What’s Right with Our School...

sports season is upon us. Tryouts for boys
basketball and girls competitive
cheerleading begin next week. Girls
swimming and diving practice begins too.
Our Renaissance and Science Olympiad
teams are just a few other ways students can
get connected here at school. See Mr. Baer,
Mrs. Timmer, or Mr. Richardson for more
details.

program. You did an awesome job at your
first concert of the season Thursday night.
★Our boys cross country for going
undefeated this season.
★S/O to Zechariah Moore, Nate Vruggink,
Megan VanDyke and the rest of Mrs.
Timmer's 3rd hour class for asking valuable
questions that ignite class discussion. Keep
it up!
★Volleyball victories by our 7th and 8th
grade teams as they closed out their seasons
against Grand Haven Thursday night.
★A great start to 6th grade Physical
Education classes and fitness testing this
week.
★Mrs. Gina Bodziak and the entire cafeteria
staff who work daily to prepare and serve
nutritious meals to our students. Many new
federal regulations continue to be passed
down requiring school food service
programs to monitor and adjust their menus.
We appreciate our cafeteria staff and how
they’ve done a great job balancing taste,
nutrition, and value when planning a menu.

helped rearrange tables and chairs in the
media center.
★Paul Reiss, Kalel Faber, and Caden Meines
for putting their written responses together
in interesting ways.
★Lily Brouwer took extra time to help
organize math supplies for a substitute

integrity and persistence while working
together to solve problems. A fun group that
takes science seriously.
★Our 7th grade soccer team for finishing the
season with an 11-1 record. They outscored
their opponents by a 52 to 12 margin.

Parent-Teacher Conferences ~ Be sure to join us for Parent-Teacher
Conferences on October 28, 29, and 30. In an effort to reduce
waiting time a letter was emailed (or was mailed home to
those who require paper copies) to all parents last week
identifying a 50-minute window on either October 28 or 29 as
the recommended conference time. October 30 (3-5:30 PM)
will serve as a make-up day for parents who can’t make their assigned
conference time. We recognize the conference time assigned may not fit your
schedule and encourage you to show up on the time/day that works best in
your schedule. Our goal is to conference with 100% of our parents during the
three-day conference period. If you are in need of transportation to and from
conferences, please contact the office to make arrangements. Below is a

to conduct conferences.

Parent Advisory Committee ~ We are looking for volunteers to serve on this
year’s Parent Advisory Committee. Meetings will be held at 7pm
in our Media Center on November 11, January 13, and March 10.

Spelling Bee ~ Students interested in participating in the school
spelling and vocabulary bee should sign up with their English
teachers and pick up their study packet. They may sign up until
October 31. Happy spelling!
Band Key Card Sale ~ The bands will be selling key cards. Each card sells for
$25 and includes the 2015 coupon book and unlimited use of
your card. The cards are valid now through the end of 2015. If
you would like to purchase a card please contact any band
student, or Mr. Good at [email protected].
Football Banquet for the 8th Maize team will be on Tuesday,
October 21 right after school at BMS, in room 231 (The 8th
Grade Maize team will travel on the shuttle bus with the 8th
Grade Blue team). All players will need to bring $2 for pizza, as
well as their clean jersey and game pants! Parents will be
shuttling students over to the blue game for those that would like
to attend and there will be a $2.00 charge to get into the game.
Attention 8th Grade Parents ~ The 8th Grade Health Unit is
scheduled to begin on October 31. We will be sending a permission

Winter I Sport Physicals ~ We are gearing up to start tryouts and practices for our Winter Season I sports. The
Winter 1 Season runs from October 20 - December 19. Please be aware that your son/daughter MUST have a
physical on file, dated April 15, 2014 or later, BEFORE he/she will be allowed to tryout (cut sports) or practice
(non-cut sports). There are NO exceptions to this Michigan Association of Athletics rule. Please make sure
your child has their physical turned into the office by October 15. Sports Physicals can be obtained from your
doctor's office, Med1 (459-6331 or 494-8271), MetroHealth (252-8700) and Grand Valley Health Plan (949-2410). If you
need help or have any questions about this, please contact our Athletic Director George Murphy at Baldwin. There is a
participation fee of $75.00 that needs to be paid unless you have already paid for a fall sport. This is a one-time school year fee.
For teams with tryouts - this is not due until AFTER you have made the team. This fee does not apply to competitive cheer, as
they have their own fees. In addition, please make sure to have a signed Athletic Code Waiver on file.
Fines/Overdue Books ~ As we approach the middle of the first trimester, we have a number of students who
have outstanding obligations in the Media Center. Notices are distributed weekly to students, please take a
moment and check with your student regarding their obligations. If your child believes that he or she has
received a notice in error, please have him or her stop in to the Media Center to have us double check. Thank
you for your support.
Book Fair is coming to RMS! ~ We are excited to announce that the RMS Media Center will be hosting a
Scholastic Book Fair during the week of October 28-31. The book fair helps us promote reading by providing
an opportunity for students or parents to purchase books as well as an opportunity for our library to earn free
books. Don’t forget that books make great holiday gifts or stocking stuffers! For your convenience, we also have
an online book fair. You can preview some items at the school book fair as well as shop online. The online fair
is available from October 22 - November 6. Orders placed online will be shipped to RMS plus our school still

for donations to RMS teachers' classroom libraries will be available as well for those who are interested in helping teachers build

8th Grade East Coast Trip 2015 ~ There is still room for you!!! See Mrs. Freeman for information or sign up online

Riley Band Notes ~ Just some friendly reminders to band students and parents!

A reminder to all 6th and 7th grade band parents that practice sheets are now due on the first day of the school
week for the previous week. The forms are available in class and on the band booster website
(www.hudsonvillebands.org). Please make sure that both the student and parent sign the slip and that the
minutes are totaled. The sheet for October 13-19 should be turned in Monday, October 20.
Sixth grade students and parents are reminded that the beginning band will be having their first concert on
Tuesday, October 21. The concert will be held in the High School gym at 7:00 P.M. Please make sure that
your band student has their black pants or skirt, black socks and shoes, and long sleeved white shirt. An
information sheet with complete details was emailed home last week. Please contact Mr. Good as soon as
possible if you did not receive the email.

Choir Announcements ~
• Fall Concert - is on Thursday, October 23 at Fair Haven at 7:00 pm. In order to run a sound check with
Baldwin and the High School, Warm Up will begin in the auditorium at 5:30 pm. Doors will open to parents
and audience members between 6:30 and 6:40 pm. Students need to wear their black and white uniforms for
this event.

Coming Soon - Hudsonville Choirs Apparel Sale! We will soon be sending information about how you can
purchase a "Hudsonville Choirs" Hoodie or Crew-neck sweatshirt and short and long-sleeved tee-shirts. They
are a great way to show your pride and make great gifts!

Grand Rapids Drive NBA D-league Basketball Game! Our 7th and 8th Grade Choir students have the
opportunity to sing the National Anthem at the December 5 game at the Deltaplex and watch the game together.
Families are welcome! Tickets are $8. Look for more information to be sent home soon.

Century Resources Fundraiser - Our annual sale will kick-off during class on Wednesday, October 22.
Students will be taking orders for a variety of specialty chocolates, fudge, gift wrap and other items.
Box Top for Education ~ Please help our school by collecting Box Tops from many of your favorite
products. For each 30 Box Tops submitted to school by February 13, 2015, your child’s name
will be placed in a drawing for (4) four Michigan’s Adventure Fun Park passes for summer
2015!! Be sure to submit your box tops in groups of 30 in a bag or envelope with your child’s
name on it. Please do not put box tops on the paper charts. If you have any questions, please
feel free to contact the school office or call 616-292-0818.
Paper Gator ~ Riley Street Middle School has a Paper Gator for your use. We will accept only
paper (newsprint, office paper, etc.) no cardboard, trash, glass or metal. The Gator is located in the
east parking lot and is open to receive paper 24/7. This is a free service to you that benefits our
students financially, so please feel free to use it at any time.

Cash for Class with D&W Fresh Market and Family Fare Supermarkets ~ From October 19-25, and
November 23-29, purchases you make with your “yes” card will automatically be credited to our school
account. You must link your card to our school code, which is 87836. We will receive a rebate check based
on the percentage of all of our member’s purchases. (1) If you are already a “yes” Rewards member cardholder,
log into your Rewards account by entering your email address and password. After clicking “Sign in to Your Account”, go
to the “Manage Account” page to link our school code to your yes Rewards Account. (2) If you are a “yes” member but
don’t have an on-line account set up, visit the “yes” website at www.myyesrewards.com, click on ‘Register Online with yes
Card’ and follow the steps to complete your on-line account registration. During the registration process, you will be able
to link to our school code. (3) If you are NOT a “yes” member yet, sign-up on-line at www.myyesrewards.com by clicking
on ‘No yes Card’ and fill out the on-line registration form. Then you can pick up your “yes” Rewards card in-store at the

Mobile Food Distribution ~ Hudsonville Congregational United Church of Christ, and Sunrise Ministries are
partnering with Feeding America West Michigan to provide free food to those in need. The distribution will take
place at Hudsonville Congregational United Church of Christ, 4950 32nd Ave., Hudsonville on Thursday, October
23, from 6pm-7pm. There will be a large assortment of food, consisting of fresh seasonal produce and other
quality grocery items.
Halloween Open Skate ~ Georgetown Ice Center, at 8500 48th Ave. in Hudsonville is having their annual
Halloween Open Skate on Friday, October 31 from 7:00pm-10:00pm This event is open to all ages and costumes
are welcomed! Cost is just $3.
Urban HayDay ~ This fall, the Hudsonville Area Chamber of Commerce and the City of Hudsonville will be
hosting the annual Urban HayDay event, an event designed to bring the orchard experience to the city on

Holiday Assistance through Love INC ~ The year has gone by quickly and we at Love In the Name of Christ are
preparing for the holiday season. Even though the economy has improved – there are still many families in need.
We offer Thanksgiving and Christmas Assistance to struggling families that either live in our service area of
Jenison, Hudsonville and Grandville, attend a church participating with Love INC, or attend a school in our service
area. The applications are available at the Love INC office (Monday through Friday 9 am – 4 pm), 3300 Van
Buren, Hudsonville, or on their website: loveinthenameofchrist.org.
Moms in Prayer ~ Moms in Prayer (formerly Moms in Touch) hold their meetings on Tuesdays
(formerly Thursdays) at 1:15pm at Jamestown Reformed Church - 2554 Riley St. We will be
meeting in the "youth room" to the left of the front entrance. If you are interested in meeting
with other moms and spending an hour in prayer for the staff and students of Riley Street Middle
School, then you are invited to come and join us. If you would like to get weekly email updates
from Riley Moms in Prayer, even if you are unable to join us, please email Lesli Kwiatkowski at
[email protected] for this or any other questions. We hope to see you there!
Wyldlife Club ~ Riley Street Wyldlife is a ministry focusing specifically on the students that go to Riley Street
Middle School. We will be having our next Wyldlife club on Thursday, October 23 from 7-8pm at Searchlight
Ministries located at 4020 22nd, in Jamestown. At Wyldlife club you will meet new friends, play games, and get
a chance to hear a message from one of the leaders. No money is needed, just come ready for an awesome night

We are wrapping up the fall sports season at Riley Street Middle School. Congratulations
to all of our student athletes!

8th Grade Maize Football team had an undefeated 6-0 season!

Our 7th Grade Soccer Team ended their season at 11-1 and outscored their opponents by a
51-12 margin! Great season guys!

Our cross country team had an incredibly successful season. This is the first time in recent
history that our boys team has come in first place in every race. Way to go Eagles!
•
Congratulations to the Girls Tennis Team on a great season. The girls had a ton of fun, worked
hard and displayed amazing sportsmanship in practice and matches.

Many of our 6th grade girls had a great season participating in Rocket Cheer.
•
The 7th Grade Volleyball Team finished out the season with a record of 8-2 in league play and
12-2-1 overall Congrats on an awesome season!

The 8th Grade Volleyball Team finished with a 5-5 record and did a great job of learning to work
together and play as a team. Hudsonville 8th grade Football ~ Just one game left in the 2014 season! The Blue Team will be
playing Jenison on Tuesday, October 21 at Jenison. Come on out and support the team!
