What’s Right with Our School...
★Our cross country team! This is a combined team
of student-athletes representing both Riley and
Baldwin. Both our boys and girls teams have
competed at a high-level and brought home a
number of trophies this season. More importantly,
these students have formed a bond and built
camaraderie as teammates. Good luck to the team
as they wrap up their season on Tuesday at the
Holland Christian Invitational.
★The many students who can't wait to get into their
independent reading books.
★Renaissance Student of the Month and Business of
the Month incentives.
★Mr. Steed's classes for doing a great job acting out
transformations by doing the cha cha slide.
★S/O to the following students from Miss Bragg’s
math class for their exceptional work on the first
unit assessment: Lexi Halsted, Hunter Nykamp,
Kelsie Sparks, Chela Reiss, Willow Cook, Claudia
Lems, Trenten Feyen, Carlie Rozema, Grace Elling,
and Jayden Roelofs.
★Nathan Strickler for being responsible with his
independent reading.
★Fun and creative kids like Isaac Pitsch and the rest
of Mrs. Hickok's 3rd hour who play along.
★Maddie Lichti for doing a terrific job creating
interesting, important characters in her narrative
poetry.
★John Stoutenburg for always being excited for
English class first thing in the morning, for his
positive attitude, and for his willingness to help
others.
★Naviah Duron who consistently demonstrates
critical thinking skills in science class.
★Allison Warners for readily volunteering to help a
new student with some technology issues.
★Madison Cook, Yulisa DeBoer, Jolie Meza, Riley
Teunis, Kaylee Stray, Emma Costen, Hannah
Beemer, Jorja Brouwer, and Ella Fridsma for
graciously giving up sitting with their friends at
lunch to help fundraise for Feed My Starving
Children by selling frozen Gogurts & popsicles.
Such great leadership & servanthood.
★S/O to all of the awesome 7th graders leaving P.E.
class today! Great attitudes and great weather made
for some fantastic outdoor activities!
★S/O to Carson McDonald for being the very helpful
end of the day P.E. equipment collector/organizer.
Mr. Barnhart will miss Carson and his incredible
willingness to help!

Parent-Teacher Conferences ~ Be sure to join us for
Parent-Teacher Conferences on October 28, 29, and 30. In
an effort to reduce waiting time a letter was emailed (or
was mailed home to those who require paper copies) to all
parents today identifying a 50-minute window on either
October 28 or 29 as the recommended conference time. October 30
(3-5:30 PM) will serve as a make-up day for parents who can’t make their
assigned conference time. We recognize the conference time assigned may
not fit your schedule and encourage you to show up on the time/day that
works best in your schedule. Our goal is to conference with 100% of our
parents during the three-day conference period.
Student Drop-off Area and Parking Lot Etiquette ~ For the safety of
our students and drivers, we are asking that drivers observe the
“Do Not Enter” signs at the end of the parking lot. We have had
a few close calls with head on collisions because drivers are
coming in the wrong way while others are trying to exit the
proper way. Drivers should approach the school in a single file
line. It would be most beneficial if groups of cars would have students
exiting at the same time. For example if the first car in the line pulls up to
the end of the circle drive to let their student(s) exit, then
the next several cars could have their student(s) exit at
the same time. If the next group then pulls into place and
so on, it will expedite this process. Thank you for your
help with this.
Parent Advisory Committee ~ We are looking for volunteers to serve on
this year’s Parent Advisory Committee. Meetings will be
held at 7pm in our Media Center on November 11, January
13, and March 10. Email Mr. Ross, [email protected], if
you are interested in serving on this committee.
Schedule Changes ~ Monday begins a new term which means schedule
changes for 6th and 7th grade students. Sixth grade students
that are currently in Computers will be switching to Physical
Education. The other switch is for non-music 6th grade
students. The students that have Art will be changing to Teen
Leadership and the students with Teen Leadership with be going to Art.
Seventh grade students that currently have Physical Education will be
changing to Computers. 6th grade students DO NOT NEED GYM
CLOTHES on Monday, October 13.
Spelling Bee ~ Students interested in participating in the
school spelling and vocabulary bee should sign up with their
English teachers and pick up their study packet. They may
sign up until October 31. Happy spelling!
Winter I Sport Physicals ~ We are gearing up to start tryouts and practices for our Winter Season I sports.
The Winter 1 Season runs from October 20 - December 19. Please be aware that your son/daughter
MUST have a physical on file, dated April 15, 2014 or later, BEFORE he/she will be allowed to tryout
(cut sports) or practice (non-cut sports). There are NO exceptions to this Michigan Association of
Athletics rule. Please make sure your child has their physical turned into the office by October 15.
Sports Physicals can be obtained from your doctor's office, Med1 (459-6331 or 494-8271), MetroHealth
(252-8700) and Grand Valley Health Plan (949-2410). If you need help or have any questions about this,
please contact our Athletic Director George Murphy at Baldwin. There is a participation fee of $75.00 that needs to be paid
unless you have already paid for a fall sport. This is a one-time school year fee. For teams with tryouts - this is not due
until AFTER you have made the team. This fee does not apply to competitive cheer, as they have their own fees. In
addition, please make sure to have a signed Athletic Code Waiver on file.
Fines/Overdue Books ~ As we approach the middle of the first trimester, we have a number of students who have
outstanding obligations in the Media Center. Notices are distributed weekly to students, please take a moment and check
with your student regarding their obligations. If your child believes that he or she has received a notice in error, please
have him or her stop in to the Media Center to have us double check. Thank you for your support.
Academic Detention Hour ~ We have a multitude of programs to help your child succeed, from our TCB sessions,
optional Working Lunch program, and open tutoring sessions after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays. As a community
and staff, we believe strongly that 100% of our students should complete 100% of their assignments. In order to help
ensure all students learn, we will continue to run our Academic Detention Hour. These mandatory sessions will take place
after-school and/or during lunch time and will be assigned to students who fail to complete the required course work in
their classes. Parents will be notified in advance by the teacher and/or our Dean of Students, Mr. Baer.
8th Grade East Coast Trip 2015 ~ There is still room for you!!! See Mrs. Freeman for information or sign up
online at www.eastcoasttrip.com/riley-street-middle-school.html. Don't miss out on this opportunity to make
middle school memories that will last a lifetime!

Renaissance News
Renaissance Celebration ~ On Friday, Sept. 27, we had a chance to honor our Blue & Gold Level Renaissance students
with our monthly GoGurt Friday. Every student who has earned Blue or Gold Level status was given a frozen GoGurt to
celebrate their efforts from last trimester.
Also with the month of October in full swing, we wanted to highlight our Gold Level Members of Renaissance and the next
Business of the Month. Vitale’s Pizza is graciously offering a Free Personal Cheese or Pepperoni Pizza for carryout. Make
sure you bring your Business of the Month Card, your ID, and say thank you to Joanne for supporting our Renaissance kids. It's businesses like this that make our community great! Thanks Joanne and all the staff at Vitale’s Pizza!
Renaissance has been adding more incentives to our list of Gold and Blue members this year. Check out our website or scan
our QR code to see who's on Renaissance and how to become a member: https://sites.google.com/a/hpseagles.net/rms-eaglerenaissance/.
