Please Note: All Saints Day is NOT a Holy Day of Obligation
this year. The 5:30 p.m. Mass on Saturday evening, November 1,
will be the Mass for All Souls Day, with the annual remembrance
of the past year’s deceased parishioners. Masses on Sunday,
November 2, will be for All Souls Day.
We are familiar with the Ten Commandments given to Moses
on Mount Sinai after the Israelites’ departure from Egypt, but
these rather pithy statements are more like chapter headings,
acting as a summary of a more detailed code of conduct God
wishes His People to live by. Today’s excerpt from the Book of
Exodus relates some of these expectations, regarding proper
treatment of ‘aliens’, widows, orphans, the poor - indeed, of all
who are disadvantaged. They reveal God’s disposition or
‘mindset’, voiced in the phrase, “I am compassionate.” Thus
God fixes the point from which His People are to consider their
attitudes and behaviors toward others. Compassion - the very
word means ‘suffering or enduring with’ - is understood to be
the instinct God intends to govern human relations. This is the
background for Jesus’ opinion pairing the “greatest and the first
commandment” - love of God with all one’s heart, soul and
mind - with “the second...You shall love your neighbor as
yourself.” He goes on, “The whole law and the prophets
depend on these two commandments.” The scope of our
obligations to God is determined, therefore, not by setting a
minimum level of compliance, but by recognizing as our target
a maximum degree of obedience to the two ‘supreme’
commands that Jesus defines. A sincere disciple of Jesus
cannot fail to be committed to these interconnected ideals, by
which one seeks to reverence God not only in the worship
expressed in sacred rituals, but in the compassion that
embraces all His children in their deepest needs. The works of
justice and charity are to be interwoven with our prayer life in a
consistent and seamless expression of our devotion to God,
both as individuals and as a community of faith. I see this
understanding in the efforts of so many parishioners to respond
to the human needs of people around us: they challenge me,
and all of us, to more conscious attention to the demands of
charity. In responding to the many calls for compassion, we
can serve, in St. Paul’s words describing his followers at
Thessalonika, “as a model for all the believers”, as well as for
the wider community challenged to treat justly those who are at
risk in our society. They include the unborn and the frail elderly
but also, as in the time of Moses, vulnerable immigrants, the
poor and all with inadequate sources of basic support and
protection. God’s words are clear: “If ever you wrong them and
they cry out to me, I will surely hear their cry.” Our conviction is
that God wishes us also - Alive as the Body of Christ - to hear
their cry and respond with compassion.
I look forward to reviewing official reports of the discussions at
the first session of the special Synod on the Family, concluded
last Sunday in Rome. Media accounts predictably focused on
‘hot button’ issues and unhelpful rumors. We need to recall that
the Synod process is complex; much needs to be digested and
refined before recommendations are finalized. Let us keep that
process in our prayers as it continues. God love you!

ANNUAL MASS OF REMEMBRANCE
Do you put other “gods” before God? Is your love
of money, power, status or some personal
possession greater than your love for God? If so, you may
want to pay attention to the scripture reading because you are
not going to like the outcome. The good news -- it’s not too late
to put God first in your life.

On Saturday, November 1, 2014, at our parish Mass at
5:30 p.m. we will remember those relatives and friends who
have died during this past year. Their names will be read during
the Liturgy for the Commemoration of All Souls. (It will be the
Sunday Liturgy). Friends and relatives of those who have died
will be invited to this special liturgy and ALL members of the
parish are encouraged to attend.
AS FLU SEASON APPROACHES...
While local pharmacies are offering flu shots in advance of the
coming winter, and with the much-publicized concern about the
spread of serious viruses, some parishioners have expressed
anxiety about risks associated with hand-shaking, as in the
opening introductions at Mass or at the Sign of Peace. In an
effort to reduce this anxiety, we will place hand sanitizer on the
tables flanking the doors at the church entries, for use as an
extra precaution. And it is important to repeat that anyone who
feels ill or “not quite right” or is coughing or sneezing, should
refrain from partaking of the Precious Blood at Communion.
Please do not interpret a fellow worshipper’s reluctance to
shake hands as a personal affront: it may simply be a matter of
a person’s feeling vulnerable. A friendly nod or smile can
convey the proper attitude of mutual respect and affection.

A Book of Remembrance will be placed in the lobby in which
you can record your loved ones’ names.

SENIOR SISTERS CHRISTMAS BAZAAR ….sponsored by the
Religious Teachers Filippini, will take place on Sunday, November 2,
(12 Noon - 5 p.m.) at Villa Walsh, Mother Ninetta Hall, 455 Western
Ave., Morristown, NJ. The event will benefit retired sisters and those
housed in the infirmary. It will include unique gifts, crafts, plus a
50/50. A food court will include pizza frittas , pizzelles, traditional
pangiallo, as well as homemade Italian sandwiches and desserts such
as home baked cakes, pies, cookies, and more.
PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL INAUGURATED
A re-constituted Pastoral Council of St. Michael Parish has begun
meeting monthly and is in the process of organizing its schedule,
officers, etc. A Pastoral Council is intended to serve a Parish by
regular dialogue with the Pastor on matters affecting the overall
mission of the Parish. Following nominations by St. Michael’s
parishioners of individuals to be considered for membership, a series
of meetings was conducted to familiarize prospective members with
the general expectations of Council membership. In September,
fifteen parishioners were named by Msgr. Shugrue to serve on the
Pastoral Council. Terms of service for the initial Council will be for 1, 2
or 3 years, to provide for a regular rotation of members: in the future,
terms will be for 3 years. Named to 1-year terms are Rosanne
Barone, Carmine DeNicola, Katie Hickey, Joan Van Bergen and Steve
Waldner; named to 2-year terms are Barbara Krause, Robert Kricks,
Mary Kate Santulli, Bob Scheurer, James Winter and Paul Zissler;
named to 3-year terms are Don Barone, Jim Donnelly, Ken Hickey
and Marge Szymona. In addition, Parish Trustees Barbara Bilger and
Richard Gallagher will assist the Council in an ex officio advisory
capacity. In September the new Council met with members of the
Steering Committee for Parish Transformation that has been serving
as an ad hoc advisory body, suggesting and overseeing various
initiatives over the past two years. Among things to be determined is a
method for submission by parishioners of items they wish the Pastoral
Council to address. We thank all who submitted their names for
consideration or were nominated by others, and we ask all our
parishioners to support the Council’s work in their prayers.

REPORTING OF ABUSE …. The Archdiocese takes very seriously
any and all allegations of sexual misconduct by members of the
clergy, religious and lay staff of the Archdiocese. We encourage
anyone with knowledge of an act of sexual misconduct to inform us
immediately so that we may take appropriate action to protect others
and provide support to victims of sexual abuse. Individuals who wish
