REFLECTION
If he cries out to me, I will hear
him; for I am compassionate.
(Exodus 22:26)
Do you have children? If so,
you’ve probably thought about what
you would do if one of them fell on hard times.
Maybe you’ve found yourself in this position
already! You’d do everything you could to help,
wouldn’t you? Even if the hardship is your child’s
own doing, you would still want to bend over
backwards to help out.
That’s the message behind today’s first reading
and Gospel reading. They both tell us that every
human being is a member of God’s family. We are
all beloved of our Father, and we are all brothers
and sisters to each other. It doesn’t matter whether
we are well behaved or “black sheep” of his family.
He loves us deeply and longs to care for us, simply
because we are his. This is why he has a special
love for the poor. It breaks his heart to see these
children of his go without the basic necessities of
food, clothing, and shelter.
Jesus tells us that the two greatest commandments
are to love God with all our hearts and to love one
another as ourselves. These are very challenging
commands, precisely because they are so
encompassing. He didn’t say, “Love God when it’s
convenient” or “Love only the people who agree
with you.” No, we are all one family: rich or poor,
old or young, educated or illiterate, Christian,
Muslim, Jewish, or atheist. Whoever we are,
whatever we did or didn’t do, even whether or not
we believe in God, everyone deserves to be treated
with equal dignity. Everyone deserves to be cared
for and lifted up out of any poverty that holds them
bound.
Jesus didn’t discriminate in his offer of healing
and restoration. Like the farmer who sowed his
seeds on all types of soil, he wants us to do the
same.
“Jesus, I praise you for your generosity. Give me
the same concern for the poor and needy around
me. Lord, help me to open my heart and my hands
to them!”

FILM NITE Presents
The Scarlet and the Black
(1983), Jerry London
The Scarlet and the Black tells the
true story of a Holy Office notary who, during
Nazi occupation of Rome, covertly ran an
underground railroad for Jews, anti-Fascists, and
escaped Allied POWs. Riveting & edifying, this WWII drama
stars Gregory Peck as Msgr. Hugh O’Flaherty, a plainspeaking, straight-dealing Irish priest who boldly aids enemies
of the Third Reich under the watchful eye of Christopher
Plummer’s Nazi Lt. Col. Herbert Kappler. Their cat-andmouse game is thrilling and great fun, and culminates in a
startling showdown in a very significant setting. John Gielgud
plays Pius XII, who is depicted sympathetically & is shown to
be willing to stand up to the Nazis. The Pope preserves what
politicians call "deniability" by not permitting himself to know
much about what O'Flaherty is doing. Though he warns that
he will not be able to protect him when the Germans come, the
Pope refuses to turn him over to them. The British emissary
says that he cannot help, even though the men are his own
soldiers, explaining that "My strictest duty is to do nothing
which might compromise the neutrality of the Vatican State or
His Holiness the Pope." His aide, however, is one of the most
important participants in O'Flaherty's efforts. This is an
outstanding story of true personal moral courage and
redemption, with a conclusion that is deeply moving. Run
time: 143 minutes November 6, 7.00 PM: Nativity center.
Flocknote’s
A new, simple way for our parish & the
Archdiocese to communicate more effectively with
you. The Archdiocese has provided us this tool in order to
better equip our parish, especially as we prepare for the
forthcoming announcement of our pastoral planning process,
“Making All Things New.” It is more important than ever for
the parish to be able to get important updates to you in a
timely fashion, while also getting feedback from you. This is
all totally free for you to use and it's going to also make it easy
for you to stay plugged in to the parish ministries or groups
that you care about via text message or email updates. Your
information will be completely safe and secure. And you can
unsubscribe from any updates at any time! Flocknote is very
simple. Just text Martin to 84576. Once you send that in,
Flocknote will send you back a confirmation message and
another message asking you to click a link to complete the
process. Or simply go to flocknote.com/smdppough to sign
up. The Archdiocese and Cardinal Dolan will also be able to
send you periodic updates, but they will only use this for
important announcements. This is a great opportunity for you
to get plugged into parish & Archdiocese happenings.

Reach Christ!
Greetings fellow parishioners and friends! We are
writing to you on behalf of our parish youth group,
Reach Christ. Over the past year, with your prayers and
support, Reach Christ has been able to minister to many
youth within our parish and to the greater community.
We are striving to draw our teens into a deeper
relationship with Jesus Christ through our meetings,
service projects, and social events. In an attempt to
continue this fruitful endeavor we are planning a great
event for July 2015!
From the 16th – 25th of July 2015, 30-35 teens and
parents from Reach Christ will be walking El Camino de
Santiago (the Way of St. James). It is a 490mi walking
pilgrimage across the north coast of Spain to Santiago de
Compostela.
We will be walking the last 80mi, from Sarria, Spain
to Santiago de Compostela and the Shrine of St. James
the Apostle. Tradition teaches us that this is the final
resting place of the relics of St. James the Apostle,
which are interred in the Cathedral Shrine. Countless
pilgrims have made this walk for almost 1000 years! So,
why will Reach Christ do it? We will make this
pilgrimage for a number of reasons. We will follow in
the footsteps of the many pilgrims who, through this
walk, strengthened their relationship with the Lord. We
will show our teens the great depth and universality of
our Catholic Faith. We will walk in prayer for all of you
and bring your intentions to the tomb of the Apostle
James.
In humble prayer and petition we ask for your prayers
and, if your means allow, your financial support. We are
asking for sponsors to help our teens meet the cost of
this endeavor. If you are interested, please pray over the
possibility of helping us at the level of Bronze Sponsor
- $100+ , Silver Sponsor - $250+ , or Gold Sponsor $500+ Most of all, however, we ask for your prayerful
support. Without which this endeavor would be fruitless.
All teens from the parish are welcome to join us! For
further information or for questions about sponsoring a
teen, please contact Fr. Dan at the Rectory (845-4734222).
Please be assured of our continuing prayers for you,
your families, and the wonderful people here at St.
Martin’s. St. Martin de Porres and St. James the Apostle,
Pray for Us!
