Love the Weak and Innocent!
By Rev. Richard Barker My dear parishioners, in the present age which idolizes individualism and self‐gra fica on, tradi onal Jewish wisdom oﬀers a lesson to our own households. This marvelous and unique lesson from the commentary of Jewish rabbis helps to correct our vision and enable us to see how we are personally responsible to God for cul va ng authen c peace (no ce the interdependency of peace and purity): IF PEOPLE fear to oﬀer cri cism lest it lead to a rupture of peace, that in itself proves that the peace is false. Peace, if it is to last, must be based on truth and lack of fear. WHOEVER CAN stop the members of his household from commi ng a sin, but does not, is held responsible for the sins of his household. If he can stop the people of his city from sinning, but does not, he is held responsible for the sins of the people of his city. IF HE can stop the whole world from sinning, and does not, he is held responsible for the sins of the whole world. [Babylonian Talmud, Shabbat 54b, 77] We, all, are shepherds caring for the flock entrusted to us by our Lord Jesus Christ. Unfortunately, however, many shepherds prey upon their sheep. Unsparing judgment will fall on those who torment the members of their own families, cooperate in acts of violence and aggression, vic mize the weak and impoverished, profane religion, and degrade the world in which they live. Here are the great evils—the great lies—of the present day: 1.) no human right is absolute, including the right to life, 2.) poli cians and judges can “create” rights, fabricate “truth” and do away with God‐given rights and truth as they see fit, 3.) the supreme human privilege is the power of one over another, especially the power of the few over the many, 4.) the weak and innocent are a threat to people with power, and 5.) power declines if it is not used aggressively and, conversely, power increases as its aggressive use increases. … (con nued on page 5) Thoughts on Communion

Praying the Our Father during Mass
One should not walk out of the Mass during the "Our Fa‐
ther" prayer. We call it the Lord's Prayer for good reason. It is the prayer that Jesus Christ himself gave to the Church to pray in his name. The "Our Father" prayer is the most per‐
fect and sublime expression of the very mind of God. The "Our Father" is the "pearl without price". It is the summit of the Church's prayer in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. To pray the “Our Father” prayer in the assembly of God's peo‐

If all this were not true, then man might have imagined things that God cannot do; he would have gone further than God in inven ons of love! That is impossible. Without the Holy Eucharist there would be no happiness in this world; life would be insupportable. When we receive Holy Commun‐
ion, we receive our joy and our happiness. The good God, wishing to give Himself to us in the Sacrament of His love, gave us a vast and great desire, which He alone can sa sfy. In the presence of this beau ful Sacrament, we are like a person dying of thirst by the side of a river ‐ he would only need to bend his head; like a person s ll remaining poor, close to a great treasure ‐ he need only stretch out his hand. He who communicates loses himself in God like a drop of water in the ocean. They can no more be separated. ... So if you were to keep Our Lord well and recollectedly, a er Communion, you would long feel that devouring fire which would inspire your heart with an inclina on to good and a repugnance to evil. When we have the good God in our heart, it ought to be very burning. The heart of the dis‐
ciples of Emmaus burnt within them from merely listening ‐4‐ to His voice. Dear St. Philip’s family, This Sunday is the Blessing of the Confirm‐
andi Sunday. Fr. Barker will oﬀer a special blessing for the faith journey our young church is taking to full communion with the Catholic Church at their Confirma on Mass. Confirma on reaﬃrms their bap smal promise and recognizes the Confirmand as an adult in the Catholic Church. This special blessing is oﬀered throughout the Catholic par‐
ishes to solidify and prepare the Confirmandi for their role as the future of the Mother Church. A er calling the fi een Confirmandi up to the Altar, Fr. Barker will ask the congrega‐
on to pray with him in oﬀering this blessing upon them. We oﬀer this blessing at the beginning of the faith journey as a united belief in their commitment to their faith. It is a beau ful way to show our love and belief in them. These fi een special young men and women are a deligh ul group. They are intelligent, kind, friendly and talented. We have a budding musician, an ar st and several athletes. They are ge ng to know each other and learning to bond as a group. We have public school, Catholic school and home‐
schooled students learning to work as a unit. It is a faith lesson for all involved. The teaching team is enjoying this diverse group of young adults. God will force the aggressor out of his own hiding place, and the predator like prey in the eye of the hawk will not see the hand of judgment fall: "For judgment is without mercy to one who has shown no mercy; yet mercy triumphs over judgment." [Jas 2:13] You say you have peace in your heart? The heart that is rec‐
onciled with God and man knows peace. You say you are reconciled with your God and your neighbor? Then love the weak and the innocent, and care for them as you would care for yourself. “And the King will answer (you), ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.’” [Mt 25:40] To love God and neighbor as the Spirit wills is the greatest sacrifice one can make in the name of divine goodness. Love must be planted and grown in the soil of humility: "A har‐
vest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace." [Jam 3:18] Peace and love therefore are insepara‐

When you receive Communion during the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, it is the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Christ that you are receiving. Holy Communion, in the Catholic Church, is reserved for those who have received the sacrament of First Holy Communion, have been catechized (taught) in our Catholic faith and have made a profession of faith. One should abstain from Holy Communion if they are in mortal sin and have not received the sacrament of reconcilia on. If you are not Roman Catholic or are in need
of the Sacrament of Reconcilia on, we ask that you refrain
from receiving Holy Communion in the Mass. However, you
may go up to one of the ministers for a blessing when Holy
Communion is being oﬀered. By crossing your hands over
your heart, the Priest or Eucharis c minister will know to give

Also, if you choose to receive only the Blessed Sacrament and not from the Chalice, it is fi ng nevertheless to pause for a moment to honor Christ’s presence in the Precious Blood—with an appropriate sign of devo on. We would not think to pass a friend on the street without some acknowledgement. Our Lord Jesus Christ deserves no less, and most assuredly, a great deal more.
