January is School Board Recognition Month. Thank you to Ken Hall, Mark Davis, Jim Stuck, Larry Kapenga, Dawn Sneden, Mike Ostrander, and Steve Bowerman for their service to the Hudsonville Public Schools. ★8th Grade Exams! Students in our world language classes and Algebra IA class have an opportunity to earn credit towards high school graduation right here in the middle school. Good luck as you begin to prepare for exams! ★Congratulations to Grace Meekhof for winning the annual Spelling Bee. John Stoutenberg finished second. Over twenty students competed in this school wide competition. The winning word was PORTRAIT. Good luck to Grace and John as they prepare to compete in the regional Spelling Bee in February. ★S/O to Ben Hooper who correctly designed the solution to Mrs. Smit's Jelly Bean Problem. ★Liz Myaard for helping with the volleyball nets each morning this week in physical education class. ★S/O to our newly enrolled students for adding new smiles to the halls at RMS as well as the students who have welcomed them with true Eagle Spirit! ★Andrew Reyes for being a positive example to his peers by working extremely hard in History class. Way to go Andrew! ★The many opportunities available for our students this winter. Students are encouraged to get involved and stay involved with Renaissance, Science Olympiad, and Beauty & the Beast, Jr. 7th/8th grade students can also sign up for boys swimming and diving, boys wrestling, and girls basketball. 6th grade intramurals will start again in early February. Riley Street Reminder A WEEKLY NEWS NOTE FROM RILEY STREET MIDDLE SCHOOL Riley Street Middle School 2745 Riley Street, Hudsonvi!e, MI 49426 Phone: 616-896-1920 Riley Street Middle School is excited to announce that we will be performing Disney’s Beauty and the Beast Jr. this spring! A parent informational meeting is scheduled for Thursday, January 15, from 7:00 pm to 7:30 pm in the RMS Media Center. Parents are encouraged to attend to get all of the information about participating in this activity. Students may pick up on-stage audition packets or backstage applications in the Main Office. Sign-ups for auditions are outside of the band room. Auditions are scheduled for Thursday, January 22 in the choir room. Each audition slot is 15 minutes long. Students are asked to arrive to the auditions 15 minutes before their scheduled time. All backstage applications are due to Mrs. Maurice before the end of the day on Thursday, January 22. Students auditioning for a role must turn in their applications at the time of their audition. Please contact Mrs. Maurice if you have any additional questions ([email protected]). The performances are April 24 at 7pm and April 25 at 4pm. A rehearsal schedule is included in the student packets. Undertaking a large project such as a musical requires us to raise funds to offset the significant costs associated with a musical. Two fundraising events will take place after school next week that students can get involved in. 7th and 8th graders are invited to stay after school from 2:45 PM - 5:00 PM on Thursday, January 15th for a dance. Cost to attend the dance will be $5. In addition, a concession stand with pizza and other snacks will be available for purchase at a nominal cost. 6th graders are invited to stay after school from 2:45 PM - 5:00 PM on Friday, January 16th for a Movie/Pizza party. We will be showing the movie Beauty and the Beast and playing a few games in the gym. Cost to attend the movie/pizza party is $5. Attention Ski and Snowboard Club Members ~ We are planning on the next two weeks: •Monday, 1/12 - Bus leaves High School at 4pm, returns at 10pm •Monday, 1/19 - Bus leaves High School at 4pm, returns at 10pm Make sure you sign the Bus Sign-Up sheet in the office at lunch the day of the trip. Look for more information next week about additional dates. Winter 2 Sports Sign-ups ~ Sign-ups for the Winter 2 Sports Season continue after break. Sports include Girls Basketball, Wrestling, and Boys Swimming & Diving. You must have a current physical on file in the office BEFORE you will be allowed to try-out. There is a participation fee of $75.00 that needs to be paid, unless you have already paid for a fall or winter sport. This is a one-time school year fee. For teams with tryouts, this is not due until AFTER you have made the team. Informational handouts are available in the office for each sport. Listed below you will find team specific information regarding tryouts and/or practice times: 7th Grade Girls Basketball ~ There will be a lunchtime meeting for girls interested in signing up on Wednesday, January 14. Tryouts will be on Monday & Tuesday, January 19 & 20 from 2:45-4:15pm. You can email Coach Glass at [email protected] if you have questions. Riley Band Notes ~ Just some friendly reminders to band students and parents! • The bands are currently selling subs. All students were given a copy of the order form and information this week. If you have any other questions please contact Pam Rice at 669-8996 or 318-5141, or check the booster website: www.hudsonvillebands.org. • The pre-festival concert for the seventh and eighth grade bands will be held on Thursday, February 12. Complete concert information will be coming home in late January. • The next band booster meeting will be Tuesday, January 13 at 7:00 p.m. in the high school band room. Please come and find out about all of the things the boosters do to help our program. • Solo and Ensemble festival is right around the corner for 7th and 8th grade students. Sign up forms will be available at the end of January. The festival will take place at NorthPointe Christian School on Saturday, April 18. Participation is optional. For each 30 Box Tops submitted to school by February 13, 2015, your child’s name will be placed in a drawing for (4) four Michigan’s Adventure Fun Park passes for summer 2015!! Be sure to submit your box tops in groups of 30 in a bag or envelope with your child’s name on it. Please do not put box tops on the paper charts. We will accept only paper (newsprint, office paper, etc.) no cardboard, trash, glass or metal. The Gator is located in the east parking lot and is open to receive paper 24/7. This is a free service to you that benefits our students financially, so please feel free to use it at any time.
