RECTORY OFFICE HOURS: Monday—Friday 9:30 AM—3:30 PM
JANUARY 11, 2015, THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD
You are my beloved Son;
with you I am well pleased.
(Mark 1:11)
“He wants to be the bride
at every wedding, the corpse
at every funeral, and the baby
at every christening.”
Ironically, the subject of this
cynical remark was a world
leader. Even though he often commanded center
stage, he still craved attention. Deep down, most
people do. To varying degrees, we’re like those
little kids who want someone to notice and affirm
us: “Watch me jump! Look at this trick! See what I
can do!”
Today’s celebration conveys a message about this
human craving. In fact, you might call the Baptism
of the Lord the “Feast of Full Attention.” The
spotlight is on Jesus, who comes to John as just
another penitent in the crowd. Then suddenly, he is
singled out as uniquely cherished: the heavens are
torn apart, the Spirit descends, and the Father’s
voice declares him “my beloved Son.” What a
stunning affirmation of Jesus’ importance!
But here’s something just as stunning: the
Sacrament of Baptism brings us right into Jesus’
own relationship with the Father! You don’t have to
strive for attention, wonder who you are, or
question whether your life matters. If you’ve been
baptized into Christ, what the Father spoke to Jesus,
he speaks to you: “You are my beloved son. You
are my beloved daughter.” Yes, you need to be
transformed into the likeness of Christ. And yes,
that takes time. But as you make that journey, you
can rest secure that you are already God’s beloved
child. Everything flows from that.
Today, as the Christmas season comes to a close,
why not give one last gift? Offer God your full
attention, as you reflect on your baptism. Let him
reveal you to yourself and show you how greatly
you are loved. As you give God your full attention,
you will discover how much you have his.
“Abba! Father! Thank you that I am your beloved
child.”

ECUMENISM: WEEK OF PRAYER 2015
In 1907, Graymoor friar, Paul A. Watson, an early pioneer in
the ecumenical movement in the U.S., laid the foundation for
the annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, January 18-25.
This year's theme, "Jesus said to her, 'Give me a drink' (John
4:7),” was chosen and developed by the Christians of Brazil.
Although our local observance will not take place until
Pentecost Sunday, at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, in
Poughkeepsie, you are invited this month to join Christians
around the world in our prayer for unity, even as we rejoice in
the rich diversity of the global Christian community.

Reach Christ!
Greetings fellow parishioners and friends! We are
writing to you on behalf of our parish youth group,
Reach Christ. Over the past year, with your prayers
and support, Reach Christ has been able to minister
to many youth within our parish and to the greater community. We are striving to
draw our teens into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ through our meetings,
service projects, and social events. In an attempt to continue this fruitful endeavor
we are planning a great event for July 2015!
From the 16th – 25th of July 2015, 30-35 teens and parents from Reach Christ will
be walking El Camino de Santiago (the Way of St. James). It is a 490mi walking
pilgrimage across the north coast of Spain to Santiago de Compostela.
We will be walking the last 80mi, from Sarria, Spain to Santiago de Compostela
and the Shrine of St. James the Apostle. Tradition teaches us that this is the final
resting place of the relics of St. James the Apostle, which are interred in the
Cathedral Shrine. Countless pilgrims have made this walk for almost 1000 years!
So, why will Reach Christ do it? We will make this pilgrimage for a number of
reasons. We will follow in the footsteps of the many pilgrims who, through this
walk, strengthened their relationship with the Lord. We will show our teens the
great depth and universality of our Catholic Faith. We will walk in prayer for all of
you and bring your intentions to the tomb of the Apostle James.
In humble prayer and petition we ask for your prayers and, if your means allow,
your financial support. We are asking for sponsors to help our teens meet the cost of
this endeavor. If you are interested, please pray over the possibility of helping us at
the level of Bronze Sponsor - $100+ , Silver Sponsor - $250+ , or Gold Sponsor
- $500+ Most of all, however, we ask for your prayerful support, without which this
endeavor would be fruitless. All teens from the parish are welcome to join us! For
further information or for questions about sponsoring a teen, please contact Fr.
Dan at the Rectory (845-473-4222).
Please be assured of our continuing prayers for you, your
families, and the wonderful people here at St. Martin’s.
St. Martin de Porres & St. James the Apostle,

Thank You!!
We want to express our sincere thanks to everyone who participated in the Sharing Tree program. Once again
this year, this little church in this little town did something extraordinary.
Special thanks to our wonderful friends, Ethel Tierney & Mae Stringer who, for so many years, have opened
their home to us so that we could sort and store gifts. Thank You, ladies!
We thank Msgr. Sullivan, Fr. Abraham, Fr. Dan, Kathleen & Patti in the rectory for your support, patience &
help.
A VERY special thanks to the CCD staff, Janet, Ellen & Mae. We could not have done this without you!
We also need to thank Elaine & Bill Shelah, Pam & Steve Bartlett, Mary Brooks, Judy & John Marcus, Mike &
Maureen (Our Chairperson for the past 20 years) Schade, Joe & Joan Cooper, Joyce Flanagan, Anne Selino,
Sophia Sciacca, Carol & Ken Neisser, Anne Marie Teeling, Barbara Zuccarello. Marilyn O’Connor, Kyle
Bernard, Kaitlyn Bernard, Shane Mulcahy, Peggy, John & Steven Latino, Mike Hynes, Jim & Mary Kay
McPhee, Bill Kennedy & all of the people, too many to name here, who helped carry, sort and deliver gifts.
Everyone from teens to our Knights of Columbus helped in so many ways!
Our greatest Thank You of course goes to our wonderful parishioners. You brought joy to our 21 families. You
turned a time of stress into a time of hope. The hundreds of dollars in gift cards that you donated will sustain
them into the New Year. There were also lots of gifts under their trees! You brought warmth and entertainment
to our neighbors at the Lutheran Care Center, gave support to struggling moms & their babies, sent Christmas
fun to so many children at the Poughkeepsie Children's Home & to the Handmaids of Mary in Harlem. This
parish is extraordinary! We are overwhelmed every year by your generosity. We wish you all a very Merry
Christmas & a Joyful New Year!!
