Purpose:
Shuttleworth College
Head of Faculty – English/Mathematics
To undertake the duties of a teacher as outlined in the teacher’s job
description and the STPCD. In addition:
 To raise standards of student attainment and achievement within the
Faculty area and to monitor and support student progress.
 To develop and enhance the teaching practice of others.
 To ensure the provision of an appropriately broad, balanced, relevant
and differentiated curriculum for students studying in the Faculty, in
accordance with the aims of the College and the curricular policies
determined by the Governing Body and Headteacher of the College.
 To identify and act on relevant priorities in line with the College
improvement plan.
 To be accountable to Governors/Headteacher in relation to the
performance of the Faculty in external examinations and its
performance in line with national standards.
 To effectively manage and deploy teaching/support staff, financial and
physical resources within the faculty to support the designated
curriculum portfolio.
Reporting to:
Line Manager as designated by the Headteacher.
Line management meetings will take place at least fortnightly.
Responsible for:
To line manage those staff in the Faculty holding a TLR, and be responsible
for teaching staff and other relevant personnel within the Faculty.
Liaising with:
Headteacher, SLT, other Heads of Faculty and relevant staff with crossCollege responsibilities, relevant support staff, LA staff, parents.
Salary/Grade:
Teacher pay spine + TLR 1.4 as laid out in the College pay policy.
Faculty Vision and
Strategy:











Lead, motivate and support all colleagues within the Faculty.
To lead the development of appropriate syllabus, resources, schemes of
work, marking policies, assessment and teaching and learning strategies
in the Faculty.
The day-to-day management, control and operation of course provision
within the Faculty, including effective deployment of staff and physical
resources.
To actively monitor and follow up student progress and intervene where
appropriate.
To implement College Policies and Procedures.
Develop Faculty vision in line with whole College priorities.
To ensure excellent behaviour for learning across the Faculty and take
action as appropriate in line with College behaviour policy.
Lead, co-ordinate and monitor Faculty development linking Faculty
priorities to whole college priorities.
To ensure that the work in the Faculty area fully reflects the College’s
distinctive ethos and vision.
In conjunction with the relevant staff to foster and oversee the application
of technologies.
To ensure that Health and Safety policies and practices, including Risk
Assessments, throughout the Faculty are in-line with national
requirements and are updated where necessary, therefore liaising with
the College's Health and Safety Officer.

To lead innovation in learning and curriculum development in the
Faculty.
To keep up to date with national developments in the subject areas
and teaching practice and methodology.
To work with members of the SLT to ensure that staff development
needs are identified via appraisal, quality assurance and faculty
development planning.
Work with relevant SLT and other colleagues to provide the
appropriate support and training to all members of the Faculty.
Undertake rigorous and effective performance appraisal in line with
College policy.
To be responsible for the efficient and effective deployment of the
Faculty's technicians/support staff where appropriate.
To make appropriate arrangements for classes when staff are
absent, ensuring appropriate cover within the Faculty liaising with the
Cover Supervisor/relevant staff.
To participate in the interview process for teaching posts when
required and to ensure effective induction of new staff in line with
College procedures.
To promote teamwork and to motivate staff to ensure effective
working relations.
To be responsible for the day-to-day management of staff within the
designated Faculty and act as a positive role model.
Provide regular opportunities for less experienced teachers to see
you teach.
To ensure the maintenance of accurate and up-to-date information
concerning the Faculty on the information management system.
To make use of analysis and evaluate performance data provided.
To produce reports within the quality assurance cycle for the Faculty.
To produce reports on examination performance.
In conjunction with the relevant Senior Leader, to manage the
Faculty's collection of data.
To provide the Governing Body with relevant information relating to
the Faculty performance and development.
To ensure that all members of the Faculty are familiar with its aims
and objectives.
To ensure effective communication/consultation as appropriate with
the parents of students.
To attend appropriate meetings.
To represent the Faculty’s views and interests.
Be an agent for change, implementing whole College initiatives which
support the raising of student attainment and achievement
Maintain a central record of subject assessment data and targets to
monitor the progress of students and the effectiveness of the team.
Lead rigorous and effective Faculty team meetings – identify the
purpose, circulate an agenda and minutes.
Following each reporting cycle, check the standards of teachers’
data, review assessment data and co-ordinate follow-up across the
subject in line with the data and report checking guidelines.
Undertake rigorous and effective faculty self-evaluation with a
planned cycle of regular observation/feedback to colleagues, book
scrutiny and interviews with students, in line with the college selfevaluation process as policy.
Update the faculty/subject self-evaluation information on a termly
basis, contributing to the whole school self-evaluation process as
required.
Lead, co-ordinate and monitor the Faculty Development Plan, linking
subject priorities to whole College priorities.






To establish common standards of practice within the Faculty and
develop the effectiveness of teaching and learning styles in all areas
of the Faculty.
To contribute to the College procedures for lesson observation.
To implement College quality assurance procedures and to ensure
adherence to those within the Faculty.
To monitor and evaluate the Faculty area/subjects in line with agreed
College procedures including evaluation against quality standards
and performance criteria.
To seek/implement modification and improvement where required.
To contribute to the publicity and marketing activities, e.g. the
collection of material for press releases, newsletters and other
communications.
To lead the development of effective subject links with partner
schools and the community, attendance where necessary at liaison
events in partner colleges and the effective promotion of subjects at
open days/evenings and other events.
To actively promote the development of effective subject links with
external agencies.
Ensure all relevant Faculty information is available on the College
Website and shows the Faculty in the best possible light.
To manage the available resources of space, staff, money and
equipment efficiently within the limits, guidelines and procedures laid
down; including deploying the subject budget, acting as a cost centre
holder, requisitioning, organising and maintaining equipment and
stock, and keeping appropriate records.
To work with the Deputy Headteacher in order to ensure that the
Faculty's teaching commitments are effectively and efficiently
timetabled and roomed.
To monitor and support the overall progress and development of
students within the Faculty.
To act as a Form Tutor and to carry out the duties associated with
that role as outlined in the generic job description if required.
To take a lead role in the college’s behaviour management system
including active participation in the on-call system/Behaviour for
Learning Strategy if required.
To ensure excellent behaviour for learning across the Faculty and
take action as appropriate in line with College behaviour policy.
Teaching:

To undertake an appropriate programme of teaching in accordance
with the duties of a main scale teacher.

To play a full part in the life of the College community, to support its
distinctive mission and ethos and to encourage and ensure staff and
students to follow this example.
Supervision

The majority of this work will be undertaken entirely without
supervision. Matters of policy are discussed as the need arises with
the line manager.


