Thanksgiving week is here. This is our week for turkeys basting in seas of gravy, smells of garlic mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, and pumpkin pie filling the air as family and friends come together and create lasting memories. It is during this time of year that we stop to give thanks for our many blessings. I am reminded each day of the amazing opportunities offered to our children here at Deer Canyon. Your generosity and care allow our students to come to school every day warm, loved and ready to learn. Your continued financial support further provides enrichment opportunities unique to our magnificent school. The Science Program is a model for our district and envied by so many. Our PE program fosters health and well being while developing athletic abilities and gross motor skills. Our classrooms are stocked with supplies to support learning because of your generous support. For all that you do, volunteering in and out of our classrooms, supporting our educational program, caring for your children, THANK YOU! I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday and vacation week. We look forward to seeing you back at school on Monday, December 1! PTA is happy to once again coordinate Deer Canyon’s participation in our community’s Adopt-a-Family program, which benefits needy families from our own school district. To contribute, just follow these simple steps: 1. Select a tag from the “Giving Tree”located in the school’s front courtyard by the office. 2. Purchase the gift card indicated in the tag or let us handle the purchase on your behalf through the Scrip program. 3. Drop off the Giving Tree tag and gift card by Wednesday, December 11th, or check made out to “Deer Canyon PTA”” if purchasing through the Scrip program at the office by Friday, December 5th. Our school has always been incredibly generous with their gifts, and we thank you in advance for your continuing generosity as we sponsor new families this holiday season. If you have any questions, please contact me at [email protected]. Echoes ~ Page 2 November 21, 2014 Wow, what a busy fall! In the spirit of giving Thanks, I would like to thank the following people for their hard work and countless hours coordinating and implementing our long list of programs and events: Denise Bryan – Thank you for coordinating our ongoing Membership Drive and taking on the sometimes difficult task of implementing a brand new online PTA Registration System on short notice! Bunny Shin – Thank you for coordinating School Picture Day and taking so many wonderful photos of all of our events. Renee Tang – A huge thank you to Renee for coordinating our Gift Wrap fundraiser, our largest source of PTA income, despite not evening having a child at the school anymore! You went above and beyond the call of duty. Germania Davis – Thank you for collecting, counting and submitting the thousands of Box Tops that families donate each fall. It is a tedious, but important job. Helen Miyaki, Kristen Reed and Leslie Smith – Thank you for pulling together another rockin’ Monster Mash. I think the parents look forward to it just as much as the kids do! Leslie Smith and Jenn Madigan – Thank you for organizing and coordinating our DC Kids program this year and helping them come up with great community service projects. Song Zhang – Thank you for organizing our popular Reflections Art Program once again this year. I know it is a lot of work in a short period of time. Emily Xu – Thank you for once again pulling together our annual School Directory. I know this is not an easy task and we appreciate the many hours you spend on it. Erin Mitchell and Beth Huppert – Thank you for developing the Character Corps curriculum and for coordinating the parent volunteers. And thank you to the parent volunteers (Gary Bibler, Dennis Panganiban, Melissa Christopher, Valerie Azcona, Qi Yan, Erin Mitchell, Sally Maaz, Erin Cole, Gina Mell, Elena Villalva, Larisa Wilmert and myself) who take time out of their busy lives to go into the classroom once a month to teach the lesson. Emily Comstock – Thank you, Emily, and all of the Room Parents, for volunteering to help make our children’s classroom celebrations so tasty and fun. Mercedes Delgado – Thank you for coordinating our Adopt-a-Family program again this year and for coming up with a new “tree” for the gift tags. Michelle Nisly – Thank you for all of your late night hours pulling together this amazing newsletter each and every week without fail. I know firsthand how many hours this involves. Thank you, as well, to all of the PTA Board Members that work behind the scenes to make all of our events possible: Dana Morabito (Recording Secretary), Cari Olsen (Treasurer), Nicole Carr (Financial Secretary), Lindsay Klemaske (Special Events), Jenn Madigan (Corresponding Secretary), Kathy Farenc (Historian), Darlene Larson (Parliamentarian), Holly Sepa (Auditor) and Mike Madigan (Webmaster). And finally, thank you to the long list of the parent volunteers, teachers and staff that help set-up, clean up, staff check-in tables and cash boxes, mark running club laps and emcee and DJ our events. We literally could not do it without you! Editor’s note: The board members of the PTA would like to thank our fearless leader, Joan Schwenker, for her tireless efforts, leadership, attention to detail, and commitment to Deer Canyon! Parents, save the date and come help with the Children’s Holiday Shop on Friday, December 5th. The Children’s Holiday Shop offers “kid priced” gift items for moms, dads, grandparents, siblings and friends from 7:45 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. that Friday. Students may bring money from home to shop before school, during recess or after school. (Students will not visit the shop during class time.) Adult “elves” are needed to help the younger students with their gift selections and to help ring up their purchases. PTA does not make a profit from the shop. It’s just a special way to brighten the holiday season for our children and allow them to experience the joy of giving. This is a fun and heart-warming event, and you’ll enjoy it as much as the kids do! If you can help, please contact us at [email protected] . Thank you! The cost is just $19.00 per book if ordered by January 16, 2015. Yearbooks ordered between January 17, 2015 and April 10, 2015 will cost $21.00.
