REFLECTION
When one finds a worthy wife, her
value is far beyond pearls.
(Proverbs 31:10)
In 1843, American author Nathaniel Hawthorne
published a short story called “The Birthmark.” The
story focuses on a beautiful woman, Georgiana,
who has one flaw: a birthmark on her face. Her
husband, Aylmer, is a scientist who wants
Georgiana to be perfect. So he concocts a potion to
remove the birthmark. Unsure but wanting to please
her husband, Georgiana drinks the potion. The
birthmark slowly fades, but as it does, so does
Georgiana. In the end, she dies, leaving a flawless
corpse.
How often do we act like Aylmer the scientist?
How often do we nitpick at our spouses instead of
praising them for all the ways they bring us joy,
hold our families together, and support us in our
lives of faith?
Today’s first reading describes the characteristics
of an honorable wife. She brings her husband good,
and she devotes herself untiringly to her family. She
is diligent in running her household, she reaches out
to the poor, she sacrifices much for her family, and
most of all, she fears the Lord and follows his
commands.
Scholars think that readings like this one were
used as models to teach young Jewish women, like
the Virgin Mary. It’s no wonder why! This
description of an industrious, prayerful woman has
much to teach us—men and women alike—about
how to arrange our days. It depicts a home life that
is wholesome and fruitful. It depicts a home where
spouses honor each other and where children learn
the values of faith, hard work, and mutual respect.
Of course, no home is as flawless as the home
depicted in this reading. We are, after all, fallible
human beings! But that doesn’t mean we cannot all
aspire to this perfect ideal. Just remember Aylmer:
be sure not to kill each other in the process!

Needed for Our Veterans at Castle Point
The St. Martin de Porres Knights of Columbus
and Senior Center will be collecting toiletries to
be donated to Castle Point Veterans Hospital

Knights of Columbus Council 7551 invite you
to Give the Gift of Life in this season of Thanksgiving at their
semiannual BLOOD DRIVE. The Red Cross does not need
blood – patients do. Every two seconds someone in America
gets a blood transfusion. Five million patients will need blood
this year. Thank You for support of our programs.

FOOD FOR THE POOR
As we look forward to our Christmas Season, the
people of the community are in need of
foodstuffs. As we have done in past years, we are
looking for non-perishable foods as well as frozen turkeys and
hams. We will be delivering the food to the Franciscan
Handmaids in New York on Tuesday, December 16th, so if
you can deliver the turkeys and hams to the rectory during
regular business hours before December 12th we would
greatly appreciate it. All other foods can be left in the back of
the Church. Thank you for your continued support in this
matter as well as in your support of the poor of Poughkeepsie.

K of C Food Drive
The monthly Knights of Columbus Food Drive will
be held on Sunday, November 23 in order to
provide families with food for Thanksgiving. Food
can be left in the lobby of the Church, money donations are
used to purchase gift cards from the PSA to purchase food.

St. Martin’s Choir Sings at Mariapolis Luminosa
Each Christmas, throughout the month of
December, Mariapolis Luminosa displays
over 200 Nativity scenes from every
continent in the world. People come from
near & far to visit this beautiful event. This year St. Martin de
Porres’ parish choir is invited to make the 2014 Nativity Scene
Display even more special by performing a medley of Advent
and Christmas Carols on Sunday, December 14 from 1:303:00 pm. Mariapolis Luminosa is located at 200 Cardinal Rd.
Hyde Park, NY 12538. The display runs from December 1-30,
2014, Sat-Sun 1:00pm-5:00pm, Mon-Fri 2:00pm-5:00pm.

Nightfever NYC is coming back to St. Patrick’s Cathedral
November 21, 2014. During the month of All
Souls, Saint Patrick’s Cathedral (50th Street
and 5th Avenue) will be hosting this Nightfever
so that we will have the opportunity to pray
before the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament as well as light
candles to honor our Lord. The evening of music & prayer
will start at 7pm & end at 9pm. Confessions will be heard
throughout the night. Come and be a part of this night, where
the Cathedral will have its doors open to all New Yorkers so

Bringing the Christmas Spirit to Families in Need
Catholic Charities Community Services of
Dutchess County serves many of the families
throughout the county who are in need. We are
inviting you to “adopt” a family or individual and provide
them with some basic Christmas gifts for their family that they

Visit from Santa
Santa will be visiting St. Martin’s
on Sunday, December 7, from
10:30 am until 11:30am during the
Parish Coffee. The children will all
have a chance to visit with Santa and
enjoy making crafts while their parents
enjoy some treats. The Health Care Ministry will also be on
hand for blood pressure screenings. So mark your calendar &
