Please Note:
There will be one Mass on
Thanksgiving Day at 9:00 a.m.
The liturgical year concludes with a solemn acknowledgment of
the Universal Kingship of Jesus Christ. After a year’s reflection
on the Paschal Mystery—the story of His life, ministry and
teaching, His suffering, death and resurrection—we return to
the present moment, where we stand on the edge of the future.
We acclaim the Lord of all life and of all time, as we consider
what lies ahead, for ourselves and for the whole created order.
In faith, we look toward the consummation of all reality in a
Judgment that will manifest the power and glory of the One
God, revealed by Jesus as our Eternal and Loving Father, Who
designates Him as Lord and King. The images from Scripture
repeatedly liken God’s concern for the care of His children to
the protectiveness of a shepherd for the flock entrusted to him.
The Prophet Ezekiel gives voice to God’s determination to tend
His flock with gentle but firm guidance beyond that of even the
most diligent of human shepherds. God’s love is individualized,
knowing our vulnerability and seeking to help us come to a
safe and secure destination in His eternal embrace. Since He
has created us to be free, He guides and appeals, but does not
force our response: we must choose to follow His lead, in hope
of one day grazing “beside restful waters” in the “verdant
pastures” envisioned by Psalm 23. But these soothing wordpictures play against other images of the ‘end time’: the Final
Judgment Jesus’ parable describes focuses on accountability
for our actions and omissions. Here, the ‘flocks’ of sheep and
goats are separated not by a random decision of the Divine
Judge, but by their records of response to those in need. Jesus
outlines clearly the path one must follow to merit admission to
the heavenly pastures.
A most interesting feature of this parable is the surprise on the
part of both ‘sheep’ and ‘goats’ to their respective fates: those
in the first group seem to have acted on an instinct to be and to
do what one can for those in need, while those in the second
group may have been scrupulous in performing ‘good deeds’
but missed seeing a connection between God and His suffering
children. As we contemplate the future, and especially how our
earthly lives may end, we need to hear the lesson of the
parable while we can still change direction. This is not to
pander to our fears, but to appeal to our deepest self-interest.
Alive as the Body of Christ, claiming Him as our King reminds
us of how we can best show our allegiance.
We congratulate our 9th-Graders who this weekend are
receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation. Please join me in
praying that they will respond to the Gift of the Holy Spirit in
their young lives as they move forward with us on our journey
as disciples of Jesus Christ. God love you!
- Msgr. Tim Shugrue
Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe
STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK….
“...as you did it to one of the least of my
brethren, you did it to me.” (Matthew 25:40)
Most of us are generous when it’s convenient for
us. But, generosity is the opposite of that. It
means giving of one’s time, money, compassion,
forgiveness, mercy when it’s not convenient; when it’s not on
our schedule, but on the other person’s schedule.
FLU SEASON
While local pharmacies are offering flu shots in advance of the
coming winter, and with the much-publicized concern about the
spread of serious viruses, some parishioners have expressed
anxiety about risks associated with hand-shaking, as in the
opening introductions at Mass or at the Sign of Peace. In an
effort to reduce this anxiety, we will place hand sanitizer on the
tables flanking the doors at the church entries, for use as an
extra precaution. And it is important to repeat that anyone who
feels ill or “not quite right” or is coughing or sneezing, should
refrain from partaking of the Precious Blood at Communion.
Please do not interpret a fellow worshipper’s reluctance to
shake hands as a personal affront: it may simply be a matter of
a person’s feeling vulnerable. A friendly nod or smile can
convey the proper attitude of mutual respect and affection.
MEMORIAL DONATIONS
We are accepting Memorial Donations for flowers
for the Altar area, the Candles, Bread & Wine
used for the Liturgies, and the weekly Sanctuary
Candle. These items may be donated in memory
of someone or to mark a special occasion. A
donation of $10 is suggested for the candles, bread & wine and
sanctuary candle, and a donation of $40 is suggested for the
weekly flowers. (MEMORIAL CARDS ARE AVAILABLE FOR
THESE DONATIONS.) ALSO, as we face the need to replace
various items for liturgical use, we are happy to arrange for
memorials of deceased loved ones. Contact the Parish Office.

OFFICIAL NOTICE OF
ACCREDITATION
We are pleased to announce that Saint
Michael School has once again received accreditation from the Middle
States Association of Colleges and Schools. It is no small feat that
our School has consistently received accreditation for accomplishments over the years, along with schools throughout the world
that meet the internationally recognized standards of quality of the
MSA. We congratulate our principal, Mrs. Miragliotta, the Middle
Schools Prep. Committee, our teaching staff, and our support staff for
their important part in this achievement.
“THANKSGIVING” -- A DISTINCTIVE MEANING -- Catholic
Charities is deeply thankful for your positive response to the donation
bin. As we all know, one way to give “thanks” is by “giving.” Just as
the Lord has given so many blessings, this is an ideal time to give
away any unwanted clothing or small household items to the Catholic
Charities donation bin: call 973-.596-3985 or email
[email protected]. Catholic Charities will report in January on
the amount of money generated from the bin.
