Last month we heard an excellent talk from the President and CEO of Contoural, Mark Diamond, on “How to Prevent Employees from Hoarding Documents.” It was a real privilege to have Mark speak to our chapter. This month we have another great speaker lined up: Nick Loy from BancTec will be speaking on “Enterprise Information Management.” I would like to a moment to introduce our newest Board Member - Eric Sedwick. Eric is the Vice President – Records Management at Frost Bank, and he is our new Vice President of Professional Development. Eric will be in charge of planning our Seminar in February. This year we will be combining forces with the Austin ARMA chapter to have a seminar in San Marcos. Please save the date - the seminar will be on Friday February 20th. Who: ARMA Austin/San Antonio Chapters What: Joint Annual Seminar When: Friday, February 20, 2015 Where: The City of San Marcos – Activity Center, 501 E. Hopkins Street, San Marcos, Texas 78666 The ARMA Chapters of Austin and San Antonio are combining their membership and knowledge to present our next Annual Seminar in February of 2015! This effort will include an all-day event with the morning session’s focus on Information Governance Insights and Call to Action. We’ll also have a panel discussion, focusing on the topic, “IT and Records Management, Can This Marriage Be Saved.” The afternoon will have two tracks for you to choose with topics such as: “Presenting RIM to the Executive Team,” “Setting the Stage for Automatic Disposition,” “Change Management,” and “Data Management/ eRecords.” Please put this event on your calendars as this should be a great opportunity to meet with your peers, partner vendors and learn from some industry experts. For our CRMs, the Seminar will provide an estimated 5.5 CRM credit hours. Lunch and refreshments will be included during the day. Page 3 ARMA San Antonio Collaborator Interesting Reading Why is the Cuomo Administration Automatically Deleting State Employees’ Emails? By Theodoric Meyer, ProPublica, Aug. 11, 2014. New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s administration - which the governor pledged would be the most transparent in state history - has quietly adopted policies that allow it to purge the emails of tens of thousands of state employees, cutting off a key avenue for understanding and investigating state government. Last year, the state started deleting any emails more than 90 days old that users hadn't specifically saved - a much more aggressive stance than many other states. This article investigates the problems with automatically deleting email, especially for government agencies, the rationale for why they are doing so, and policies adopted by different states to handle their email backlog. Page 4 ARMA San Antonio Collaborator Getting to Know…… By Mandy Cockrell One of the benefits of our ARMA Chapter is that it gives me a chance to network with people from various professions. During one of our educational luncheons I had the opportunity to meet David Kilgore. David is an attorney with Rackspace Hosting, but after talking to him I learned that he is not your average lawyer. David was born in Austin, Texas and grew up just south of Houston. He enjoys spending time with his wife Susan, their 2 dogs and their cat. His hobby is motor sports, which tells us he likes life in fast lane. This is probably why he works for the fast moving company, Rackspace Hosting. David is the technical liaison between legal and the rest of the organization. E-Discovery, Records Management, Information Governance, and general technology support are his primary tasks. Prior to working at Rackspace, David worked 20 years as Director of Technology in Rice University’s Jones Graduate School of Business and also spent 7 years as a Timing and Scoring official for professional sports car and motorcycle racing series. David holds a JD from St. Mary’s University School of Law, and a BA from the University of Houston-Clear Lake. David has come to ARMA to learn more about records and information management. I really enjoyed meeting David and I look forward to sharing records management ideas with him. And if you have a good records management story, David and I would love to hear it. . Page 5 ARMA San Antonio Collaborator SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE The San Antonio chapter of ARMA has scholarships available for persons seeking to obtain training in records management. Funds for the scholarships are raised from the annual golf tournament and ARMA Shred Day. Who is eligible? Applicants must be a member of the San Antonio chapter or a student pursuing a career as a records manager who is a resident of Bexar or an adjacent county. How much is the scholarship for? Recipients will receive an award for up to $500 for covered expenses. No more than $500 will be awarded per person per ARMA fiscal year (July – June). What types of programs are covered by the scholarships? • • • • • • • • College work directly related to records & information management Seminars Conferences Online courses Webinars CRM exam preparatory classes Monthly ARMA Chapter workshops and luncheons Costs of taking CRM exams (pays for one time registration for an exam once that exam part has been passed). Scholarships can pay for registration for eligible courses, course materials, travel, and the registration cost for taking a CRM exam part. The application cost for the CRM examination process is not covered. Are there any requirements for scholarship recipients? Those receiving a regular scholarship must either write an article for the monthly newsletter with an overview of the educational experience and what was learned or present a brief oral overview for an ARMA meeting. Requests for scholarships must be submitted one month prior to the event to give the Scholarship Committee time to evaluate the request and notify the recipient. Where do I find the application form?
