THE SCHOOL TEACHER'S PAY AND CONDITIONS DOCUMENT [PART XI] SETS OUT THE STATUTORY
RESPONSIBILITIES OF ALL STAFF. THIS JOB DESCRIPTION COMPLEMENTS THAT DOCUMENT AND
PROVIDES THE SPECIFIC CONTEXT FOR THE POST OF TEACHER RESPONSIBLE FOR A CURRICULUM
AREA. THE POSTHOLDER WILL BE EXPECTED TO UNDERTAKE DUTIES IN LINE WITH THE
PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS FOR QUALIFIED TEACHERS AND UPHOLD THE PROFESSIONAL CODE
OF THE GENERAL TEACHING COUNCIL FOR ENGLAND.

1. To support the HoD’s vision of the subject in line with the School’s ethos and
vision.
2. To support the drive for raising standards of student attainment and achievement
within the whole school and the subject.
3. To support the HoD in their role of leading, managing and developing the subject.
4. To support the developing and enhancing of teaching practices of others through
mentoring and coaching.
5. To assist the HoD develop a variety of learning strategies and appropriate student
groupings across the subject to ensure access for all.
6. To make best use of teaching and support staff, financial and physical resources
within the subject to meet the needs of students and help deliver the school
improvement plan.
7. To help the HoD be accountable for effectively monitoring student progress and
achievement.
8. Develop Behaviour for Learning and support colleagues in the implementation of
the School Behaviour Policy.
9. To contribute to CPD across the school.
10. To help to ensure that all school policies are effectively implemented within the
subject.

1. To keep up to date with national developments in the subject area and teaching
practice and methodology.
2. Monitor and respond to curriculum development and initiatives at national,
regional and local levels.
1. Where appropriate to be responsible for the efficient and effective deployment of
the subject’s support staff.
2. To promote effective teamwork and to motivate staff to ensure effective working
relations.
1. To contribute to the process of target setting within the subject, in line with whole
school procedures, and to work towards achievement of these targets.
2. Help to establish common standards of practice within the subject and develop
the effectiveness of teaching and learning styles across the whole curriculum
area.
3. To contribute to the school procedures for lesson observations/audits of student
work.
4. To monitor and evaluate the subject in line with agreed procedures, including
evaluation against quality standards and performance criteria.
5. To ensure quality procedures meet the requirements of Self Evaluation.
6. To actively challenge and seek out and implement modifications and
improvements where required.
1. To ensure the maintenance of accurate and up-to-date information concerning the
subject on management information systems.
2. To make use of the analysis and evaluate performance data provided.
3. To identify and take appropriate action on issues arising from data, systems and
reports, setting deadlines where necessary and reviewing progress on the action
taken.
4. To produce reports within the quality assurance cycle for the subject

Communications:
1. To ensure effective communication and consultation as appropriate with the
parents/carers of students.
2. To liaise with relevant external bodies e.g. higher education, industry,
examination boards, awarding bodies, etc.
3. To communicate effectively with colleagues from other curriculum areas.
4. Promote the subject through support with the organisation of transition activities.
Marketing and
1. To lead the development of effective subject links with other schools and the

promotion of the curriculum at Open Days/Evenings and other events.

1. To work with the HoD to manage the available space, staff, money and equipment

deploying the curriculum area budget, requisitioning, organising and maintaining
equipment and stock and keeping appropriate records.
2. To work with the HoD to ensure that teaching commitments are effectively and
efficiently time-tabled and roomed.

1. To monitor and support the progress and development of students within the
subject.
2. To monitor student attendance together with students’ progress and performance
in relation to targets set for each individual; ensuring that follow-up procedures
are adhered to and that appropriate action is taken where necessary.
3. To act as a coach and/or mentor and to carry out the duties associated with that
role.
Teaching:
1. To undertake an appropriate programme of teaching.

1. To play a full part in the life of the school community, to support its distinctive
mission and ethos and to encourage and ensure staff and students to follow this
example.
