The Lord … will establish a
house for you. (2 Samuel 7:11)
Imagine David’s surprise when
God denied his request to build a
temple but promised instead to
build a house for David—a royal dynasty that
would never end!
Like David, we often think that human hands can
build a house for God. We think if we spend enough
time accomplishing tasks in our churches or doing
enough charitable works, we can establish His
kingdom on earth. We tend to forget that the
Christian life has just as much to do with humbly
receiving unmerited grace from a powerful and
generous God. We tend to forget God’s greatest
desire—to build his personality, his priorities, and
his passions within us.
There is a wonderful story about the late
Vietnamese cardinal Nguyen Van Thuan who,
while still a young bishop, was arrested and
imprisoned by his government. Van Thuan was so
devastated at not being able to complete the projects
that he had started for God that he went nights
without sleeping. Then one night he heard a voice
saying, “Everything you have done and desire to
continue doing … are God’s works, but they are not
God. Choose God and not the works of God.”
These words changed Van Thuan’s whole way of
thinking. He found a new peace and strength to
surmount moments in prison that were almost
unbearable.
In his book, Testimony of Hope, Cardinal Van
Thuan referred to Mary as a prime example of
choosing God and not the works of God. “She
abandoned her projects without fully understanding
the mystery that was being accomplished in her
body and in her destiny.” By her fiat, Mary allowed
God to build within her a house for Jesus Christ, the
King of kings and Lord of lords. May we follow her
example and let God build his house within and
among us.

within me, so that I may give you glory.”

Sacraments to the Homebound
Homebound parishioners who may be,
temporarily, unable to participate, in the Parish
liturgical celebrations, due to illness or hospital
recuperation, please call the rectory to schedule
a visit by a priest /Deacon during this Christmas Season. The
Sacrament of the anointing of the Sick or Confession can be
arranged at home at your convenience. “When there are
people sick among you, let them send for the priests...” (from
the ritual for anointing the Sick).
A Healing Mass,
With a free flow of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, will
be held January 6 at St. Kateri Tekakwitha Parish,
1925 Rte. 82 LaGrangeville. Guest Celebrant will be Fr. Tom
Kreiser from Yorktown. Fr. Tom celebrated the first Healing
Mass for the Spirit Wind Ministry. Praise & Worship at 7pm;
Mass at 7:30. Individual prayers for healing follows Mass
which is sponsored by Spirit Wind Prayer Group. Details

ECUMENISM: THE IRREVERSIBLE QUEST FOR UNITY
In his remarks to Pope Francis on November 30,
2014, in Istanbul, Turkey, Ecumenical Patriarch
Bartholomew offered a resounding declaration of
his sure hope for the full unity between the
Churches of East and West: "As a result of their meeting ...
fifty years ago [Pope Paul VI and Patriarch Athenogoras, in
Jerusalem], the flow of history has literally changed direction:
the parallel and occasionally conflicting journeys of our
Churches have coincided in the common vision of restoring
our lost unity; the cold love between us has been rekindled,
while our desire to do everything in our capacity so that our
communion in the same faith and the same chalice may once
again emerge has been galvanized. Thenceforth, the road to
Emmaus has opened up before us - a road that, while perhaps
lengthy and sometimes even rugged, is nonetheless
irreversible - with the Lord as our companion, until he is
revealed to us 'in the breaking of bread' (Luke 24:35)."

K of C Free Throw Competition
The Knights of Columbus, council #7551,
is sponsoring a free throw competition for
boys and girls from ages 9-14 (age as
of 1/1/2015). The event will take place
on Monday, January 19, 2015 in the St.
Martin de Porres school
gym. Registration will be from 6:30 to 7:00 PM and the
competition will run from 7:00 to 8:30 PM. Please bring
proof of age to registration. The winning boy and girl, from
each age group, will receive a basketball and earn the chance
to compete in the District competition. If you have any
