Historically speaking, the first record of a Thanksgiving celebration in America
was in December 1621 during the second winter experienced by the colonists.
Of the original 102 people, 44 died during the first winter and the rest were
saved through providential circumstances including an abundant first crop
(assisted by local, native Americans) and the non-hostile nature of the native
American tribes surrounding them.
During the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln officially set
aside the last Thursday of November, in 1863, “as a day of thanksgiving and
praise to our beneficent Father.” In 1941, Congress ruled that the fourth Thursday of November be observed as Thanksgiving Day and be a legal holiday.
From a biblical perspective, thanksgiving and gratitude to God are central themes and are repeatedly commanded.
1 Thessalonians 5:18 “In everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you
in Christ Jesus.”
Colossians 3:17 “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in
the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”
Philippians 4:6 “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God"
Psalm 100:4 “Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give
thanks to him and praise his name.”
Why does God repeatedly command us to give Him thanks? Even “in
everything”? Well…let’s assume God is good. Assume God’s commands are
either for our protection or for our blessing or both. Assume what God commands He gives the ability to fulfill.
What happens to us when we give thanks to God? We acknowledge
that God is God. We recognize that God is our creator and sustainer. We align
our hearts and minds to the true nature of reality (there is a God who loves us,
provides for us, and has made covenant with us in Christ). Our hearts and
minds become resilient. We demonstrate faith, and because faith is like a muscle, our faith grows. We resist the allure of resentment, bitterness, and cynicism. We become generous in spirit and in action. We can face the future with
steadfastness and even joy.
So as we approach Thanksgiving and the Christmas season, don’t forget to thank God. Turn your heart, mind and mouth into a source of blessing
and thanksgiving. And remember that of all of God’s gifts, the greatest one He
has given is the gift of His Son, Jesus Christ. For this gift of His Son, the gift
which meets our greatest need, the Apostle Paul says, "Thanks be to God for
His indescribable gift!" (2 Corinthians 9:15).

YOUR COUNCIL AT WORK
October 2014
Your Council met on October 21, 2014 for its regular stated meeting with your newly elected Council
members.

Council discussed the requests contained in the letter from St. Andrew Church in Marble Falls, then
favoring decided to take no formal action with respect to those requests.
 Council accepted the audit of the WPC books by Ginny Butterfield with thanks to her for performing
that service for WPC.
 Council also heard general reports from the Committees and Pastor.

Deer Creek Nursing Home
We gather every other month to conduct a brief 30-minute worship
service for those in the Deer Creek facility. Our next time is Sunday,
November 16 at 3:30pm. We sing old Gospel hymns, visit with the
folks who come, read a bit of Scripture and sing some more. The residents who come always appreciate our presence.

GIFTS THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Wimberley Presbyterian Church will host a Christmas Market on November 8 from 10am-2pm
in the fellowship hall of their church. This is not just another Christmas Market. They are offering
an incredible assortment of one-of-a-kind products made by artisans from a range of developing
countries. These artisan communities are rich with unique, traditional art forms but lack access
to knowledge of outside markets. In addition, our local Quilters Guild will be selling quilts to benefit the Women’s Shelter in San Marcos.
By purchasing these products, you can help artisans break the cycle of poverty and support their
families through fair payments and respectable relationships. Every basket, every tablecloth and
every necklace has a face behind it—an artisan, who works in a safe environment, can send their
child to school and can save for the future.
The artisan partners seek to empower the women in their communities. In addition to paying fairly and equally, they nurture environments where women can network and support one another.
Through employment in handcrafts, women can more easily work out of their home which allows
them to care for their families.
The tablecloths are one example of how unique these items are. The cotton fabric is purchased
locally in Jaiper, India. The women use a methodical hand block printing process where each
color and pattern are printed one at a time. Each wooden block is only a few inches in size so
the work is very time-intensive. Every item is custom-made and not mass-produced.
This Christmas Market is an example of the Social Entrepreneurship trend that is growing across
the USA. This trend is the process of pursuing innovative solutions to social problems. Social
Entrepreneurs adopt a mission to create and sustain social value. Business Entrepreneurs typically measure performance in profit and return, but social entrepreneurs also take into account a
positive return to society.
Not only can we purchase incredible unique gifts for our loved ones this Christmas, but we can
also improve the economics and social standing of under-privileged people in the world by reinforcing local economics and creating self-sustainable employment.

Brown Bag Bible Study
Pastor Clint has resumed the Brown Big Bible Study every
Tuesday from noon - 1:00pm in the fellowship hall. The
focus of this study is from the Gospel of Matthew.

Drive for Winter Wear & Blankets
The Amigos de Jesús annual drive for men’s winter gear and blankets for
the day laborers begins November 1. Donations of any of the following
items, either new or in good used (clean, mended, wearable) condition, will
be greatly appreciated: blankets, men’s coats/jackets, work gloves, stocking caps, work boots, work socks. Please bring your donations to the
fellowship hall by Wednesday, November 19. Items will be distributed to
the men on Saturday, December 6 at the Catholic Church.

Breathe: Making Room for Sabbath

Join us for this 5-week study
If you are weary, worn out, and exhausted,
the concept of Sabbath will change your life.
One of the greatest challenges among women in our culture is taking time to stop and cease from all
the activities and busyness and just breathe. We constantly strive to complete the limitless to-do lists
that hinder us from experiencing all that God has for us. We miss the moments because we rush
ahead to the next thing.
It is time for us to breathe and build margin into our lives for God. In the Old Testament, God instituted
principles and laws that would transform the Israelites' mindset. He didn't just want them legally free;
He wanted them to be able to walk in the freedom and enjoy it. Sabbath was intended as a gift, and it
is still a gift to us today.
Midwinter Retreats @ Mo 2015
It is time to register for a Midwinter Retreat at Mo Ranch in Hunt, Texas. This is Mission
Presbytery’s annual Youth Conference. The senior high retreat is January 16-18, 2015
and the junior high retreat is January 30-February 1, 2015.
If you have a youth that would be interested in going, or if you want to learn more about

It is $20 to sign up for one child, or $35 if there are two youth in the family. The deadline
for registration is November 30, 2014.
