Term 4 Number 6 14th November 2014 Waverley From the Principal This week Sr Louise Hume, Caitlin Madiera, Mikaela Farrugia and I represented the College at the Liturgical Reception and Solemn Mass of Installation of The Most Reverend Anthony Fisher OP as Ninth Archbishop of Sydney. It was a very formal and magnificent occasion in every respect. The Principal’s Advisory Group met this week. The Advisory group is also the College Finance Committee. At the meeting we looked at the initial draft of the Budget for 2015 and the proposed fee structure for 2015. At the meeting, the fees for 2015 were approved. The Catholic Education Office determines the tuition fee and there has been an increase in these for 2015. There will be no increase to other fees and charges. A letter outlining this information will be sent to all families in the next two weeks. One of the recommendations from the cyclic review that is forming part of the Strategic Plan is to undertake Master Planning of the College Site. Ms Libby Denny, Principal of St Patrick’s Sutherland and formerly Principal of OLSH at Kensington spoke to the Advisory Group about the planning and recent building project at OLSH. Her insights will help us as we undertake the first steps in the process next year. I will be reporting further on this at the Parents’ Association Meeting on Tuesday 18th November. Students in Years 7 to 10 have been doing their yearly examinations this week. The results of these examinations form part of the students’ final assessment and grade. However they also provide training for the formal HSC Examinations. Next Friday we are celebrating the 141st Anniversary of the Poor Clare Sisters arrival in Waverley. Our celebrations include Mass at Mary Immaculate at 11.00am. All families are warmly invited to attend. After Mass, students will return to school for a barbecue lunch. Following lunch, there will be homeroom and students will be dismissed between 1.30 and 2.00pm. The St Clare’s College girls include: Karrie Doyle, Ariel Booth, Lucy Hopkins, Tess Terrerio, Tully Zimmerman, Emily Nicholson, Madeline Black and Yolande Miller. This initiative has been developed by the Catholic Education Office to provide more physical activity for our Year 4, 5 and 6 students in Primary Schools. The primary school involved include: • Galilee • St Margaret Mary’s • St Brigid’s • OLSH • St Anthonys • Holy Cross This program is a great mentoring program for our Year 9 and 10 students and local Catholic Primary Schools in the Eastern Suburbs. This program teaches our students responsibility, leadership development, physical activity, role modeling, and interschool dialogue and connections. As a College we are proud of these girls serving our regional school community program. These students are currently undertaking an elective subject at the College called Physical Activity and Sport Studies which helps foster these skills and enable them to participate and run events like this one. As a College we look forward to many more inter-school opportunities and to rewarding these students with a College Service Badge later in the year. Ashleigh Barker, Head of Co-Curricular Sport Sharing Technology News Dear Parents, This week I’d like to draw your attention to a recent high alert I received from the Government’s Stay Smart Online Safety Alert System about a scam email that is currently circulating. Be aware and don’t open attachments or links from unknown sources. This spam is an extremely dangerous one and can attempt to access banking information through malware or ransomware. If you think you may have already opened one of the emails or files take your computer to a professional to have it assessed. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions for weekly topics please contact me at [email protected]. au Anna-Louise Jones, Manager of Information Services Scam emails distributing malicious MS Office documents: Alert Priority High A scam email campaign is currently circulating that features attached Microsoft Office documents with malicious macros. Opening the attachment and enabling the macro could lead to ransomware or other banking malware being downloaded and launched on your computer. A macro is a small program or set of instructions which your computer can automatically execute. Macros are a built in feature of Microsoft Office, used to help automate simple or repetitive tasks. They have also been used by scammers for many years. They are disabled by default in Microsoft Office as a security precaution. The circulating scam emails vary widely, current examples refer to financial themes such as outstanding invoices, bills or credit card charges from organisations such as Amazon or PayPal, but most are from lesser known organisation. The email asks you to refer to an attached document for more detail. For the malicious macro to run, you need to open the document and enable the macro. Enabling unknown macros to run on your computer is extremely dangerous as you do not know what actions it will perform. The wording of the attached document seeks to trick you into enabling the macro. Examples vary; some may notify you that you have an outdated version of Word, others more simply state you need to enable macros to view the content. Do not click Enable Content or enable macros An example of the Word document. Do not enable the macro. Year 9 Camp Other Office documents such as Excel or PowerPoint may also be used.
