It’s Great To Be Alive! It’s Great To Be A Conk!
Message from Principal, John Kniseley
Parents and Guardians,
We recently concluded 1st quarter and I strongly encourage parents to take an active role in monitoring
their student’s grades online and communicate with teachers if you have any questions or concerns.
You can view student grades by going to our school website, http://www.kent.k12.wa.us/KW and
clicking on Family Access at the top of the page. Parent Conference Night is Tuesday, November 25
and provides an excellent opportunity to discuss with teachers the progress of your student. Kentwood
will also be offering some afterschool tutoring opportunities beginning 2nd quarter for all students along
with some targeted math help for struggling 9th graders.
As the weather continues to get colder, we all are reminded to dress warmer and be familiar with all the
resources to monitor in case of school closure due to weather. The Public Schools Emergency
Communications System (PSECS) web site at http://www.schoolreport.org provides a report of school
schedule changes due to adverse weather conditions and other emergency situations for member school
districts, colleges, and private schools. You should also receive an auto-dialer call about any school
closure information if your contact information is up to date in our school data management system.
You can also stay tuned to all local news stations for up to the minute school closure reports.
With the onset of winter comes darkness. Students are reminded to be vigilant when walking to school
or bus stops in the dark. Dressing warm and wearing something reflective are two good ideas to help
ensure your students health and safety.
As we fast approach the holiday season, I am evermore thankful for being the Principal at Kentwood
High School. Please do not hesitate to stop me and say hi throughout the
year during our many outstanding school events. Have a safe and happy
holiday season!
Respectfully,
John Ray Kniseley II, Principal

Kentwood is gearing up for it’s 8th Annual Munch Madness school
wide canned food competition. Kentwood students have raised
over 168,000 in the past five years for local food banks. This
year we hope to raise 35,000 lbs. of food. If you want to help
contribute to our food drive, send canned food with your student anytime during the month of
November. Or, you can drop off the food directly at Kentwood’s main office. Even the smallest
contribution is greatly appreciated by us and by needy families in our community. Thank you!
Senior
Memory
Markers
Dear Seniors, Parents and Guardians:
Do you want a graduating senior to know that he or
she is special to you? A Memory Marker in the
Kentwood yearbook Tapestry is just the way to
express your feelings. It’s easy to do and the money
helps the yearbook staff put together the best annual
possible. NOTE: All messages and photos are
subject to editing. Please remember to make your
Memory Markers tasteful. All pictures will be
reviewed by the editorial staff. Those we can’t print
will be returned ASAP for you to substitute one that
will work. Please submit all Memory Markers IN
COLOR. Thank you!

MESSAGE FROM YOUR PTSA PRESIDENT
If you would like to reach out to Marysville Pilchuck High School, we are suggesting that you send red and white
paper hearts with messages from your students or yourself to express your love and sympathy. Red
and white are two of their school colors, and will hold special meaning. This will show that our
“hearts” are with Marysville Pilchuck.
Please put your "hearts" in the PTSA mailbox at Kentwood High School and I will forward them to the
appropriate place.

10 Myths About Joining the PTA
#1 Only moms and teachers need to join the PTA.
A strong PTA needs the support of parents, family members, teachers, school staff,
and community members. Anyone who cares about children belongs in the PTA!
#2 Joining the PTA means I have to volunteer.
The PTA appreciates everyone’s membership, whether or not a member volunteers.
You will not be sucked in to a black hole of volunteering!
#3 I have to be a board member or chair a committee to join the PTA.
You do not have to serve on the PTA Board or chair a committee to join the PTA.
Your beautiful smile and wonderful support will suffice!
#4 PTA membership never expires, I only have to join once.
Each new school year begins a new PTA membership year. Your PTA membership
will be good for the entire school year!
Clothing Bank
The clothing bank is in
need of your donations.
Many families are in
need of blankets, cold
weather gear for all ages
and sizes as well as new
socks and new underwear. Please consider
donating today at: Kent
Phoenix Academy Main
Office 11000 SE 264th St.
#5 I don’t have the time to join the PTA.
If you are unable to volunteer your time, please consider becoming a member of
the PTA and give your financial support. You will have the satisfaction of knowing
that your support helps fund events and activities for the children throughout the
school year!
#6 I’ll get roped into volunteering if I attend a PTA meeting.
There will be opportunities to get involved, but no pressure. Just pass along the
signup sheet if you are unable to participate. No judgment here!
#7 The PTA is only for stay-at-home parents with nothing else to do.
Your fellow PTA members are family and community members who want to support the kids and the school. Most members are juggling jobs, bills, household
chores, kids, sports, and homework, just like you!
#8 My child’s life will be the same whether or not I join the PTA.
Not only does membership put you in direct communication with other parents
and teachers, it shows you child that you are interested and invested in their educational experience.
#9 The PTA has all the help they need.
The PTA always wants and always needs volunteers! If you choose to volunteer,
you decide your time commitment!
#10 I have an idea but the PTA isn't interested.
New ideas are always welcome! It’s important to keep our PTA fresh and exciting!
You don’t have to be a member
to “like” us on Facebook!
