October 17, 2014 What’s Right with Our School... ★Students who get involved! The Winter I sports season is upon us. Tryouts for boys basketball and girls competitive cheerleading begin next week. Girls swimming and diving practice begins too. Our Renaissance and Science Olympiad teams are just a few other ways students can get connected here at school. See Mr. Baer, Mrs. Timmer, or Mr. Richardson for more details. ★The 94 students who make up our orchestra program. You did an awesome job at your first concert of the season Thursday night. ★Our boys cross country for going undefeated this season. ★S/O to Zechariah Moore, Nate Vruggink, Megan VanDyke and the rest of Mrs. Timmer's 3rd hour class for asking valuable questions that ignite class discussion. Keep it up! ★Volleyball victories by our 7th and 8th grade teams as they closed out their seasons against Grand Haven Thursday night. ★A great start to 6th grade Physical Education classes and fitness testing this week. ★Mrs. Gina Bodziak and the entire cafeteria staff who work daily to prepare and serve nutritious meals to our students. Many new federal regulations continue to be passed down requiring school food service programs to monitor and adjust their menus. We appreciate our cafeteria staff and how they’ve done a great job balancing taste, nutrition, and value when planning a menu. ★Carlie Rozema and Mackoi Manifold who helped rearrange tables and chairs in the media center. ★Paul Reiss, Kalel Faber, and Caden Meines for putting their written responses together in interesting ways. ★Lily Brouwer took extra time to help organize math supplies for a substitute teacher. ★Mr. Richardson’s 5th hour class that shows integrity and persistence while working together to solve problems. A fun group that takes science seriously. ★Our 7th grade soccer team for finishing the season with an 11-1 record. They outscored their opponents by a 52 to 12 margin. In an effort to reduce waiting time a letter was emailed (or was mailed home to those who require paper copies) to all parents last week identifying a 50-minute window on either October 28 or 29 as the recommended conference time. October 30 (3-5:30 PM) will serve as a make-up day for parents who can’t make their assigned conference time. We recognize the conference time assigned may not fit your schedule and encourage you to show up on the time/day that works best in your schedule. Our goal is to conference with 100% of our parents during the three-day conference period. If you are in need of transportation to and from conferences, please contact the office to make arrangements. Spelling Bee ~ Students interested in participating in the school spelling and vocabulary bee should sign up with their English teachers and pick up their study packet. They may sign up until October 31. Happy spelling! Band Key Card Sale ~ The bands will be selling key cards. Each card sells for $25 and includes the 2015 coupon book and unlimited use of your card. The cards are valid now through the end of 2015. If you would like to purchase a card please contact any band student, or Mr. Good at [email protected]. Football Banquet for the 8th Maize team will be on Tuesday, October 21 right after school at BMS, in room 231 (The 8th Grade Maize team will travel on the shuttle bus with the 8th Grade Blue team). All players will need to bring $2 for pizza, as well as their clean jersey and game pants! Parents will be shuttling students over to the blue game for those that would like to attend and there will be a $2.00 charge to get into the game. Attention 8th Grade Parents ~ The 8th Grade Health Unit is scheduled to begin on October 31. We will be sending a permission This slip home with your student on Monday, October 20. permission slip should be returned to your child’s history teacher no later than Monday, October 27. Winter I Sport Physicals ~ We are gearing up to start tryouts and practices for our Winter Season I sports. The Winter 1 Season runs from October 20 - December 19. Please be aware that your son/daughter MUST have a physical on file, dated April 15, 2014 or later, BEFORE he/she will be allowed to tryout (cut sports) or practice (non-cut sports). There are NO exceptions to this Michigan Association of Athletics rule. Please make sure your child has their physical turned into the office by October 15. Sports Physicals can be obtained from your doctor's office, Med1 (459-6331 or 494-8271), MetroHealth (252-8700) and Grand Valley Health Plan (949-2410). If you need help or have any questions about this, please contact our Athletic Director George Murphy at Baldwin. There is a participation fee of $75.00 that needs to be paid unless you have already paid for a fall sport. This is a one-time school year fee. For teams with tryouts - this is not due until AFTER you have made the team. This fee does not apply to competitive cheer, as they have their own fees. In addition, please make sure to have a signed Athletic Code Waiver on file. Fines/Overdue Books ~ As we approach the middle of the first trimester, we have a number of students who have outstanding obligations in the Media Center. Notices are distributed weekly to students, please take a moment and check with your student regarding their obligations. If your child believes that he or she has received a notice in error, please have him or her stop in to the Media Center to have us double check. Thank you for your support. Book Fair is coming to RMS! ~ We are excited to announce that the RMS Media Center will be hosting a Scholastic Book Fair during the week of October 28-31. The book fair helps us promote reading by providing an opportunity for students or parents to purchase books as well as an opportunity for our library to earn free books. Don’t forget that books make great holiday gifts or stocking stuffers! For your convenience, we also have an online book fair. You can preview some items at the school book fair as well as shop online. The online fair is available from October 22 - November 6. Riley Band Notes ~ Just some friendly reminders to band students and parents! • • • A reminder to all 6th and 7th grade band parents that practice sheets are now due on the first day of the school week for the previous week. The forms are available in class and on the band booster website (www.hudsonvillebands.org). Please make sure that both the student and parent sign the slip and that the minutes are totaled. The sheet for October 13-19 should be turned in Monday, October 20. Sixth grade students and parents are reminded that the beginning band will be having their first concert on Tuesday, October 21.
