Elgin National Watch Factory

Presented by Jerry Turnquist of the Elgin Historical Society
Founded during the Civil War, the Elgin National Watch Company was the world's
largest watch factory, producing over 60 million “Elgin” watches before the factory
was demolished in 1966. Join us for the story of this amazing factory, including how
it got started, its rise to fame, its shift to war time production during WWII and how it
became part of the social fabric of Elgin and the surrounding communities. The
presenter, Jerry Turnquist, is a 5th generation Elginite and is a long-time member
of the Elgin Area Historical Society. He has been writing a Daily Herald column
on Elgin area history for the past 19 years. Co-sponsored by the Bartlett Historical

you how to access the World Book Online Reference Center.

Drop by the Youth & Teen Services Department for an
introduction to database resources including the
World Book Online Reference Center and other
E-Sources that will help with research and homework
assignments. These E-Sources can be accessed from
home at any time using your Library card. Features
include fully illustrated in-depth articles, quizzes,
activities, maps and multi-media on the world. We

Library Closings
The Library will close at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 26 and remain closed on Thursday, Nov. 27.
The Library will also be closed on Dec. 24, 25, 31 and Jan. 1, 2015. Though we close for major
holidays, be assured that no Library material is due when the Library is closed. Library closings
are also “no fine” days.
24/7 Access on our website
Even when the Library building is closed, you still have access to online services on our website
www.bartlettlibrary.org. Access your account, renew and reserve items and view the Library's
catalog. Online registration is now available for most programs. Bartlett Public Library District
cardholders can also access the Library's online Research E-Sources which are filled with
information on many topics. Download audiobooks and eBooks from the Library's eMedia collection
using OverDrive, download free music from Freegal and download magazines from Zinio. Our virtual
Library never closes!
