box Top for Education ~ Please help our school by collecting Box Tops from many of your favorite products. For each 30 Box Tops submitted to school by February 13, 2015, your child’s name will be placed in a drawing for (4) four Michigan’s Adventure Fun Park passes for summer 2015!! Be sure to submit your box tops in groups of 30 in a bag or envelope with your child’s name on it. Please do not put box tops on the paper charts. We will accept only paper (newsprint, office paper, etc.) no cardboard, trash, glass or metal. The Gator is located in the east parking lot and is open to receive paper 24/7. Riley Band Notes ~ Just some friendly reminders to band students and parents! • All 6th grade band students were given an envelope with an informational letter and a refrigerator magnet concerning their Charms account. Please make sure you received this from your student. Additional information is available on the band booster website (www.hudsonvillebands.org). • Key cards sales are continuing. Please help the boosters make this a successful sale. They support all of our bands. The cards are available from the directors and must be paid for when picked up. Please make one check payable to Hudsonville Band Boosters for the total number of cards. • The Christmas Concert will be held on Thursday, December 4 at 6:45 p.m. in the high school gym. It will include 6th, 7th, and 8th grade bands. All family and friends are invited and encouraged to attend. Its the 21st Annual Hudsonville Holiday Parade on November 22 at 10am, presented by the City of Hudsonville and the Hudsonville Area Chamber of Commerce. The parade route runs along 32nd Avenue from Highland Drive to Central Blvd. The parade route ends at the Hudsonville Fire Station on Central Blvd., but the fun doesn't end there. Wyldlife Club ~ Riley Street Wyldlife is a ministry focusing specifically on the students that go to Riley Street Middle School. We will be having our next Wyldlife club on Thursday, November 20 from 7-8pm at Searchlight Ministries located at 4020 22nd, in Jamestown. At Wyldlife club you will meet new friends, play games, and get a chance to hear a message from one of the leaders. No money is needed, just come ready for an awesome night hanging out with friends.
